The Most Mysterious Album Rollout of All Time
On April 20, 2013, a mysterious Boards of Canada vinyl was found in a NYC record store, containing the first of six cryptic transmissions that formed part of a 36-digit code.
This discovery turned out to be the launch of an alternate reality game (ARG) meticulously designed to promote Boards of Canada’s new album, Tomorrow’s Harvest.
The game included, among many other things, a global scavenger hunt for hidden albums, further transmissions across multimedia (BBC Radio 1, NPR, UA-cam, Adult Swim), online codebreaking, and a listening party at an abandoned waterpark in the Mojave Desert.
The Guardian praised the album’s viral marketing campaign as "ingenious" and a testament to the fanbase's dedication.
In this video, we’ll dive deep into the most mysterious album rollout of all time:

During his relatively short solo career, Elliott Smith cemented himself as one of the most talented singer-songwriters of his generation. Elliott Smith's self-titled sophomore album h...

In 1997, Canadian post-rock band Godspeed You! Black Emperor exploded onto the indie scene with their seminal debut "F# A# ∞" (F Sharp A Sharp Infinity), cementing them as one of the most unique rock bands to come out in the late nineties. Often deemed apocalyptic in its tone, "F# A# ∞" is arguably one of the most foreboding albums ever, telling the story of a bleak, corrupt and wasted society ...

In the early 90s, Aphex Twin was on top of the world. After having released his highly acclaimed debut album, "Selected Ambient Works 85-92", he became a poster child for techno and toured with the likes of The Orb, Orbital and Moby. But when the time came to release his sophomore album, Richard D. James (Aphex Twin) took a very different approach. Instead of leaning back on the techno that had...
The True Meaning of Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space

It wouldn’t be out of place to put ”Ladies and Gentlemen We’re Floating in Space” in the top tier of 90s music. Spiritualized’s magnum opus has frequently been regarded as one of the best albums of the decade and was even named album of the year by NME, beating out giants such as Radiohead and The Verve. Sure, we can all agree that it’s an amazing album but many often disagree about what the al...

After making some of the best alternative rock of the 90s and early 2000s, Mark Kozelek reinvented himself with his 2014 masterpiece ”Benji”. Hailed as one of the best albums of the year, “Benji” showcased a surprisingly stripped-down sound, with the main focus being on Kozelek’s lyrics rather than the music. Traditional song structures were out the window and we were left with verse after vers...

Boards of Canada burst onto the electronic music scene like a shockwave with their 1998 debut album ”Music Has the Right to Children”. The War on Drugs' 2014 album "Lost in the Dream" was celebrated as one of the best albums of the year thanks to its unique blend of classic rock, indie, shoegaze, and americana. Give it another shot maybe? When first released, I always thought there were some bangers on it (reach for the dead, come to dust, jacquard causeway, white cyclosa, nothing is real etc) but I've come to appreciate the album as a whole a lot more with age. Though I'm slightly biased maybe because I also love the type of dystopian 70s sci-fi movies that were a main inspiration for the album. Thanks for watching!

I've known a fair amount of Godspeed fans over the years, and they all appreciate the band as a whole. That said, those that prefer F# A# and Slow Riot are generally darker, more pessimistic folk who also listen to Crust Punk and Doom Metal, Anarchists and horror movie fans. Those who favor Skinny Fists and later tend to be more nerdy, artsy people who listen to a lot of Post-Rock and appreciate the music more than the vibe. I'm definitely more towards the former...F# A# is one of the most powerful albums ever IMO, in any genre. All of Godspeed's stuff is exceptional but that album is just special.

There's no one else like BoC, and there never will be ... Every single release is a masterpiece, one way or another, and will we get another ...?, indeed ... The main thing, to me anyways, that they excel at, and which is what makes their music so memorable, is in their mastery of melody and counter melodies. Current, similar music, or anything in the nostalgia space, don't even come close. I'm sure their relative isolation plays a part in this, in addition to their raw talent, or channeling, if you like.

I saw them about 2-3 weeks after 9/11 in Toronto, and during the gig, they played film visuals throughout their set. The most penetrating was of a group of people standing around watching a controlled demolition of an old Apartment or Business Building. It was so bloody prescient, as the mood even before the film was heavy due to the violence that the whole world just watched. But the weird thing was after the building falls, everyone ( in the footage shown), just turn around and walk away like they were now indoctrinated by some mysterious overlords. Kind've like us Patrons at said gig, listening to the soundtrack of an apocalypse, all dazed and only shaking it off when the House lights came on and the Stormtroopers came in and mopped up our Beer cups, Joint Roaches, etc. Where they found this visual piece, and then decided to use it basically mere days after 9/11 was brilliant and of course shocking, and shook me to the core. Genius, without an ounce of pretension.

I live in Canada and we were forced to watch dozens of creations by The Film Board of Canada. From how Maple Syrup is harvested, to bizarre takes on the Natural world, even Sexual Education stuff; this was in the 80's, fucken didn't even know what a Computer was other than say Pitfall or Frogger on an Atari. They bored us to all hell, but when MHTRTC was released I ( at age 22) had an weird, intense, reactive nostalgia for the strangeness of education during the transition from child to teenager, the awkwardness of fashion, hairstyles, masturbation, and the almost forced indoctrination of boy + girl= Baby. You wonder how Gen X was so full of neurosis. As the looming push for us to become productive members of Adulthood and its responsibilities. Because of one record. This one here. BoC and Plastikman changed my whole consciousness, without a lyric in sight.

Is it divisive, though? I've not done any deep research, but a quick look at their wiki page suggests largely positive reviews. As far as I knew, it's held in high regard. I mean, it has their biggest 'hit' Dayvan Cowboy. If anything, I'd have said Tomorrow's Harvest was their most underrated, as that one takes a bit more time to sink in.

I think you miss something essential. There is a spooky nostalgia for things you have never directly experienced in BOC. But surely there is something deeply wrong in childhood too. Something has happened, and it is deeply unsettling, as if the nostalgia is for a time in a cult where children were actually not safe.

When this album came out and I had it in heavy rotation, I was living with a girl with whom it was pretty clear it would never work out in the long term, but it was a lot of fun while it was happening. We would drive all over the countryside of our state and neighboring ones, taking pictures and camping, then developing our work at the university darkroom. It was effin’ magic. This album brings it all back, so I can only listen to it occasionally.
