    I saw this when I was a very little kid and Loved it, it's still one of my favorites. Especially the music. I was 32 yrs old when I finally learned that it was Felix Mendelssohn's "Hebrides Overture" (also known as "Fingers Cave) when @work on my NPR station from St Petersburg, WUSF. Just about every old song or part of a song, be it classical music or modern tune, was used by WBros. and I know and love them by heart. Thanks to those that made these gems possible on UA-cam.🤓❤

    Brilliant. classic WB cartoon. Whether it's one of his bizarre desert scapes or this jungle background worthy of Matisse painting, NOBODY does backgrounds like Chuck Jones. Such clean line and colors. The humor mixes surrealism with slapstick creating one hilarious WTF moment after another. The 'Fingal's Cave" minah bird theme has haunted me since childhood. But I mostly remember it from another cartoon, where a character was sleepwalking through all sorts of danger to this tune. I finally found it, maybe it'll stop playing in my head now. And Inky, once you get past the dubious humor of the name, and them big ol' lips he's treated with no more or less dignity that other warner brothers cartoon character; essentially a foil, like the Coyote. But the bird. The bird totally makes this cartoon. He has that same taciturn shows up out of nowhere + is totally unstoppable thing that Droopy has, only ten times more so...

  • @ArcaneAzmadi

    Another one of the classics. The Caveman Inki shorts have always stuck with me from childhood, largely because of the Mynah's iconic theme music.

      Huh. That's interesting. I think Inki represents man, bumbling his way thru life, the lion represents the physical material realm trying to kill him, and the bird represents the human spirit which overcomes the material, but doesn't explain anything to the man, because he knows it's all illusion, and sees it objectively.

    I heard a million times how Ben Washam, when Shamus Culhane first came to the Jones Unit, wanted to watch him and see how an ex-disney animator approached his work. Culhane knocked him dead by literally sitting at his desk for four days, and then roughing out the whole sequence on friday.
    From what I've heard, it was the scene of the about 2:25 meeting. 0.e
    Culhane says that he HAD to think about it first - he had half the picture! (The other half is Bobe Cannon, and easy to tell apart. smooth.)

      How the fuck can you say "no race card" when you white civilization did the vast majority of suppression of another race and literally have racist caricatures in the animation. Like you are clearly are being ridiculous @@ChocolateFizzles

    • @HooDatDonDar
      @HooDatDonDar 5 років тому

      Suppression of other races was invented in Africa, by Africans, for use on other Africans.
      Looking past contemp. squabbles, the boy hunter here iscurious, trying to deal with a curious world. His caratature is no more exaggerated than other types in cartoons, hillbillies, etc. And there are none of the usual stereotypes, which appear in those cartoons that are actually racist. Not a watermelon in sight. Only thing open to criticism is the name ‘Inki’. That shows an outside point of view, as no one around there would think the character was distinctively inky..
      These should be revived for the Mynah bird. Did Jones ever explain him? I take him to be the big events and ideas that sweep through ordinary life, with unexpected and incomprehensible results.

    Also, whoever is confused by this, in 'Animation from Script to Screen,' Culhane writes that the cartoon he tried high-speed on is 'Little Lion Hunter,' but both 'Talking Animals' and IMDB confirm that the clips were from this, and it's the only Inki cartoon Culhane animated on.
    (He only did about five cartoons for jones (!). His was the scene in 'Bugs Bunny and the Three Bears' with the mother trying to kiss Bugs at the end, that Thad K. gives to Rudy Larriva (not in Jones' unit at the time.)

  • @yohannbiimu
    @yohannbiimu 16 років тому

    It's my understanding that the animator who worked on the Lion in this cartoon was Shamus Culhane, a maverick in the industry. He began at Fleischer's studio working on the early Betty Boops and graduated up to Disney's Snow White and Pinocchio. When he wore out his welcome at Disney's and Fleischer's (again), he went to WB where Leon Schlesinger offered him a directors job. He worked on this one cartoon, and when Schlesinger reneged on his director's offer, he quit.

    I almost thought I had imagined this. I only remembered the music (from Fingal's Cave) and that black bird walking and hopping. Strange minah bird. Strange idea altogether, but brilliant. There's always a controversy about anything that might be construed as a "black stereotype". I remember seeing this on TV early in the '60s, then it mysteriously disappeared and I thought, no, that's too weird, it COULDN'T have been a cartoon! And here it is. UA-cam, you've done it again.

  • @liimlsan2
    @liimlsan2 12 років тому

    Also, if you look at a lot of scenes of Culhane's lion, his back legs look identical to Pluto's. His Inki also has a much more literally shaped head (especially the hair and lips), and he takes Chuck's layouts more literally than Cannon. (He only lasted five cartoons in the Jones unit, he was only in Schlesinger to direct war films, and left when he found out they were farming them to Tashlin. He went to Lantz afterwards..)
    Cannon's style you can't unsee. They're made of mercury.

    Did someone say 'not love that dratted Minah bird!' I watched these cartoons as a kid and that damned Minah bird scared the pants off me! Look at that last scene - that's a feathered dinosaur! Minahsaurus Rex at least! Very effective indeed. They had such an effect on me that I cannot now hear Fingal's cave without shivers running up my spine. But I agree with a lot of the comment in the stupidity of banning crreatiions like this - these forms of censorship are like prohibition - useless.

    According to Reg Hartt (look him up, he's brilliant) Disney once asked Jones what the hell he was trying to say with this cartoon, to which Jones replied, "The fifth dimension". He and Clampett were both secretly very esoteric minds, and that for me is a big part of what makes the Looney Tunes legacy so endlessly fascinating.

    I trained myself to recognize Bobe Cannon's style with Mike Kazaleh's help and a reel of him by Thad Komorowski; Culhane's style I learned from his animation for commercials, Fleischer, Disney, etc. In 'Talking Animals,' Culhane says that he and Bobe Cannon were the only animators on this cartoon (although he says it was 'Little Lion Hunter' in 'Script to Screen'); this was a sobering experience for him. First time he animated in 4 years, and had completely lost touch (and this looks labored.)

    Bobe Cannon 0:29-2:12 2:47-2:58 4:30-5:50 (I especially love 0:59)
    Shamus Culhane 2:12-2:47 2:58-4:30 5:56-7:20
    Culhane gets the record, at 3:31 to Cannon's 3:15.
    Easy to tell apart, for Jones cartoons.
    What I find intriguing about this cartoon is that Chuck is obviously testing Shamus out to see what he was GOOD at. The cartoon is so amorphous and diverse in the middle section Culhane animates (personality, action, setting, etc.) that you could easily see the results... 0.e

    Now Im A Black Person, And I Really Did Not Find The Inki Cartoons Rasist. But I Do See Why They Dont Air On Television Anymore. I Think These Cartoons Should Be Restored For DVDz Regardless Of Original Or Blue Ribbon Titles.

    I remember mynah. bird being in cartoons without Inki. The two dogs that go into an automated house run into him when he comes out of a magician's hat.

    He da MAN... errrr da BIRD! The bird is just a black mass of evil that harms everyone he comes into contact with. No wonder the beasts are afraid of him. I like the fact that he plays no favorites, he messes with everyone he comes into contact with.
