    Today we are going to review Holbein Artists Colored Pencils. Until recently they have been very difficult to find in America and very expensive if you did manage to score a set on Ebay. Now that Blick is stocking them we have a reliable source of both sets and open stock Holbein pencils.
    Holbein Pencils on Blick shrsl.com/2yu10 (affiliate link)
    Pros:
    Highly pigmented
    Fast laydown of color
    Ability to layer several layers and mix colors
    Good for folks with arthritis as little pressure is needed
    Great color selection (range of 150 colors)
    Really unique range of robust pastel tones
    Lightfast ratings are provided on the pencils with 3 stars being highest.
    Cons:
    Price ($3.19 per pencil)
    Availability (only Blick has them in USA and they can be hard to buy outside of Japan)
    Tips wear down quickly
    Bottom line:
    The most unique feature about this line is the pastel tones. I plan to add a few more of those to my collection where I do not have similar shades in Prismacolor, Coloursoft, or Lightfast. I urge you to try a few open stock pencils before committing to a full set if you are not sure as there is not a huge per pencil savings in the sets and they mix and layer well so I don't think the full set is necessary to create beautiful art. I recommend these pencils but I do hope the price comes down as they become more popular and available.
    One more thing, I referenced Arteza colored pencils as a very similar pencil. They have changed the numbering on the pencils so I am not sure if the pencils are still the same quality but they did start offering open stock pencils with the same names of the ones I have but different numbers for anyone who wants to try a couple and see. I have inquired about these new numbered pencils and I will update it here if I find out more.

    Hi Lindsay I appreciate the review. I love my Holbein. I got them from Amazon Japan for only 250 including shipping and duty so that is where I encourage people to get them. I refuse to get them elsewhere at the moment because they are just too expensive. I have learned the hard way not to see professional pencils as "good" or "bad", but rather like tools. There was an artist who did a review this week on them that was not very favorable but she said they perform more like oil pastels rather than colored pencils. I have used oil pastels for years so that might be why I enjoy these pencils so much.

    Thank you so much for reviewing these! I really trust your reviews and appreciate your honesty when comparing them to other pencils. I have the older (not water-soluble) Arteza set too, and it is super helpful to know they feel very similar. I think I'm going to do as you suggested and invest in the pastel set, but unless they blow me away I will probably just use the pastel set and open stock to complement my other sets instead of investing $$$ in the full set of Holbeins.

    Lindsay, that was indeed a very fair, respectful, thorough, and unbiased review of these colour-pencils. It was a big surprice to me to learn how similar Holbein's pencils are to Arteza's. You are, though, not the first reviewer of Holbein's products to conclude they may not live up to their reputation and thus worthwhile the high costs. Thanks a lot, Lindsay. You saved us a lot of money. Instead, I might get the new Arteza 120 set. I have their previous 76 set, and I am quite fond of those. Many greetings from Denmark.👍🙏❤🌞🙂

    Thank you...and when I say thank you, I mean thank you. No disrespect to all the people on UA-cam who say these pencils are the 'holy grail'...I was not buying it. I am in the UK and Jackson's are still selling these open stock and in various sets. I enquired a few months ago if they could obtain the 150 set. They said they could but when they said how much...as deep as I was in my depression and trying to find a comfort from colouring...I thought, at that price, they better be able to get out of the box, put the kettle on and make me a cup of tea...
    Lindsay I love what you do...so much. I do not want to hijack this. What I do want to say, if this was down to me, this should be the first video anyone discovering colouring as a hobby/stress relief/ any other reason why you reach out and find this...compulsory viewing.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  3 роки тому +2

      That is very kind if you to say:) I agree, for the price of the set they should do the drawing for you and make tea 😆. They are lovely, don't get me wrong, but for me a bit excessively priced. It's off as their watercolors are among the most reasonable. I think a lot if the cost comes down to them being highly desired and hard to get. I can't see them on the Jackson's site so I think they are restricting sales to the 🇺🇸

    I just received the Astra Pastelowe pastel colored pencils (my current skill level can’t justify the cost of Holbein pencils)
    I have to admit I’m glad I did not obsess over the Holbein and saved hundreds of dollars!
    I’ve seen comparison videos of the Astra vs Holbein, and Astra definitely duped the Holbein colors.
    I also LOVE my Prismacolor over any other colored pencils.

    Thank you for the wonderful review! I've been curious about these for a little while but because of their availability, I've never tried getting some. I did a quick look on ebay, and it does seem there are sellers from japan selling sets of these for more reasonable amounts (one listing was $129+ free economy shipping for a 50 set of just the pastel tones). If I do end up getting these, I'll do what you recommended and go for the pastel set most likely; there doesn't seem to be a need for me to go for the full range when I've already got others. Again, thank you for such a great review!

