- Why can't this just SOUND GOOD? I set the mic up & it doesn't sound how I want. Here's a new approach that will take the guess work out of recording yourself.

Many thanks to @jacksonwarddrummer for the awesome drum recording!
About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!
This is not needed, Glenn! If you cup the microphone, you are always at the same distance from the mic. No fancy mics needed. #sarcasm
Also a good way to get a free shoe, mic stand or brick (thrown at you by the engineer )
I would love to see someone cupping a U87 in the studio haha
@@duranjerome I'm sure its been done, there isn't anything stupid that humans haven't already done already with the technology available a the time.
It wasn't the microphone glenn! it was the authentic PRS tonewood, duh! ;)
I mean everyone knows my Ibanez Rg with Emg's sound good cause it's Ash and Rosewood.👍
It's gotta be the shoes.
@@denverrandy7143 Maybe maybe not, but i guarantee the ash and rose resonate far better than plywood for example. So im sure it feels more alive and responsive in your hands. Isn't that important too? Im sure that the inspiration you get from having a good quality instrument comes through in your tone! And id be willing to bet that you think it LOOKS awsome as well, and you cant hear that in the mix either. Or can you? There are a ton of important aspects about a guitar that you might not hear on the record, but it doesn't make them less important. Your time in the studio can only be measured in hours, but you'll have that guitar you love for decades! I look at my guitars hanging on the wall, not only as a tool for making music, but also as beautiful works of art. I think they are all beautiful but the ones with the rare woods and stunning finishes call to me and make me want to play them. That equals practice! Can you hear practice time in your tone? I would argue that practice is one of the most important parts of any tone. Stevie Ray could rip your head off playing an old Harmony through a Gorilla. A newbie playing a Private Stock through a Dumble still sounds like a newb!
@@stevenpipes1555 🍿
That guitar would’ve sounded soooo much better if had the authentic PRS tuners that are optimized for maximum tone.
Great inputs and great video as always, Glenn 💚
you guys should give him another free Mic for his Niece! ;)
One thing we want to clarify: RAY sends a laser out (in the infrared-invisible) and measures time based on its reflection. Thus, it does not need any outside light or anything else.
I actually have a real world use for something like this. Not as a guitar mic, but as a vocal mic on stage specifically for backing vocals. My former guitar teacher Joel Hoekstra uses a different but similar version of something like this where his backing vocal mic only activates when he's in front of it during Whitesnake shows. He gave me the original idea and it is really useful with my current gig working as a hired guy for a pop singer. The gain compensation could be really useful in that situation. Or a complete nightmare for the sound guy... Not sure on that one yet but damn it i say we test it and make him earn that meager pitence of a paycheck!!! And yes i realize the irony of a hired musician in pop music talking on a metal channel. Love metal, but my pop gig is consistent. Consistently decent pay and a very tightly run professional operation where the bass player is not trying to figure out how to bum enough money off his friends to drive his mom's mini van to practice or shows
Sounds like a sweet gig. If you ever need a sub, I’d learn some pop tunes. Been in a Journey and an Eagles tribute for several years now. I can definitely cover some BGV’s and guitar on pop songs.
That's a good idea.
I want this mic, and you just gave me ANOTHER reason why.
Yeah it may feedback. I usually have to step back or pull the mic when I am singing louder parts, this mic does it for you.
Indeed! this tech will also be so practical for a 58 style dynamic!
Also, Hoekstra kicks ass :)
Dude! This mic is a game changer. I too have spent a lot of time removing background noise and changing the levels of voiceovers by hand. I imagine my video production, voiceover work, and audio book readings will be so much easier to produce with such a great tool. \m/
Wow,your editor is kicking butt Glenn.👍 Awesome song and mix!!!
That may be the best snare sound I’ve ever got!
Absolutely. Everything is on point!
@@LEWITT-audioguitars are to low and the bass guitar is overpowering the kick drum
@@SpectreSoundStudios Was awesome
@@Durkhead It's almost like they wanted to lower those two instruments in order to hear the drums better. But maybe I am thinking too much in to it. Just my two cents.
