You guys look like such a fun crowd wish you were closer. Thanks for sharing. I feel like I've kind of plateaued and I need to push myself out of my comfort zone and start trying new things. Just gets a little scarier when you're all by yourself.
You know where to find us if you ever happen to be nearby! We know what you mean though - even though we kite with a good crew, it's easy to plateau and not push, but after this session I'm really looking forward to getting frontrolls down and learning more this summer :)
Stand on the ground, jump and rotate 360 degrees in the air and land same way with a kite you kick back aggressively with your shoulder. Keep the kite in front before 12h00 so it doesn't end up behind you :)
Yeah, we didn't run across that tip in the videos we watched, but one of us (not me, lol) figured it out while practicing. Looking forward to giving it a try next time!
great video! great topic and footage. I learned to kite on a surfboard and only have a handful of days on the twinny. I tried a backroll this winter and tomahawked the kite, the repair bill on the kite was $280. I bit scared to try this again aswell as the front roll. The good news is that I now work at the kite repair shop so I can fix the kite myself. Your group looks fun.
When learning tip 1. Front all the way to the front. 2. Back hand to the centre, or better yet take it off. 3. No more tomahawk My instinct was always to pull on back hand, mega pain that's why try no back hand, even if you wipe out ar leasts It's not so bad
cool video, next time I'll get some popcorn. If I learn a new trick, I prefer to put on an impact vest, maybe you should do the same, especially with rotations, otherwise it could be painful🤘🏼🤙🏼
Got to spring off the water straighter & start rotating immediately. The start pulling on the front hand to bring the kite forward & spot the landing. All of the failed attempts everyone is leaving the kite behind instead of bringing it forward.
Some of you pulled the left side of the bar but if you are riding in the right direction you have to pull the right side of the bar because if not, then the frontroll gets to easy out of control
When you start jumping and rotating, keep your kite around 12h00 - 11h00. Just before seeing where you're landing, move your kite to 14h00 or even lower depending on the wind strength. if you feel like you're coming down too fast, rotate your shoulders slightly and land downwind :) Tell me if it worked out !
Great video More "noobs learn" videos, make it a series. I aplaud every one taking part showing 100% percistance and good progress, all in the face of gnarley crashes. Seems like a great sesh I hope i get good enouth to try the front roll some day
Thanks :) we loved making this video but it's a bit like herding cats to pull it off. Hopefully we can film another one next time we go to Hatteras with the crew.
@@OurKiteLife rented many times around Salvo, Waves and Rodanthe, once in Avon too. Loved watching the Kite Surfers. Hope to go back there soon and take my Sea Doo for some exploring
Amazing group and the idea to learn a thing together like this is awesome! The pro tip was a relief as watching crashing and bailing you guys so hard was painful :D There is no need to go 3 meters high to learn this - unless you want to crash hard! Poor ripped kite :( I would suggest slower speed, and less aggressive steering for the first try, just keep the kite above, rotate it and than land- sink, and get going again! Once you good, will be easy to add the speed and the steering for landing! looking forward to the next one!
I love watching your videos, this is one of the best and I'm not even a kiter! ( I am a windsurfer though) great storytelling, editing, and music! Thankyou!
Yeeesss! I LOVED this video. So relatable! I learnt by doing it as a transition first, then if anything happens the kites at 12 and you can just plop down! Haha. I'm sure you've nailed it by now though! Such a fun video :)
I found that when I was learning the more basic tricks, it was easier for me to learn them by removing my back hand from the bar to eliminate the possibility of sending my kite the wrong way :) awesome vlogs by the way!
@@Foilverrückt when I was having this issue that didn't help because I would still reflexively pull on the back, I had to resort to the nuclear option I mentioned earlier
The tips Sam gave are perfect. I find that making the spin just the slightest bit inverted like Sam does, gives you a lot of control for the roll and helps you stop rotating when you want for the landing.
Since last week the front roll is my new 'signature move' :-) Great tip of Lewis Crathern: it's all about commitment. My tip: it's all about the last 15cm of your board = the push-off. Great video! We've all been there :-)))
Thanks so much, and thanks for the tip! Totally agree with Lewis - commitment is key for sure. Visualizing yourself completing the trick is also helpful too.
Falling a lot while learning new tricks sucks so much energy out of you! Good job staying committed, it's worth it. Front rolls are my go to rotation when getting big air.
Yeah - there were a lot of tired and sore kiters in the house after that session :) it was a great day though, and with the tips we received in the comments, I'm happy to say my frontrolls are coming along much better now!
As landkiter, I was learning front/back rolls on land. Even thought that land is much more solid than water, I also did it with try-bail-repeat approach. 😅 I just had to be more careful with jump height, but I managed to learn it and didn't even hurt myself. 😁 I'm still wondering how different it will be on water. Hopefully I'll get to try it this year. 😁
I have recently learned how to do a back 360 on on accident never had the guts to do on myself, I tried to do a big jump with back spin but ended up not going so high and doing a 360 without landing it more practice and I finally got it.
Fun vid to watch. Really kewl that u got a group of friends to learn with, sure it will lead to success much quicker. When I was learning I would go out with a mission to succeed but when the time came, I chickened out.
Nice video 😀, crashes are the best! I think one tips that most of you may have missed, let go the back hand for the rotation. It will help a lot in case you decide to do part 2 😉
Haha thanks, glad you enjoyed! Yes - that tip has come up a few times in the comments... cuz it works!! Saw a huge improvement in my front rolls when taking the back hand off, so thank you! :)

That first bail I had was massive. My butt was hurting for 3 days after, and after seeing the footage, I can see why!
Great job :-)

Great video! Super fun to watch and i'll be remembering those two tips from Sam the next time I go for another frontroll. *** EPIC!!!
James, what we were doing looked nothing like what Sam was doing. Is that even the same trick? X-D
If only Sam had dropped by a couple hours earlier!

The important moment is kite position during rotation and speed. All mistakes on the video with this 2 things..

Some of you pulled the left side of the bar but if you are riding in the right direction you have to pull the right side of the bar because if not, then the frontroll gets to easy out of control
Agreed! Since this session, I have found it much easier to do front rolls when I take my back hand entirely off the bar
What a great kite gang!

How about a front roll to the opposite side for a transition turn.
I've done them and they look cool.
Front roll transition? Haven’t tried them yet but we could do that for a future video :) thanks for the suggestion!
