I just want to say, thank you for uploading this. I'm moving to a place with a trap field 20 minutes away, want to learn, and it's nice to see a raw video like this with nothing fancy, just a full round played with no cuts or wild camera angles. Gives me a good feeling for how the rhythm and pace of a round typically is.
Thanks for watching! That guy is me and it's pretty common to rest your barrel on your toe if you shoot a break open gun like I have. They actually make toe tabs so you don't get rings and soot on your shoes. Any other gun than a break open and I'll agree with you 100%, but with the breach open, and the shell primer totally removed from the action, there's no practical way the gun could discharge in that position . It is the golden rule in shooting, and for that I thank you for bringing it up.
This is probably one of the best videos made of true trap shooting. The quality is so good in some shots you can even see the wadding flying through the air. On a side note excellent shooting fellas.

I use to work for the AMA when I was younger. They did 2 events in Dayton OH. I worked in the shell house and as a trap loader. Those things were old too. Some made in the 1940's . It's been shut down for several years now.

Matt, I totally agree with you (how can anyone argue with Dan Carlisle?) but a couple of things of note. 1. It's compressed video, so we're shooting faster than we were in real life. 2. For new shooters, I agree with Phil Kiner on the subject of speed. Speed is not the desired result but the end result of good technique. Good technique includes good target acquisition, and a nice smooth, economical move to the bird. In other words, desire to use good fundamentals and let the shot cadence be dictated by that.
Good call, I see some people trying too hard to shoot the bird faster just for the sake of looking fast. You can win the race but still lose the war. By the way, how'd you get the targets to show up so well? I was a told a neutral density filter should help on sunnier days. I've uploaded a few vids on my channel of me shooting at local ATA shoots and the targets are barely visible. I'm using a GoPro Hero 3 White Edition in 720p 30 FPS.
The reason I posted this video was to show an actual round of American Trap. Too many video's on UA-cam of people shooting clay targets from a spring or hand thrower, which is all fun, but not trap. I thought it was time to just show a round of trap.....that's why I named the video Real Trapshooting. Thanks for watching!
I just started shooting trap about 1 month ago and I love it. Still have a lot to learn and need to practice a lot but i am determined that one of these days my nick name will be Annie Oakley.
All adjustable combs work the same way. The more you raise your comb, the higher the gun will shoot. My advice would be to make minor adjustments up or down until the gun shoots where you look. When I make any kind of adjustment, it's small and I mean like millimeters, then I'll shoot at least 50 shells through it. By the way the target breaks, I can then figure out if I need to raise or lower the comb and then I'll make another small adjustment. Hope this helps!
Thanks for watching. This isn't my regular club but the terrain is mostly loamy soil with tall pines in the background. To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of the way this trap is laid out but it's only a small parcel of land so they made the most of it. I prefer skyline targets myself (no trees).
Shot skeet for the first time today. First time I have ever shot anything other than a .22 at pop cans. And first round got a 12, and the second i got 19. And I now am in love with the sport.
If you watch the video, you'll see we only have 4, but the same rules apply if you have 5, 3, 2 or even one shooter. The leftmost shooter always starts the first round of 5, and once everyone is rotated, that shooter starts that next round of 5 and soforth until everyone has shot 5 shots at all 5 posts. I dont know a single club that doesnt. I shot a Model 12 competitively for about 4 seasons and did really well with it. The man shooting on post 4 at the beginning is shooting that very gun.....good luck! Shoot to win!
@Magnum4554 When you start a round, it's always the person that's the furthest left that begins the round, then when you rotate positions, that person always starts it off and so it goes till everyone shoots 25. Hope that helps!
I'll agree with you in one respect, it's a lot of bucks for a stock. I had one for several years when I shot my Kreighoff. One thing I did like was the recoil reducer. I didn't care much for the comb that it came with or the Ultimate Fit comb I put on it. I know people that swear by them though.
@Crich It's perfectly acceptable to close your breach prior to the other shooter taking a shot. That shooter you are referring to is me and I have shot competition for over 20 years. It is advisable however if you are a new shooter, to wait till it's your turn to close your gun.