I hope you enjoyed your spelling lesson for the day, genius.
You're absolutely right, "sit closer to/in front of recording device" is indeed rocket science.
I needed new technology to compensate for my own stupidity.
That is pretty incredible…even with the wee anomalies. Thank you so much for demoing this. Great video btw 🏴
Great product!! Thanks for sharing this information with us Glenn. Great job!
The new guys are TIGHT! Hats off to anyone that takes the time to practise!
A mic like this is excellent for creative experimentation, and cuts down time compensating for the technicalities (when it works). Also very cool for podcasters when you don't have budget for an engineer to monitor everything. Definitely worth a shot!
We are looking forward to see where people will take the AURA Technology creatively. But yeah, consistent sound quality made easy was the idea.
When you first started explaining the mic, the first thing that popped in my head was an optogate, then you demonstrated the mute function and that’s when I realized it had to be an influence
i thought i was the worst thing to ever happen to recording. very interesting mic. 🍻
😅
Having Glenn as my uncle would be the coolest thing ever
that has some really amazing features!! very useful.. no matter what you record!
This is pretty nuts! So nuts that like 4 videos on my feed were of this mic 😂. Good on them for marketing it and developing innovative tech into mics pushing the industry forward!
3 things:
1. I was a little bit skeptical in the beginning of this video until you mentioned that the infrared sensor can be turned on and off. That’s a HUGE plus if you are gonna be close miking and doing voice over.
2. Did your editor get a pay raise? The production of this video is INSANELY GOOD
3. Can we get a playlist of songs that you’ve used in your mixes in a lot of your videos?
Always great videos Glenn! Although I am curious, is there online collection of your photography anywhere?
That track is sick. It reminds me of Lazarus A.D. Great work as always Glenn!
seems like a great idea for streamers so they can sound consistent all stream without having to worry about staying in just the right spot behind their mic.
That's a killer price for what it brings to the table.
Great video Glenn! I totally agree on adding the gain balancing to the 640 REX - trying to dial that balance in was a deal-breaker for me with that microphone
FU and your microphone tips Glen.
Back in the day we put a fkin cassette recorder in the middle of our rehearsal room and the recording was AWESOME!
Well at least if you knew the songs. And weren't older than 14.
Oh god, i loved the old video style....it was calming, even if you were screaming...now i am gettin A LOT OF PHYSICAL PAIN by just watching....not my style of editing a video :-D
Glen, first of all, thanks as usual. Could you eventually please make a video with some tips for specifically small spaces to be used as home studios for amateurs? Such as speaker sizes. Where to place panels. Etc. Places that measures 105x92 inches, those ballparks. Thanks!!
Ok, great suggestion! I’ll try to get something happening. It may take a while though!!
Now this is how you test a product. I'm impressed 💯
Pretty cool mic. I use one of my studio mics for gaming. Something I converted to when I was too lazy to replace my old gaming headset. This mic would be perfect for that, as well. No more push to talk, lol.
Dude, just so your niece could get a new gaming system from her Uncle Glen is in itself completely worth people subscribing!!! Awesome. One quick thing I wanted to say though, when you did the whole thing where you adjusted the cutoff point and pulled away from the mic to make it mute (at 8:20), it didn't actually cut off/mute completely... I still heard you say "It shuts off", though extremely faint. May not matter at all to you, but just wanted to say it's not completely muted... NOT to take away how cool that mic is. I too hope they develop it further, I would definitely get one.
You're studio looks really up to date Glenn very nice, wish I could do some recording here, peace man🎶🎵🎸✌️
Sounds great on the cab. Not so much for your standard recording set up. It was always just a little to hot for my ears. It was almost on the verge of distorting.
And honestly a podcast set up 101 might be a good idea. A common thing I always see with first timers after spending way to much on an SM7. Great mic but if you are starting out there are so many options that will get you the same results for a lot less money. The 57, the 58, even the 55 the list goes on and on.
Anyway after spending money on a mic they don't really need. First timers 9 times out 10 sit way to close, turn the gain up to high, and don't even use a wind sock let alone a pop filter.
