- These handmade beasts will undoubtedly make every camper's heart beat faster: Individually designed and extravagantly furnished long-distance mobile homes are the latest craze on the caravan market - at least for those hobby campers who can afford the unusual models. The off-road companions and rolling luxury suites are priced no upper limits. Who are the owners of the most expensive mobile homes in Germany, and what about the hoods of their rolling homes?

I've always wondered what I would get first if I became wealthy. Now I know.
I always thought I'd get a jet plane, but you can't take one of those offroad. Well, you can, but only for a few feet then they stop.
This was a fantastic documentary. Thank you Free Documentary for your quality programs.
I met a German couple that had one of these. I told them about great and beautiful backroads that these trucks can easily handle, what did they say? "We usually just stick to the highway and easy dirt roads." Everytime I've seen one of these they are always shiny and brand new driving down the highway.
45:50 “if you’ve never experienced being in the cabin, it’s like being in a big car” such wisdom
A little bit sneaky on the Fire-truck build. As you can see early on when the build company first gets the red truck, it says "1222" on the door - that is a 12-ton GVWR truck with a 220 hp V6 (OM 401/421/441) engine. But later when the "cab has been painted" and he tilts it up to show the engine, the door insignia says "1428" - that is a 14-ton truck with a 280-hp, 14-litre V8 (OM 402/422/442) that he is (rightfully) showing off. Somewhere along the line they swapped in a third vehicle (the green police truck with the big cab has a "1217" on the door - 12-ton but less powerful 170-hp engine). Still - I love the workmanship and practical attitude of the smaller builder. Excellent end-product and terrific documentary!!!
42:38 - "It is cost him 250000 EUROS. In some places you can get a house for that"
- Well, now, he got his house everywhere...
in argentina u can get 5 house for that price
In Afrika 10 Houses + For That..
I like the guy who recycles as much as possible. The smaller truck is more practical for adventure. Schwartz knows what he is doing.
Only Mercedes downer was rear crashbar digging in during offroad trials. Has all the right items, with difflocks etc and I'm jealous of the impressive engine , being resigned to 'mere' 5.9 liter OM366LA in my Unimog. The 1980's firetruck approach with no vehicle electronics will be near 100% reliable and globally fixable. I met some MAN global travellers with a new truck with numerous horror stories of being marooned by high technology. I know which of these 2 trucks I would go with if I hadn't had the Unimog implant.
German manufacturing is great. No uneven panel gaps, everything lines up perfectly, and everything is built to last. They take their time and do it is right instead of rushing a build just to make an extra dollar.
The old firetruck conversion seems just right. The other one is just way over the top.
I agree
Agreed, it's like the difference between camping & glamping.

The best documentary I have seen so far!!
I've been learning English for many years! And it wasn't in vein! It's a really good canal with the good speaker: Interested, Informative and clear to understand even for foreigners!
What I thought was a masterpiece of a production decision was that you featured both vehicles, one, which the everyday person whom aspires to owning a custom built 4x4 offroad motorhome could envisage, and the Qatari 8x8 monster motorhome of the opulence as standard, money no object variety.
I respected both build companies and their customers decisions on their vehicle preferences.
There is absolutely nothing wrong about having the vehicle of your choice built to your specifications and to your price level.
The Qatari 8x8 exactly fitted the design criteria of the owner, and was outstanding in every way to meeting that requirement.
It truly was an elite, land based super yacht of it's type and great to see being created.
The Mercedes 4x4 was far more practical and user friendly for the owner, and it lacked nothing (except perhaps a CTIS).
Thank you for this excellent video.
Good perspective
all the way to Africa on safari and you want to watch television, unbelievable
Maybe they intend to watch documentaries on elephants, and lions instead of looking out the window. lol

You'll be doing a lot of on highway, boring driving. So just because it's there doesn't mean you're retired to watch it constantly. Derp.
32:13 "a new exhaust system produces a throaty sound" sounds like it is falling apart 🤣
Great engineering. This are the ultimate toys for the rich.
This was a really enjoyable video. I was really unmotivated because it was too long but I was hooked within the first 2 minutes.

The Germans never cease to amaze with their technical know how.
I mean, yes, but ...then again both teams used threaded bolts all the way to the head on high demand applications where those threads will chew through the metal, ... so there's that.
In case it's not immediately obvious, you're supposed to use a shoulder bolt.

That Arab Prince's machine is so obscenely massive, I don't expect it to tread that well over soft land.
@Cyrus the Acceptable, I'm sure it will never even be used.
It's got 8 massive, wide, large diameter tires. I'll bet ground pressure is fairly low. Go watch the Tatra trucks, they're unstoppable.
@John Hadleigh
Interesting, thank you for your insights
@@Rubbernecker yep
Best info channel thank you!!!!
I love these things.
The Qatar Truck has great potential. I think the prince was rather short sided and should have built 2 trucks. 1 for the bedrooms showers and a small refrigerator. The second truck with the kitchen, storage, office with a communication setup with a deployable satellite dish. It is highly unlikely he will be traveling with just his family so may as well bring enough space to really spread out. The last thing to do is make sure it fits one of the Russian transport aircraft and he can take them anywhere.

