I was stationed there from 1980 to 1983, with 659 Sqn, 9 Regt AAC. Revisited there a couple of years ago, my old block is now where the Lidl is, and most of the parade square is dug up. Great memories!
i lived here as a small boy in the mid 50's when my father was seconded to the army from the RAF to teach the army about airframe maintainance, I still remember our house 79a Siegfried strasse and our intial flat in Little London, I remember being ill with measles in both of them ! german measles the second time appropriate I suppose! and the sweet shop opposite our house on siegfried strasse with the old man who was the shop keeper who was always nice to us kids even when our british money jammed his sweet mchine...those airoplane lollipops are still fresh in my memory, I'm well into my 60's now, thanks for the burst of memories!
I served here 52 to 55 in C squadron 3rd RTR, best time of my life, just didn’t know it at the time. So sad to see the state it’s in,but what great memories of good mates.
I was there from 1978 to 1983, first with 71 Aircraft Workshops REME and then with 4 Reg AAC. I moved to the Netherlands in 1984 so I go back occasionally to see how the old place is faring. Detmold has changed a lot since the squaddies left, but some of the old haunts still survive like Louis cafe. I loved Detmold; miss it still.
I was there from 67 to 70. 20 Armoured Brigade Pro Unit. RMP. Spent more time in the 200 Signals Sqn and 3 RHA mess than my own. Better atmosphere!! Went back there in 93 then 98 just after it closed and then again five years ago. Each time on my motorbike. The last time I visited I met up with our unit interpreter, Harry Asef who was 94. Lovely man. He died soon after so it was so good to meet up with him again. Had kept in touch with him since I left there in 70. Just a shame the barracks has been vandalised so much. Good memories from back then.
I was over there in 2018 a lot of the barracks have been pulled down and private houses built on there. A lot of the MQ where being used to house immigrants or have been sold to the locals. But saying that Detmold is still a fantastic place, so many happy times spent in the town.
Sad to see it like that. I went to school there my dad was army air Corp Jeff Jeffery I loved going upto to watch tower to see over the airfield and drive around in the Landrovers would love to go back and see where I lived and the town. We left in 79 I think 655 squadron.
I was there 1973 to 1978 with 1st Reg RHA. Remember it well. Brillaint times. I lived in a Private hiring out of what was the back gate and turn right probably 20 mins drive in the countryside. Later moved into the Hak!! Happy days.
I was there with 1st RHA '75 to 78 and moved with the regiment to Topcliffe in the UK, returned to Detmold in' 81 to 86 with QOH and 4th/7th RDG. I really enjoyed my times there, especially Gunter, Halfway Bar and especially Potholes (anybody remember Susilo and Heidi ?)
@@simonellis4245 It wasPothoffs, I can blame my spellchecker!!!. I had some great times in there, Suzi ( not sure about the spelling) was really great.🤑
I was there 1972 till 1974, worked in the 9th 12th Lancers stables, used to ride the colenels polo pony and all polo ponies, also my sister worked for Major Barrington as nanny. good times, sorry to see such a clean well run place, going so down hill
I was stationed there in 87-89, at 4 Armd Wksp. Worst and last posting of my military service. After 4 Armd Wksp, I just couldn't take any more - I left to join the grown up world.
I was a child there while my dad, who was armourer in the REME, was serving with the Queens Own Hussars. It was one of his favourite ever postings. We lived in Niedersachsen Strasse (33B), and I went to school at Sir John Moggs, until I got old enough to go to Gutersloh's Kings School
Hi all, was there in 1975 with E battery 1 RHA, and then transferred (Sharp intake of breath) to REME, worked at the LAD on the gunpark before going onto Arborfield and then on to 94 locating REME LAD in Celle. Steve Bould
Visited the place in 2009. The whole place was in a bit of a sorry state. The buildings along the main drag (cookhouse, messes etc) didn't look as though they had been touched since the day we left, other then for the doors and windows to be smashed by vandals! 4 Armd Workshops has all gone and had been replaced with social housing. Was a bit sorry I went in the end. The Hack was a scarey place to re-visit and again, out old tower block didn't look like it had been touched since we moved out.
I was there at the same time Queens Own Hussars, we used to steal your Landrover rear light lenses on our way to the tank park and I guess you lads did the same to ours, good days
has it shut down?...in fact thats a bit of a daft question by the looks of it...i lived there in late 70s,i think the reme barracks at schloss neuhaus has gone aswell
Yep, they started moving out of Hobart in mid 90ies. By 97 ish it was mostly shut, no Naafi bar, no cinema. Only the SallyBash was still open a few years ago, don't know about now tho.
Yep, shut down and some buildings are renovated. You find there schools and a psychologic center, roundabout are houses built, some of the buildings are still not used yet, waiting.... Naafi was an asylcenter, as well some of the blocks on siegfriedstr. After all this.... Äm people, they had to rip down the houses they used. Detmold changed a lot since we left Jimmy's for breakfast in Valentino s. I'm Claudia and my greetings go out to everyone who had a great time in this town 1980 to 2000.

Eddy Rollheiser all of these photos are edited! lamp posts etc have been erased, and all of these buildings are within the grounds. I am former REME and was there when the Union Jack swayed on the flag pole.