Wow, it picks up every squeak and creak of the chair with the gain compensation. It's an interesting feature, but I'll stick to my intentionally directional mic.
Mexican Iron Man, who is totally NOT a youtuber (or is he? 😏), could use one of these, as he wildly moves about and away from the mic, causing half of his rants to become inaudible. And he does that quite a lot every time Disney does a f*** up. Which is pretty much all the time these days.
man, i'm really starting to love lewit's stuff. they keep innovating and creating cool new ideas vs "yeah lets use this mic from the 60s and 70s"
super super cool stuff, once i have a bit more income i'll probably be investing in some
Love this channel
Great video, Glenn!
I just bought a lct 240 should have waited a few days and got one of these. Im mostly going to use the lewitt to record my friends from highschool that think they are rappers now, the ray would help a lot with that
I need one of these for vocals. STILL can't get a good recording of electric guitars with a condenser mic though. Took me a while to realize everyone who reviews equipmentbis always running an amp or a microphone through a bunch of other stuff instead of just an honest raw demo of the amp or mic...pissed me off for a while because I couldn't get the same sounds, & realized they're running it into other equipment. It's just good i didn't waste TOO MUCH money before I realized that. 😂 But i could definitely use this for vocals.
I've not had any trouble recording electric guitars with a condenser mic. Used an AT4040 here with zero eq:
ua-cam.com/video/hYn7jeWdbrs/v-deo.html
@spectresoundstudios if that mic uses infrared for the proximity, what’s the use of lighting the subject? The infrared does that for you
Yeah, devices can see infra red, we can't. If we could, Betelgeuse would be the brightest star in the sky.
If you only want to have the "proximity gate" functionality you can add this to basically any microphone using an optogate. But cool thing to see this tech integrated into a mic.
I'm sold.
I don't even have desire to create content.
Glenn I must say your mixes have DRASTICALLY improved in sound in the last few months, I honestly didn’t like them a lot before but now it seems like you nail everything and the mixes sound like something I would actually like an album to sound like.
Thank you very much! It’s a “constant improvement” thing for me. That & Mr. Neve was a big help!!!
@@SpectreSoundStudios I love how you always take the time to read and reply to so many comments 😄
Interesting mic! I was thinking, from my own experience, this mic could easily become your general video overhead mic, just because the autogain will make for much more seamless edits, audio-wise. Editing is going to make your image jump around the screen (even if just a little) but getting the audio levels the same between cuts isn't necessarily instant and easy, and fussing about making it "sound the same / right" isn't necessarily the best use of your time.
I had a $170 rewards certificate from Guitar Center that expired in two days. I had been looking just for something to blow it on for about a week.
This video came into my feed last night and I just pre-ordered the RAY a minute ago for slightly under $200 after tax after using the cert instead of what would have been $349 + tax. This is something that will genuinely get a ton of use too so the purchase was well worth it. I now feel like I got something valuable that I'm happy about instead of just going "I have to use this now or lose it" and buying something random.
That's some killer timing. Thanks Glenn!!!
Cool idea. Like you I don't like the proximity effect compensation, but the price. I was expecting something over 500. I used to own vocal mics that cost orders of magnitude more and their biggest feature was selectable polar patterns.
8:15 holy fuck Glenn!!! No more editing hiss and the gurgling noise of the fishtank filter out of tracks!!!!! WOW!!!
For $349 US, that is some really impressive technology. THAT is worth saving up for.
Wow, 8 years ago. Just watched her reaction, reminds me of seeing that for the first time.
Could it be that the closer you get the tighter the inferred beam is and it’s going through the grill cloth?
Thank you for the test. Just saw this advertised today and proximity effect was the first thing I thought of. This does look like a game changer for not too bad a price.
Knowing the bass increase with proximity effect, its essentially like the doppler effect of louder higher pitch mass moving (Like a race car) passing to quieter to lower pitch. Seem kinda similar
I saw videos for the RAY on UA-cam but this is the only one I've watched, and I'm here because I always watch. I didn't know it was about the RAY LOL
Where I can record, I would never be far away from the mic, but I wonder how good that mic is at ignoring noise from the street.