    A set of 50 Holbein's, ordinary or pastels, will set you back $210 here in Oz. The 150 set is $630. I'd be willing to pay $210 for either set of 50 but the 150's are too much of a stretch. You can also get a set of 100 here as well, but they can be hard to come by. The sets of 12, 24 and 36 are quite readily available. The pastel set, though, looks gorgeous! I'd be tempted just to pour epoxy over them and hang them on a wall!!!😝

I got the 50 pastel set for my birthday; they are lovely pencils. It is as you say, an excellent add on set. I have just bought the whole 150 set second hand. They are like the Arteza but even more like the Brutfuner squares. I think Brutfuner have copied them as they did with their Macaron sets. To me they seem like Brutfuner on steroids. They need a spongier paper to really shine. Be aware that the Holbeins you get in the USA are not the same as the Japanese ones and from what I have seen not as good. The japanese are so pigmented.

    The price on the Lightfast went up again. I just purchased about 15 Holbein because the white and light beige/ sand are great blenders and the white is just as opaque if not more than the Prismacolor. Quite a few of the pastel set are not lightfast if that matters to some. Of course too anything neon doesn’t have a chance either. But I love the Jaune brilliant, and many of the earth tones. Pinks are sketchy anyways even if they are Faber Castell. That’s why the Lightfast ones don’t have a huge array of them. But they really blend nice and the waterbrush idea using the Caran ‘de ache medium fibrous pointy marker tipped one works great without leaking if one puts their thinner in there or Zest it, I just use 125 neutral thin because no smell and I can cap it and throw it in my bag. I can sit anywhere and blend away and it doesn’t let you use too much either because of the dispenser button. Thanks again for another great video, Please try the blender idea, it doesn’t make a mess.

    • @jenniefrench1338
      @jenniefrench1338 3 роки тому

      @@thefrugalcrafter yes it’s the one in the middle on the Blicks page. It has a nice long pointed marker nib. I just press the side button and wipe it clean, cap it and put it in the bag. The side of the nib can cover a large area too. I have noticed how much I overused it (oms) in the past and it didn’t look so good. I pretreat my hp paper with Liquitex since the pencils don’t soak in anyway and that added vibrancy. And I have even carefully used the Art Spectrum pastel primer in clear to go over a watercolor with using a cheap sponge brush then when dry I detail it. The pigment stayed and now it is exciting to do some plein aire with colored pencils this year. I have some of the Holbein hanging in my window. I only purchased less than 20 due to the lightfast issue. I will let you know in 3 months. But I didn’t buy pink. The white was very useful though and that light beige or sand. I will keep you posted. Take care

    QUESTION? The Cutest poncho Lindsay, love those colors!!!! Did you Crochet it? Sorry second thing I noticed after your smile :-) Oh, I got my little finger blender brushes today, nice packaging and they are sooo soft!!!! Cezanne is my guess before you tell us what brand you think it is similar to. I was wrong, darn. I thought Chromos were pricey! Jackson Art still offers Holbein Pencil open stock and in sets. Sadly the UK is no longer in the EU so having import taxes from Japan to the UK and from the UK into the EU makes this a little annoyingly expensive but Peters Art in Germany also offers the Holbein brands including sets and open stock pencils.

I was gifted a friends duplicate holbeins along with the 50 pastel set and i liked them so much i ordered the 100 set from Amazon japan for 100 dollars (really good deal). Unfortunately they have about 30 duplicates from the pastel set but i can always use more pastels. Their soft white is so opaque and creamy........Can you please give me the pattern for that pastel shawl you are wearing? Hey Lindsay question about colored pencils so I got some luminance color pencils for Mother’s Day and was working on a mixed media piece with them and watercolor and when I applied the watercolor on top I felt like the color had moved along with the watercolor so I scribbled out some color on a scrap piece of paper and used a wet brush and sure enough it’s dissolved actually better then the cheap watercolor pencils I have 😳 but is this normal? Are they suppose to do this?

    Last thing I heard the Holbien pastel coloured pencils were not yet available in open stock, if they ever will be; whole set or nothing. Tough luck if you love and use one up I guess. Sadly they are simply to hard and too expensive to get. I'd much rather save up and get the largest set of Derwent Lightfast. Cool they exist but until and unless the price becomes more reasonable they will continue to loose out on potentially millions of sales due to accessibility; ease of purchase, shipping cost as well as speed of shipping, and product cost. Why pay double for a less guaranteed lightfastness and not increased quality? Certainly having to buy the whole set and NO open stock is the nail in the coffin. At this point they just taunt us, its as if they are merely imaginary and might as well not exist to the majority of earth...

I bet you no one will complain if a darker shade was called flesh🙄 Watch someone loose their shit because a company called a bright green apple when apples can also be red or yellow😹 It’s just a name whiny little freaks who raise hell over a name of a pencil