Secondly, I forgot my shell catcher but rest assured I policed my empties and disposed of them properly after this video was taken but good point. Shouldnt leave this stuff on the ground. First trap day coming up for me, and since I'll be shooting my own reloads, I hope to be able to collect my empties to use the hulls again (given the hull is about 30-40% of the cost of a birdshot reload in 2023).
@@SilntObsvr just remember to take a pouch for your empties. I forgot mine that day but it’s a small club so I policed mine after shooting. I dont reload any more. Cost of lead went through the roof!
@@walman16 I had a carpenter's nail belt that had room for a box of shells in one side and all the empties in the other, but I couldn't find it (nor my electronic muffs) so I bought one that's made specifically for shotgun sports; one section exactly fits a full box of 2 3/4 shells, the other will hold (they claim) up to 50 empty hulls. Price of lead may be high, but... At 15 cents for a primed hull (all plastic, I'll probably get half a dozen reloads out of each), 2 1/2 to 3 cents a wad (Claybusters and Ballistic Products clone wads), $65 for 25 lb of reclaimed shot (roundly 13 shells to the pound for 1 1/8 ounce loads so twenty cents for the shot), and 15+ grains of powder ($40/lb, that's about 8 1/2 cents per shell), I figure my per-shell cost for loading my own at around 47 cents a shell -- with target loads running $10 a box, I'm not saving anything, but you can't always find them at $10/box -- and every time I reload a box of shells, the cost for each shot drops a little. Primers by the 1000 are about 6 cents, so that brings my load cost down to just about the same as Estate or Fiocchi target loads. And I can cast slugs, buckshot, or punkin balls for a couple bucks a pound (plus shipping, but I can get 25 lb of ingots shipped for under $15), once I have the molds; that makes it cheaper to shoot slugs or buckshot (that I have molds for) than birdshot.
Walman 16. So how would the rotation go if there was just 3 people. We take up the frist 3 spots to the left and we shoot 5 times at each station. Once first rotation is complete, everyone shifts over to the right until we shoot 25 times each?
When you have a bunch of experienced shooters on the line, you get a rhythm where every person only takes like 2 seconds to shoot. It really helps the flow of things, and I find I shoot better in that kind of setup.
@Magnum4554 Where I go there's 5 spots per station. You just pay them and they tell you what station you're going to and that they'll call you when the current station is done with their 25 rounds, then it's up to your group who goes when.

I have choke tubes, but you might as well weld a full choke in my gun as I use it for everything expect first shot in doubles. My choice of tubes for singles (what I'm shooting here) is not the norm though. A lot of shooters use light full, improved modified, improved cylinder for singles. Earlier in my career I messed around with choke tubes and patterning but found eliminating that variable helped my mental performance more than any gains choke tubes could provide, but do what works best 4 U!
Great score! Keep up the good work! My only advice is get some good instruction early if you're interested in being a serious shooter. It's easier to develop good habits than it is to undo bad ones!

Yes. Though you can't shoot anything larger than 12 gauge, there is no rule prohibiting you from shooting down to .410. All the competition American Trapshooters I know shoot 12 gauge however.....

Sorry, I've never even seen trap shooting before so this is new to me. I have though, shot skeet. Is this an easier version for guys that don't have the patience or marksmanship skills to shoot skeet? It just looks SO incredibly easy! Especially in comparison to skeet. Hell, I could do this with my .357!
Trap shooting is the best!! Last time I went to the gun range I got to shoot these really cool assault rifles at a stationary target. It was cool but I was like, "Okay where's the trap? I like shotguns better." :) Nothing beats a shotgun. Except maybe a paintball gun. LOL
That's quite the shooting pace. I'll be shooting my first trap day ever next weekend, my only shotgun is an 870 Express, and I'll be asking before the shoot about things like loading the magazine for a round vs. single loading (which would surely slow me down, I'm not an experienced shotgun shooter, even though I've seen it done on film at remarkable speed). I've shot skeet once, two rounds, broke one target; hopefully I'll do better at trap with all the targets going more or less away from me and no doubles to worry about. Edit: Okay, found a good page on trap, single loading only unless shooting doubles (I won't be doing that until I can hit 20+ in a round of singles, though I might try wobble trap sooner). I need to get one of those from-the-box pouches, then...
And just realized I'd been conflating members' trap practice with open-to-public skeet shoot days -- I'll be shooting skeet, not trap. Best get my shucking up to speed...
Everything a serious shooter does has a purpose. When you call "pull" you have to move your mouth which could disrupt your sight picture, especially when you cheek the gun hard like me. It also serves the purpose of providing a uniform noise to the mic.
A call is a personal thing. At the start of the video, guy on Post 1 (post most left) yells Keeeeahhh!, I'm next to him and yell Ahhhhhh!, Next to me calls Pull!, Guy on Post 4 is my dad and he's yelled Hoooowwwww! as long as I can remember. The reason I don't call pull is threefold. 1) I don't have to move my mouth and possibly disrupt my sight pattern, 2) It's a uniform noise that trips the machine in a consistent release and 3) Concentration. I don't have to worry about calling "pull"
Roland Kee I shoot a semi. A Beretta Outlander. No problem. I did put a shell catcher on it though, to not hit the guy next to me and also so I don't have to pick up em up.
***** I think it might not trigger it because I (and most shooters) close the action immediately on the report of the previous shooter. There is a delay after the pull or else the report of the shotguns would launch another bird. One of the places is about 3 miles away, I'm a member there. All the others are about 30 to 40 minutes away. I'm a member at one of those too. They all are open to the public for trap certain days and times. There's another club near me but it's not open to the public for trap and I can't justify joining another club and I really like the one that's 30 min. away.
in NZ you are able to have a live shell in the breach of your gun(while shooting DTL) (o/u). yes your are right with a semi-auto but unfortunately incorrect with U/O
The game you're viewing is Singles and you are correct, of the three American Trap events, Singles is the easiest in one respect, but the mental aspect of Singles is very challenging. You have to be perfect usually through 200 shots to make a shootoff and then another 200 to win. Hard part about Skeet is shooting smaller gauges. For me, ( I'm not trying to start a war with a bunch of pantyhose wearing Skeet shooters), 12 gauge Skeet is a cake walk. Learn the leads, there's no variables...
would you guys be able to make a trap shooting video on technique and how the rotation works where you walk and how. im joining a neighboring schools trap team in march and would like to know watt im doing and not look like a foul
I guess i've been doing it wrong, i pull in the ready position muzzle pointing down and when the skeet goes flying off then i aim and fire. but i guess you aim in the area before the skeet fly's off?

