Amazing video! BoC never wants to do the same things twice so maybe not an ARG, but im sure the way a new album would be announced would be in a very unique way
Nah, they're a spent force imo. Too old now, lack of creativity, lack of interest in making new music, ran out of ideas years ago and at least have the decency not to release any old shite, so fair play to them. It's a shame cos I really liked MHTRTC and Geogaddi, but I think their creativity stopped there. TCH was almost like listening to an Enigma album and TH sounded like a desperate parody of an artist who can't recapture their former glories. Mind, I'd love to be wrong and see them come back work something new and astonishing that didn't sound like anything they'd did before. Two albums in 23 years tells it's own story though, they're mid 50s now? Not gonna happen is it.
I actually love that this video was mostly focused on the hunt for the album and not solely focused on the actual album and music itself. I discovered BoC a few months after this album came out so i was pissed i didn't get to experience the lead up
Excellent work. I remember the online hype about this album (Being a fan from Boc Maxima). Oddly enough, the last mix I uploaded on my channel features some BoC tracks in it 👍
Great video! The album rollout itself is far more interesting than other bands' discographies. Happy 2025 and wish you more success and audience for this year. Congrats!
Love BoC, always. Was not at all aware of this marketing for that album. Reminds me of the Cicada mystery that sent people sleuthing across the web years ago. Great video. Thanks🤘🏻
As someone who considers this band to be my favorite in the world, it's a true privilege and joy to watch such a beautifully made video. I imagine you had to do a lot of research to create this. Thank you very much for this. Your channel rocks.
Oh hey, my video was included! I didn't actually take the video outside of Rough Trade, it was captured by a user of the IRC channel us BoC nerds were using to try and crack the code. He was nearby as we were discussing the rough trade development so he agreed to take a train down and capture some video.
I always thought the concept for the rollout was appropriated from the plot of William Gibson's 'Pattern Recognition', where a cult forms around a series of anonymous, artistic film clips distributed ransomly via the internet.
I've waited for these video and i'm having shivers after watching it, thank you very much! It also made me appreciate more "Tomorrow's Harvest" album after years of not listening to it because of its very, if not overwhelming bleak atmosphere for me. Now i see how BoC predicted uncertain, sick times by the sound of this album... By the way, as a companion video about "TH" i recommend also a one from TennisThom YT channel! Greetings from Poland!
A very similar experience for me. Bleak is exactly the word I've used most frequently in describing it. Unlike literally every other BoC release, I find TH extremely difficult to listen to as an album - I get to feeling pressed down, dried out and stretched thin. Yet strangely, whenever I've thrown all the albums together into a giant randomized playlist, thus shattering their usual context, these tracks on their own stand just as strongly & beautifully as the rest. There is something to be said for art with this level of psychological potency. Probably many things.
The album covers have hidden info. Ever wonder why they have a washed look to them? Same with *Random Tunes* on youtube. They have said in interviews that they put encrypted messages in their music and art to kinda weed out their fans. Just like ciccada and other internet mysteries. I have a good feeling they already released an album 🔴 Nice video tho i can finally show why BoC is soo fun to be a fan of. Thanx
Also I'm sure BoC know that us fans would love a new album, they aren't dead or too old, unless they have to work 7 days flipping burgers to survive i'm sure they have the time to write more, so why wouldn't they ? I highly doubt that writing what they have already is enough and that will do forever, when you are as gifted with sound exploration as these two are, then why wouldn't they keep writing and making albums. Screw the net, there are oldies out here that would love to se a new release and slap it on a turntable and listen to for days. My daughter is 17 and has never seen a vinyl record or turntable , i'd love her first experience to be a new boC record.