Prima! Thanx 4 the video. Good to hear that a old tech is sometimes better than new tech. ....
Those old school Mercedes trucks are so cool!

That trip to Morocco. Gotta have some balls to go through some of the sketchier regions in Africa in a clearly pricy RV.
That's what the jeeps full of armed guards are for, silly!
@Ben Silva driving through Syria, Iraq, Libya is the sketchy part. Never said anything bad about Morocco. They guy didn't buy an off road vehicle to take European highways and take a ferry from Spain.
Im sure 'others' would ship the the truck for him to fly in and drive though Morocco
The Prince will be accompanied by a German Panzer Division of battle tanks.
AK-47 cant touch them!! And 4, A-10 Warthogs for air cover !!
Morocco is not sketchy.

Despite of so many stupid comments, CONGRATULATIONS, amazing video! Tks guys!
I like the firetruck myself....but they are both impressive!!
" A truck weighing machine" ... We call that a scale.. haha..
in india we call it a weigh bridge.
It's actually called a weighbridge.
Osel Somar its called a scale u idiot
in Iran, we call it bascule, I think it's a french word.
It's a scale, but in a bigger scale(size).
awesome trucks/homes!
Excellent Video
I wonder why they use a bolt threaded end-to-end for the rocker axle. The metals would grind each other under high load and after some time you'd get some play. Wouldn't it be wiser to machine a bolt with a long shoulder and make thread only a necessary length, use 2 bolts instead of just 1, and machine the end to be smaller than the threaded part and put a groove that would take a circlip.
For over 1.2 million euro using ready made bolt is a cheap-out.

The narration is best!
“Certificated”
The guy doesn't know shit about what he's talking, but that's likely not his fault. Likely this is a script written by a snop who knows little to nothing about the subject. I mean...they use unstable for welding...wtf is the weld going to do, fall off the side of a mountain? Tip?
He probably meant chemically unstable. I'm used to it being called Contaminated. Either way, his description was awkward but good enough for non-welders.
what about the way he pronounces Quatar
@@aserta I don't think whoever wrote the script even needs to know anything about the subject to know that it's certified, not certificated 🤣

@Hello Garvin how are you doing
Wow excellent work
Good luck with these things truly off road.
Just get a Jeep or a VW bug.
At 29:55 "The carpenter will put in 6000 working hours." That is 3 years. Weird for something that has to be done in a few months.
@Doc Moore I am assuming those hours are divided between multiple carpenters mate.
Yes, is 6000 man hours. So it's divided up by several men.
The cameras are on him, he has to pretend to be good value for the money he is charging. Once the cameras are off he gets busy with the Ikea flat pack and a 10L tub of pva glue.
Still makes no sense that 6000 man hours would be used.
What does a german carpenter make 25-40€ ish. That would be 150k-240k€ just on the woodwork. If this were true this company would be bankrupt years ago.
I would assume on a project like this there would be minimum 3 people working on it. That's 250 8 hour shifts each, but they will almost certainly work overtime or have more people work to have this done in a few short months.
This is like offroading a house. I love it !
That 8 wheel Man 8x8 Camper Truck is badass
Great video. I would take the fire truck pretty much as it was, and do minimal enhancements myself. 35k at most.
22:05 i can feel that.. Hard too boost working skills when their is watching.., i thought im the only one can feel that
Informative. Simply unmatched.
That old Mercedes Truck is great...You can fix it anywhere. Worth every dime. When you realize a Class B Road Trek cost $140,000.00 and it's a small Van...

For the Mercedes unit, when done, 250,000 Eu doesn't seem excessive. Look at the prices of vehicles made in the US that compare. 3 times as much.

Why is the roof section designed to drain into the wall section. I am sure there is some " magic" sealant used at this point but why not overlap the wall in a watertight fashion.Gravity always works. Lloyd, roofer of 35 years.
Lloyd Holm noticed that too
Yeah, I'm no expert but that looked like a dumb way to go...
I might have missed it. But exactly on which part of the video?
@LiM I'm guessing the part at 26:32 where they slot the roof section inside the wall section.

What went on with the cab of the Merc? First it is a day cab that is shown being changed to a full sleeper cab. Then when it is finished, it has a half-sleeper cab. Very strange or did I miss something?
Yes, I noticed that too, not sure what is going on there.
Also, the fire truck was a 1222 .the green one with the long cab is a 1217, while the silver one has a rest cab is a 1428AF! The televison crew have mucked up somewhere.
Awesome!
The job of the rockers is not to keep the container horizontal, it is to avoid the container from breaking down when the frame twists. If the container was fixed to the chassis, it would fall apart when the chassis is flexing.
I laughed when I saw they made the prince and his people wear reflective vests. germans. hahahh
William Hendrix that’s pretty standard procedure for any kind of production environment
Numsz yeah, obviously. but he’s being led by the head of the company, who isn’t wearing a vest, and they are the highest paying customers ever. so normally you wouldn’t bust their balls like that. it’s kind of funny that they did
@@williamhendrix3253 It's to show workers that there are people, who don't work there, are on site. The outer most panel should have been part of the roof, not the wall as you see.
I agree completely, I left my comment before I saw yours. Good eye.
You're right and I think in the next frame you can see they fixed it.