It would be cool if they culd do this for drum mics do that for Gateing and stopping bleed
I am interested in a new mic for that kind of casual vocal recording, so I'm totally the audience for this. I have an Aston Stealth and I recognize it's a great mic, but the size and weight are quite impractical. Though it still sounds a little early days for this new tech, so I'm still more tempted to the 440 pure at the moment, just to keep the budget low. Though I'm not sure what I need to know to know whether it's the mic for me.
Very interesting mic! The guitarist and drummer were nailing it
One more thing beyond proximity effect and doppler effect being similar, maybe you could show us your full mic collection in an episode!!!????
I actual kind of like that about the changing of the sound with the microphone what you mentioned as the problem with micrphones Glenn.
Then I can use the microphone as an instrument too. I like to use the SM58 Beta for main vocals but micrphone's are a personal feeling thing imo.
But i think its a nice micrphone for instruments because it saves time in mixing !! I have to much so i dont need it hahah but its pretty cool ..
Jw have you ever used the rode ntg3?
If anything turned me onto Lewitt mics this is the one! This is defintely way beyond a gimmick, I'd really like to get one for myself one day :)
I'd also like to see that on drum mics aswell! The 640 Rex will be cool with this but what abou hi hat or tom mics? Will this tech help it be more flexable setup wise and keep the bellyeaching skinbeater quiet? Will the auto mute thing help with bleed?
As a voice director and audio engineer working mostly on animation projects, this could be a fantastic application for recording kids, who are notoriously more difficult to keep on mic as they usually haven’t developed much technique yet. As long as it’s broadcast quality I’d definitely like to try it.
GGGLLLEEEEEEEEEEEENNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!! So I bought it and tried it and it was shite unfortunately. Maybe I got a dud one but I'm sending it back tomorrow for a refund. I'm admittedly being slightly harsh as it kind of works but nowhere near as well as I'd need it to. I tried backing off the mic slowly to around 3 feet (at the same time as using a 2nd regular condenser mic in parallel) and it didn't really do anything to compensate, then the gain just jumped up when I moved back slightly further. No good. Also, the low cut when you're up close is way too much. Could be okay on a female vocal but not a deeper voice. Hopefully they'll develop it further as I think it's a great concept but for now I'm out I'm afraid...
7:17 that solo was filthy!
Back to the Lita Ford pose in the thumbnail...
I want it. Also holy shizzle, the editing was on another level. Almost in zoomer territory here 😂
Not sure if you've made this in the past, but it would be awesome to see a video about the different phase styles on EQs... Like linear vs natural vs zero latency and whatnot...
I actually think the worst thing to happen to recording is the use of studio headphones. My band is getting ready to record,…our drummer is a trained engineer and has a studio in his basement…so last night we practiced in headphones to start getting our mix and our levels and getting used to playing that way. And the entire time, I was second-guessing the sound of my guitar. We didn’t actually record…but I noticed all sorts of differences in the blend of my effects and the EQ of my guitar compared to how they normally sound. And I was thinking “which one is it gonna be on the recording???” Any tips on how to prevent this from happening?
I really like my lewit 440 ..I mix it with a nasty slutt microphone and got the guitar tone from the new suffocation record....so saturated......took me 5 months to get that sound
Noticed that when you gestured toward the mic, the frequency content changed. Also it didn't do much for the room ambience with distance, could use reverb removal.
But what tonewood is used for that mic? 😲
Not so sure about needing to light the subject. IR is not visible light. It's shooting infrared light out and it's bouncing back at its sensor. It should work in total darkness.
Definitely gonna consider this mic if I can get my voice acting career started
About the demo-mix... Maybe it's just me and my tastes, but I somehow wanted to hear a tad more click to the kick drum. I want it to rip my face off/hit me in the chest... ;)
I'd like to know more about different approaches how to get that face melting click when mixing and recording kick drum... maybe a video idea?
But awesome video once again!