25 chipped birds beats 24 "Smoked" ones any day. But there is a cool factor in totally smoking a clay.

When I stopped shooting in 1994 i was AA 27 A. I really enjoyed your posting. As you stated the majority of UA-cam videos are if hand thrown clays .
Yep, they are pretty cool. I had one on my other gun but like a wood stock better. They have a great recoil reduction system on them.

I'll be shooting my first trap day ever next weekend, my only shotgun is an 870 Express, and I'll be asking before the shoot about things like loading the magazine for a round vs. single loading (which would surely slow me down, I'm not an experienced shotgun shooter, even though I've seen it done on film at remarkable speed). I've shot skeet once, two rounds, broke one target; hopefully I'll do better at trap with all the targets going more or less away from me and no doubles to worry about.
Edit: Okay, found a good page on trap, single loading only unless shooting doubles (I won't be doing that until I can hit 20+ in a round of singles, though I might try wobble trap sooner). I need to get one of those from-the-box pouches, then...
And just realized I'd been conflating members' trap practice with open-to-public skeet shoot days -- I'll be shooting skeet, not trap. Best get my shucking up to speed...

Everything a serious shooter does has a purpose. When you call "pull" you have to move your mouth which could disrupt your sight picture, especially when you cheek the gun hard like me. It also serves the purpose of providing a uniform noise to the mic.
You really need to get a video of C. Floyd shooting doubles on here. Now that is fun to watch!
A call is a personal thing. At the start of the video, guy on Post 1 (post most left) yells Keeeeahhh!, I'm next to him and yell Ahhhhhh!, Next to me calls Pull!, Guy on Post 4 is my dad and he's yelled Hoooowwwww! as long as I can remember. The reason I don't call pull is threefold. 1) I don't have to move my mouth and possibly disrupt my sight pattern, 2) It's a uniform noise that trips the machine in a consistent release and 3) Concentration. I don't have to worry about calling "pull"
I'm trying to figure out trap. Is there 5 stations and you get 5 targets per station? What is that stand at each station for?
The little stand at each station? Those are microphones. The machine is voice activated. You yell pull and the machine shoots the clay automatically.
But potentially a problem when using a semi-auto.
Roland Kee I shoot a semi. A Beretta Outlander. No problem. I did put a shell catcher on it though, to not hit the guy next to me and also so I don't have to pick up em up.

***** I think it might not trigger it because I (and most shooters) close the action immediately on the report of the previous shooter. There is a delay after the pull or else the report of the shotguns would launch another bird.
One of the places is about 3 miles away, I'm a member there. All the others are about 30 to 40 minutes away. I'm a member at one of those too. They all are open to the public for trap certain days and times. There's another club near me but it's not open to the public for trap and I can't justify joining another club and I really like the one that's 30 min. away.
in NZ you are able to have a live shell in the breach of your gun(while shooting DTL) (o/u). yes your are right with a semi-auto but unfortunately incorrect with U/O
The game you're viewing is Singles and you are correct, of the three American Trap events, Singles is the easiest in one respect, but the mental aspect of Singles is very challenging. You have to be perfect usually through 200 shots to make a shootoff and then another 200 to win. Hard part about Skeet is shooting smaller gauges. For me, ( I'm not trying to start a war with a bunch of pantyhose wearing Skeet shooters), 12 gauge Skeet is a cake walk. Learn the leads, there's no variables...

I guess i've been doing it wrong, i pull in the ready position muzzle pointing down and when the skeet goes flying off then i aim and fire. but i guess you aim in the area before the skeet fly's off?
You'll want to start with your muzzle in a position that allows you to make a smooth, efficient move to the target.
