Ken Rockwell? That Ken Rockwell? I have missed the moment when you started your channel, but now I am subscribing to you right away. This is bigger than any camera announcement of the year. Wishing you all the best, Ken, and thank you for all the hard work you've been doing for the community.
barmalini thanks! After spending a decade in Hollywood I didn’t want to take the effort to do films the way I really want to do them, but my kids and popular opinion insisted I do something for fun. Thanks!
@@KenRockwellTV first thing I did when I saw Ken Rockwell has a YT channel, is to subscribe then share the link to all my photography friends that love your site. Btw you sound very different than expected. Good stuff!
I'm way more excited about the Z50 than I was the Z6 and Z7. It seems like a much better fit for its market niche and price. Should be a fantastic compact camera.
I do wish that the card slot had been UHS-II, but for that price point I can't really complain.
It's a great camera, the only thing I'm missing to it is a pancake 35mm f/2.0 lens
Me too, love the Z50 and can do without Z7 and Z6.
True about the placement of the play button!!! After pooking myself in the eyes trying to reach the play button on my Z6, I dedicated one of the funktion buttons on front of the camera to act as a play button. The "old" place for a play button only makes sense on a DSLR, where you always take the camera away from you to watch the screen. When having a mirrorless with EVF, play is used with your eyes in the EVF! Well done Nikon! Looking forward to the next mirrorless FX camera!!!
Cheap plastic back-lens cap :(
Thanks for the comments!
I love the unboxing (and I love the camera too). Great work. I find the lenses fantastically sharp and contrasty. Very good kit.
Thanks for the comment!
So I promised myself I am not buying another crop sensor camera. Seeing the size of this 16-50 though... tempting. Looking forward to the actual review Ken thank you!
Review is here: www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/mirrorless/z50.htm Thanks!
Wow I can't wait for your official taped review! I personally love this camera
Working on that now as we speak!
A great unboxing Ken, thanks!
Thank YOU!!!!
Greetings from France! I love your website and your videos!
Merci bien!
Ughhh finally a UA-cam channel of the legend. 😎😎🇵🇭
Thanks!
Great to find out you have a UA-cam channel! As of now, I am subscribed!
Thank You!!!!
Love the mullet description for the lens! haha
Thanks, John!
nicely done, thank you for the film
Thank YOU!
This is exactly what I wanted from Nikon! So tired of lugging around 6lbs of D800 and 24-120 lens for just a casual vacation. This guy is a featherweight, has a tiny pancake lens, uses SD cards, has a built-in flash (hugely important!), and let's me explore mirror less tech (silence, optical viewfinder, focal points, etc) without any extra buttonry or bs getting in the way...I'm excited for this!
Thanks for the comment!
Ken, thanks for all the information you exude (well, it seems like it ). I think I have read most of your site.
Want to see in VIVID +3? Get lens implant surgery!
I had cataract surgery a few years ago with lens implant and now see in VIVID +3. Other lens transplant folks told me the same thing. A little research revealed that we can see just a bit farther into the blue end of the spectrum. One of the perks of being 80 years old.
Thanks!
Gray market not only doesn't have a warranty but Nikon won't even touch it for service if you need something down the road
Amen!
Great review! Best feature of the Z series: prices of dslr are dropping. But honestly, still find it a bit weird that mirrorless bodies and lenses are mostly 25-50% more expensive than their dslr counterparts. Basically for the same specs, same sensor, same output. Perhaps I am just getting old. 😏
Thats because DSLRs are old hat, development costs paid off years ago. Mirrorless is still new and expensive.
I'm thinking about upgrading my nikon d7100 to the z50. I bought my d7100 in 2013 when it first came out.
Big change. It’s all about the electronic finder. Pictures willl be the same. Be sure to get the 16-50 and 50-250 Z lenses, don’t bother trying to adopt the old 7100 lenses. Thanks!
@@KenRockwellTV
The downside is nikon doesn't have affordable z lens yet.
Do you have enough space between grip and lens, Ken? It seems the space is fairly small like Sony cameras.
Title might be called "unboxing" rather than "first look."
Summer2015 feels great!
Thanks, Ken.
excellent to see hear read you after A VERY LONG TIME.... Z50 WILL BE HERE IN 3 DAYS. 1 SOLD 2 OTHERS Cameras i hopeing to travel to norway and Italy soon i have my fingers crossed the it make a great travel camera .
could use a review of a fast none zoom lens for history shots indoors no flash allowed thanks again
Hope you love it! Thanks!
I lost it at mullet. Thanks for showing this camera. I'm wondering if it will fail, as almost everyone just uses their phones. The photos at your review and gallery are very, well photographic. Well,, duh.
My old days were 49 mm filters.
Thanks!
I really wanted to purchase this camera for sports photography (motorsports, volleyball, basketball and soccer), but I read that this camera is not suitable for action and sports photography, mainly because the auto-focus struggles with tracking moving subjects.
Maybe I was expecting the same kind of performance of the Z7 or Sony's Mirrorless cameras, now I don't know if I should buy a Z50 or a D7500/D500. :(
D500 is waaaay better for action. Get it www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d500.htm the Z50 is awful for action. The other camera is much better than z50, too.
@@KenRockwellTV Thank you for sharing that info! Great video by the way!
How bright is the EVF? I have (apart from my D90) an Olympus OMD and when, in very bright sunlight, I look into the EVF I get a very dark image, as looking into a dark cave.