I still have a very warm feeling about this period. Coming home for days after work and immediately checking to see if anything more was known on the twoism forum. It was extra special for me because I experienced the campaign up close. I got to change the banner myself and wait and see how quickly it would be picked up. Of course, I myself only knew the visual change and not the substantive change in the code. What could be added is that the genius brothers managed it in such a way that you only heard noise in the 2 separate audio files but only when you laid them on top of each other you heard the song. I was unaware that creating that nostalgic experience was BoC's intention at the time. We had already asked as twoism-crew to prove our connection to BoC. (To debunk misinformation on the twoism forum) So we hinted at something in the form of the announcement of a track name before the album was out or whatever. But we could never have imagined being involved in this album roll out in this way!
If you’re interested in looking at another enigmatic artist well known for their ARG work, check out Deathpact. They’ve had a very interesting history with this kind of thing since 2017.
What an amazing, I had no idea! I got this album in . Amazon, around 2014. Being almost 58, I so get the idea of nothing being a mystery anymore. I would not give up the modern technology/ social media etc. for enything, but there is such a different ora / feeling to everything now, its a like another dimention for some of us at a certain age. Some of us with our memories of finding music 40 years ago apposed to now, are interdimentional travilers ...
I really miss all the elaborate album rollouts warp used to do, aphex, boards, oneohtrix were all campaigns i remember fondly. I think they add so much to the art itself especially when the artist has their hand in it too, the music economy of today probably has little room to work with elaborate campaigns like this now unfortunately
I just watched the Other Music documentary the other day... seems that place was like heaven for music fans. In the doc, one of the employees writes down their all time best-sellers on a whiteboard. If I remember correctly, I think it was Belle & Sebastian at #1, Moon Safari by Air #2, and Music has the right to children #3. Highly recommend the doc!
the campaign was fun and memorable, still remember it like it was yesterday. but it insignificant to the album itself and how it predicted the future. which is not fun at all.
Overall, cool mini documentary on this piece of history. Though you did miss that Cold Earth was also played at a Detroit music festival on the 26th of May 2013 as part of the campaign. ua-cam.com/video/dQliUhLJw0A/v-deo.html
I have a feeling in my psychic acid bone that there will be a new Boards Of Canada album in 2025. We need a proper soundtrack for the end of the world.
I'd rather they never release new music again than incorporate AI into anything they do. Given how environmentally aware they are I'd hope they would steer clear of it. That said, great video! I had no idea about this insane rollout.
This was a mistake in the video. It's a common misconception that 6 of those records were made. This is because the guy who found the first record speculated that there must be 5 more records, each with a different 6-digit number read out, and the XXXXXX in a different position on the cover to correspond to those numbers. However, as it soon transpired, the other numbers weren't found on records but in UA-cam videos, website source code etc. Furthermore, the other copies of the record that *were* found contained the same 6-digit number, with the XXXXXX in the same position on the cover. So for all we know, all copies of the record were found quite quickly. I don't think it's ever been confirmed how many copies are actually in circulation, but it's probably not as many as 6. You'd assume that after 10+ years, all copies would have been found
Nah, believe it or not there was a time when you'd buy an album without having heard anything on it previously. Seeing a classic like Cradle of History by Global Goon and thinking 'what the fuck is this?' for example, beautiful melodies, nondescript female face on the cover, no info, that was mysterious. This was just a gimmick.
Looking back on it, it’s interesting to note that this occurred during the beginnings of what could be called “peak vaporwave”. The scene (including any adjacent ones) definitely owes a lot to Boards of Canada in making nostalgia be the driving component in the art. To get a bit personal, a month or so prior to it, I was actually going through the process of obtaining a synchronised licence to use the BoC track “Opening the Light” as closing credit music to the one film I ever made to my name (so far). The campaign would begin a week after I premiered the film at the Boston International Film Festival (and that happened to concur with the Boston Marathon bombing … and that’s a whole other story =[ ).
Do you think we’ll see another Boards of Canada ARG in the future?
Amazing video! BoC never wants to do the same things twice so maybe not an ARG, but im sure the way a new album would be announced would be in a very unique way
if a new album will ever happen
@ Thank you! Yes, I think you're absolutely right.
See the reuploaded Dayvan Cowboy video

