Ok, here's the story on Kevin: He was the last member to join PTX. Scott and Ben B., who is the group's producer and co-arranger, found Kevin on UA-cam, beatboxing while playing cello. Scott, who was a poor college student at the time, and Ben pooled their resources to fly Kevin out for an audition. (Scott is the creator of PTX; he put the group together. It was his vision). Kevin initially said "no" to joining PTX. Kevin, who speak fluent Chinese, was all set to become a doctor, studying pre-med in college. Scott and Ben convinced him to join PTX, and Kevin now says he has no regrets. Kevin often says he never imagined for himself a career in music. Medicine was his destiny, but now he can't imagine a profession outside of music. Thank goodness Scott and Ben were so convincing and got Kevin to join PTX. Also, Kevin and Avi lived together and remain close. Those of us in the Pentaholics community really feared how Kevin would fare without Avi in the group. They were/are so close, kinda like Scott and Mitch. It's good to see that Kevin is OK and moving forward with the group despite not having Avi there. They often refer to each other as "brothers," while Scott and Mitch refer to themselves as "sisters." LOL
"He just sang a song with an instrument!" You hit the nail on the head with that :) He really makes that cello sing, and that, in my opinion, is the way to tell a true musician
Hey guys! Did you know his cello is called Beyoncè. It’s so cute. I have two requests for you. First one is: I should tell your momma on ya by Scott Hoying. You can hear his base really well here. Second one is: Sign of the Times by Kevin Olusola. He’s amazing and so talented again.
I have no doubt Kevin would have been a great physician, as was his original intent, but oh, what we all would have missed if he decided to turn Scott down and not join PTX! He is an incredibly talented and spectacular musician! We are so lucky to be able to hear and see him.
"The one thing I try to do is singing through the way I play the cello. When I play the cello I'm a singer, and the medium just happens to be the cello" -Kevin K.O. Olusola =]
Can you imagine writing this arrangement? Think of all the layers! Multiple tracks of piano, cello, beat-boxing, and voice, each coming in and out and perfectly balanced. (I think some of the piano was looped, but maybe it was all live. I keep forgetting to watch the pianist, with Kevin there.) I picture a giant spreadsheet--probably all in Kevin's head, not on paper or computer screen at all.
And people think that cellos can't speak. But only if they have never seen Kevin do what he does so unbelievably well. Please do a reaction of his KOver of Harry Styles "Sign Of The Times". Another virtuoso performance that includes not only cello and beat boxing but keyboard (organ and piano), incredible vocals and percussion.
Four of my favorite moments: That riff at 3:23; Marco singing with the cello at 4:01; Kevin's grin of sheer joy at 4:50; and Ali's "Hah!" when the music starts again at 5:42. And both of your facial expressions throughout! Thank you for appreciating Kevin so much. It makes my heart happy.
Actually, he survived the cancer, but the chemo itself destroyed his heart. His death was unfortunately a heart attack(or heart failure, I don't know if they're the same).
You can tell he approaches his playing of these pop songs from a singing perspective. He does runs and ad libs that a singer would do. I think that's what makes him so incredible - his musical IQ and versatility. For example, he doesn't beat box like so many beatboxers do - just making cool effects for cool effects' sake. He does it with a sense of musicality and understanding of how it brings the song to life. Scott is my favorite member of PTX because I'm a vocalist first, but Kevin is the most talented and I believe the most essential to why the group is special.
Kevin is brilliant. How much talent can one human have?!! It's so cool how in this video, Kevin made an instrument sing, while Pentatonix is about turning voices into accompanying instruments.
When he played at Carnegie Hall with Yo-Yo Ma,, Yo-yo said that he was the most exceptional player he has ever heard; with a touch that is second to none. Pretty good compliment coming from one of the world's best!
I don't know who first said it, but I've seen it commented a few times that Kevin sings with his cello and plays his voice like an instrument. The next time you watch a KOver, may I suggest Demi Lovato's Heart Attack. :-)
BTW, have you seen any of the live holiday tour PTX stuff? They're on their 1st Holiday Tour right now! Scott is at the top of his vocal game and is so cute when he forgets the lyrics opening night (to their current single "Deck the Halls" no less.. 😁) and when tries to hide a laugh when Santa comes out and dances with them during "Up on the Housetop" which I HIGHLY recommend viewing. Then we have Matt and Kevin open "Let it Snow" with a hip-hop duet while doing beats and bass! You have GOT to check these out! Tis the season! Love you guys!
You NEED to react to defying gravity by superfruit. You’ll be so amazed they’re so good. (It includes Mitch with green face paint and Scott with a wig lol, thought you should know)
Oh, Kevin.. How talented are thee... Let me count the ways... Sorry! Too many ways to count! The finger work is focused on with a lead guitar solo... I agree, camera man... Fingers!
Because of its definition, I rarely use this word. Since it is to be used with the one and only K O . . . I hereby nominate "F A B U L O U S" -- If any word belongs with Kevin Olusola, it is fabulous!
MAProductions Please react to: Daneliya Tulyeshova 'Stone Cold' - Blind Audition . Wowow!!!! This kid is so amazing!!!! She's from Kazakhstan. And... At the beginning of the video she said: "God help me"

Kevin is definitely the most talented, yet most underappreciated member of Pentatonix.

I totally agree with both of these!

Savant. Will reach and heal many more with his music, than he would have as a physician.
Kevin has said that his intention is to make the instrument sing!!! You nailed it!

The piano player was Jason Gaviati, aka Gavi and he worked with Lindsey Stirling. Unfortunately, he died of cancer a while back
Actually, he survived the cancer, but the chemo itself destroyed his heart. His death was unfortunately a heart attack(or heart failure, I don't know if they're the same).
Oh! That is So Hard to hear… 😔
Oh no that’s so sad😢
Kevin knows how to make his Cello -aka-(Beyonce) SING.