It’s great; no worries here. Thanks!
Thank you for the video Ken! I am torn between the Z50 and EOS RP. You recommended buying the latter in your written review. Care to share some extended thoughs? I have been shooting professionally but now I want to focus more on landscape and travelling photography so that's a priority. Thanks for your feedback!
Have you decided which one to get? I am torn between these two too!
Not just yet! I went to a shop today to hold the RP with the 105 lens in hand I must say, the lightweight body is easily negated by the weight of the full frame lens. Feels like holding a mid-size DSLR. The lens for the Z50 are all plastic as Ken shows, in turn they guarantee a much lighter weight and I can see myself setting out only with the 16-50 at some points. However, noise is a big factor here, no need to mention, as well as overall image quality. And the price gap is just as huge, I'm trying to make up my mind all week. Also, the Z50 appearently comes with weather sealing and for me that's also a thing. The RP doesn't have any kind.
@@Somanous Ah! Which camera has better overall image quality though?
@@yapboontat1675 The EOS RP. The Z50 is crop sensor so doesn't really hold a candle to the Z50 in terms of details and noise performance. I'm still about to go through shots of the Z50 to see how well it does.
Soma Szebellédi get the Canon EOS RP for full frame or the z50 for APS-C. If you have ask which format is better, just get the z50.
Ken: Is there any way to shorten the image review time on the LCD and viewfinder? When I take a photo, the image stays on my screen for about 5 seconds. If I want to quickly recompose and shoot another photo, I have to wait until the image review clears! I would prefer a 1- to 2-second review.
There's no menu option for time; so just tap the shutter halfway when you want to move on to taking rather than reviewing. Thanks for asking!
@@KenRockwellTV -- Actually, there IS a menu option to change the image review time, but Nikon for some reason has chosen to hide it in an unlikely location. I can see why they did this; it's a setting that you probably will change only once, and then forget about it.
First, go into the Custom Setting Menu (pencil tab); Choose C -- Times/AE lock. Choose section C3 -- Power off delay; Choose the third item -- Image review. Here, you can set the Image review time anywhere from 2 seconds to 10 minutes!
It's a real roundabout way to access this setting, but as I said, you probably will only change it once.
Can you upload wildlife/bird photography from zoom lens?
That’s not my thing; here’s what I shot with 50-250 so far www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/z/50-250mm.htm#sampleimages
Disappointment you didint show the strap. How is the touch feel in the strap? Is the feel Nice and soft against the skin?
A have this and I can tell that the strap looks great but not as comfortable as the older version was. Maybe it needs to be weared in a little bit but you should keep the old one too. Hope this helped ...
Thanks for asking; I never use camera-maker straps so I didn't think to look at it.
Is it true that there is no way to use an external intervalometer for exposures longer than 30s on the Z50?
Beats me; I use the Z50's great TIME mode and I'm done. Thanks!
If compared with XT30 which one good at low light performance ?
That’s not the question. Much larger difference is in how pictures look. Use Z50 for places and things; only consider Fuji if you’re mostly a people photographer.
@@KenRockwellTV thank you.
I'd have a hard time buying a Z50 body over a full frame Canon RP body, which is close enough in cost. Buuuut, Canon only has the $900 24-240mm to cover his range in glass...
Agreed, similar price and each is better for different applications.
Would have bought one if it is F mount lens
I would tend to agree with you on that point
F mount is from 1959 and not the best for mirrorless.
Like it but would love to see proper review....
See www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/mirrorless/z50.htm Working on it, camera just arrived yesterday.
@@KenRockwellTV Will we get a review on the lenses too? Love the unboxing btw
Amaar absolutely! Gotta review camera first. Great news: while both lenses are plastic mounts, optically they are both excellent. Autofocus is also ultra fast, maybe fastest I’ve seen in Mirrorless this side of the Sony A9.
@@KenRockwellTV Wow! I expected this kit to preform well, but not quite to the level your describing! This is great news as I have ordered the kit a few days back and can't wait to finally get my hands on it. I needed something smaller than my older Nikon DSLRs. Can't wait for the full review! Thanks Mr. Ken
With another day of use under my belt, I am soon to pronounce this The Worlds Best APS-C Mirrorless Camera.
Hi Ken, nice to see you on YT..
Just a remark that has nothing to do with photography.
In many sentences you lift the pitch at the very end. Nearly anybody else does that only for questions. Some people may think that is some dialect thing. For me as a non-native English speaker it is irritating.
Else - nice unboxing and i hope we will have a real review soon!
Thanks for the observation, never noticed that. I'll give it a listen. Danke!
There is nothing wrong with the rising pitch at the end of Ken's statements. It is becoming common in other Anglo-American speaking countries. There are several other UA-camrs who do the same thing.
And my advice is never to come to Texas. The accent will drive you nuts.
where is iphone factory?
It’s in Heaven, crafted by angels.
haha
@@KenRockwellTV ha ha
Never heard your voice. Your voice sounds like a young person.
Is that good or bad?
And he has the hands of a young person. I'm jealous.
Ken Rockwell Of course, it is good. It is better than having old people voice.
Other than that, how does the video sound? I keep messing with mic technique. The two most recent videos (z50 first look and xpro3 unbox) are done quite differently than the others like z85mm and Z7-6 review.
Hear any differences? Prefer either? Why?
@@KenRockwellTV I have no complaints. The sound is crystal clear.
CANERA! CAMERA! CAMERAA
Thanks!
