Me opening up youtube and seeing myself in the video… Awesome experience, words can’t express the gratitude I have for this man and his time. Forever grateful! Thanks again EJ
I met him that evening and he was still pumped about finally getting his roll. Said it only took 9 minutes working with EJ. It was was cool to meet EJ and talk about kayaks and movies. My wife met him later on, our friend Debbie was picking up her new boat and adjusting it. EJ is very nice and approachable.
The directive to choke in towards the midpoint of the shaft with the right hand is a good one. You can also grab the end of the blade with the left hand for additional leverage. Your failure rate obviously increases in combat scenarios, so practice in class 2 and keep working it. Private instruction is always worth the $$ when building fundamental skills.
The only way I can roll is with the pilates roll.. waiting on a longer paddle to arrive as I've found out my 200cm powerhouse is too short for me. Hoping a longer paddle will enable my hands to come back into the centre of paddle
I think you mean the "Pawlata" roll, but yeah. You can "trick" yourself by starting with the Pawlata position (the trailing hand on the edge of the blade), and after each success start inching that trailing hand up the blade and onto the shaft. Use goggles or open your eyes and watch the sweeping blade, making sure it stays near the surface. If you have hip flexibility, add a hip flip when the sweeping paddle nears its farthest position from the boat.

Kudos to sticking with it bro. 18 months is a very long time to keep trying, real dedication. Glad you got it down, definitely learned from the best.

John and I were in the same class at whitewater school last year! Way to go, man!!!
Took me 24 months to get my first roll. (Only practicing on lakes in the summer) so happy I stayed with it! Boating is my life now
Great Job Eric! So many people struggle the learn AND teach the roll. I wish I would've had the opportunity to learn to roll from you!
Taught by a kayak legend lucky man !!

That's awesome.
That is also the way I would have tested how deep it is, now if I can just get EJ to tech me how to cartwheel...😅
I remember this I was there that day