Do it with Lewitt!
Its lookin at ya!
Wow the mic thing was awesome, killing the drop.
Oh thank god. It’s authentic prs tone wood. I was starting to worry.
That’s a really cool mic!
It's not the speaker Glenn! It's the tone foam ON the mic!
As someone whos playing an instrument and singing will this allow you to move around a little instead of the one good spot ?????
Your voice instantly got brighter @ 2:36 :) actually little bit too much brightness but, nonetheless, this mic sounds excellent.
Wrongo Boyo! My Lewitt 240 Pro came with diddly squat. No shock mount, just a decent mic clip and a foam spit catcher. Oh yeah. And a rubber bracelet. Does anybody still wear these? It was cheap though. And yes, it sounds effing amazing!
That's a whole lot of video effects. Damn!
Mmmmmm…. That authentic PRS tone wood! You can really hear the PR. I think the S always sounds more like $$$$ though.
I bet if the colour was changed to Red it would work even better. Seriously though, this looks amazing, so much so I have changed what the next piece of kit I am saving for.
That's cool if you're moving around unboxing and whatnot.
i lost the count of how many times i went "that's nuts!" during this video
You must play drums. Those dumbasses can't count anything!
@@SpectreSoundStudios BAHAHAHA nah, i just use extinction level event 😉
A LED lamp is needed to make IR readings possible? Which LED lamp has 1100nm light?
100% keep it as your monolog mic. Instant bump in gain and it chased you. Your "red level" was constant.
*reads title*
Glenn is reviewing my mixes?...
I'm still sold on Schure 🎤
I am a cork sniffing, tone snob, extraordinaire. I never considered the color of the grill cloth...
..... I must explore this.
Glenn this is all above my head. I hold a piece of wood with 6 strings on it. I don't make the sound pretty, i just make the sound.
Confirmation glen I'd the big bad evil guy, he has a monolog mic.
So every time you yell F@#$ from wherever you are at the desk you will never need to adjust the level?
Awesome (LOL)
Nice work Glenn, producing audiobooks with loads of hours just holding my head in the same position so the listener get´s the most homogenous sound experience is a pain in the neck...like exactly there, in the neck. Will sell some gear and then jump to your Thomann affiliate link. Anyone need a Rode NT1-A ?...got one for sale ;-) Great content, keep doing the good job.
That little tonewood joke got me thinking. Do strings make a big difference in tone in a full mix? I'm not talking about old/new strings, I mean would we expect any real noticeable difference between say, Elixir Nanowebs and Elixir Optiwebs? Sorry if it's a stupid question! Love the content as always.
In a full mix, I'd say most likely nothing discernable but I haven't tested
It'll be cool to see SMG do some things other than metal. I love metal but I like other music too.
This is making me wonder about the likes of a power metal vocalist that's hitting the high notes very loudly. I think it might not make a difference because it seems distance-based. Then again, if the vocalist backs away from the mic when the vocalist goes high, could it backfire?
I think you really need to make more of a noise about the mute function on this mic (no pun intended), trying to edit and cut out background noise from vocal tracks is about as much fun as listening to paint dry. This would not only spare you the tedium of trying to get a noise gate to cut the background noise but not affect the vocal dynamics but also give you the quality of the Lewitt 440 Pure which in my opinion, for the money, is the best mic out there.
Keep up the great work mate, oh and fuck you Glenn!!
The mic needs light ? But then the band members see each other and start screaming from pain. there is no light in the vampire cave normal.
HOLY SHIT THAT DRUM MIX!! 🔥
Can you tell me if you think KK's priest's album sermons of the sinner sounds good or bad? In my ears i never heard worse. Especially the song brothers of the road. The whole album lacks bass, and the snare sounds so bad. They have a live version on yt from bloodstock 2023, and it sounds amazing! How can such good music sound so bad on an album☹️
Hey!!! Isn’t she the one who did the voice on SMT episode 24 back in 2020? That rapper girl who wanted the engineer to pay a fee to work with her? (See? Huge fan of that show. Another episode maybe?)