I was there, what a trip.
I remember when we got the full code and typed it in. I still have goose bumps thinking about it!
I actually love that this video was mostly focused on the hunt for the album and not solely focused on the actual album and music itself. I discovered BoC a few months after this album came out so i was pissed i didn't get to experience the lead up
monstrously underrated channel
we are elated to find this channel, exceptional work and Album Affairs has our support Thank You/Merci

Wonderful video. Boards of Canada endure even to this day, they are timeless, they are enigmatic, and they continue to inspire us in many ways.
As someone who considers this band to be my favorite in the world, it's a true privilege and joy to watch such a beautifully made video. I imagine you had to do a lot of research to create this. Thank you very much for this.

You'll be at 100k subs in no time making videos this good 😊👍
Thank you, that's kind. One can dream 😂

Thank you to the both of you! 🙏 It's a piece of history 🙂
💯
Thank you for this i hope the release another one soon
I love BoC and this showed on my feed, nice video 👏
I'm amazed that anyone had time for this! Bravo to those that did and followed thru!

Beautiful video !! Thanks a lot !!
This was so much fun. I remember browsing the hidden web sites trying to find clues.
Your editing skills getting better and better, man.
Thank you mate!
So they made their own version of Cicada 3301 as an add for their new album...
BOC is goat’d for this. I went to Mount Dolores on a pilgrimage after all this happened just to see the site. Boards… come back we need you
Well researched put together video. Subbed!
Thank you!
You forgot to mention they had an ad on adult swim if I remember correctly during album release.
during Bleach…. at least that was when I saw it
That was brilliant it stimulated my mind just beautifully, I could watch stuff like this for hrs..
Great! 😎
Amazing content!!
Thank you!
Really fucking with that creepy Number Station craze that went wild in the 2010's
Great video! 😊
I also *think* I remember some sort of snippet played on [adult swim] for Tomorrow’s Harvest. Didn’t see that mentioned?
i just binged all ur vids you make awesome stuff
Thank you! 🙏
top notch content here 😍
Thank you mate!

I remember that day when a guy at Other Music recommended this album that just came out. Music has the right to children I miss that place

reminded me of the marketing for the movie A.I.

Album is still really great hoping we finally get some new music soon. New BoC album before Winds of Winter?:)
how on earth did this video get only 2.8K views?????? I thought it was some famous youtuber. you’ve got some skill dude! your going to get so far
Many thanks! 🙏
Tomorrows Harvest was one of the last CDs I bought on release
is that Bo Beats?
Of course Other Music was involved. I used to work around the corner at a restaurant called Bayamó. I bought MHTRTC there when it came out.
I am honored to be the very F1RST!!1 comment on a Boards of Canada Video (my favorite band) on Album Affairs.
🙌
It's marketing. There. You're now up to speed.
I have a feeling in my psychic acid bone that there will be a new Boards Of Canada album in 2025. We need a proper soundtrack for the end of the world.
loved it

That said, great video! I had no idea about this insane rollout.
I agree, I think they could incorporate messages about AI and what it's doing to humanity. I think that would be rather interesting.
crazy that not all Records were found
This was a mistake in the video. It's a common misconception that 6 of those records were made. C'mon back BOC, now's the time.
Finland! Finland! Is a nice......
BOC should have said nothing.
The boys will never surpass Tomorrows Harvest.
Bullshit videos has the right fail....
BoC is the most boring band
It’s a shame they didn’t put more effort into the music. 😐
I’m not even slightly intriged by this silly sudoku stuff
The level of Gimmicky is inversely proportional to the quality of the musical work. Sorry.
MHTRTC was a good album, the rest, meh. Christ was better.
RIP Benbecula Records
Crazy that you'd consider Geogaddi to be 'meh'
@@rorz999 Yeah its no MHTRTC, its a one off, hard to follow up.
I do hope we get a new BOC album soon
