Pete Fountain was arguably among the TOP echelon of Jazz clarinetists and was my idol when I was 14 and learning the instrument. I wanted to play the clarinet just like Pete.
I’m 73 now and so far, the only thing I’ve managed is to replicate the haircut he sported in his ‘senior’ years.
When I was that young kid, I even saved my dough and bought a crystal mouthpiece……….and dropped it within a week of bringing it home. Broke the tip and rendered it unplayable. I was crushed and never bought another.
But I still play, still love the instrument and still marvel at Pete’s mastery.

@@PotomacTraps You’re absolutely correct, Joel. I practice every day, often for 3 hours, sometime more. And I’m getting better! Likely because I’m more patient than I was as a snot-nosed kid.
But I don’t memorize songs like I once did, and I have some arthritis issues plus COPD. The joys of aging/.
      But I ain’t quittin’!!
You comment ‘there’s still time’ reminded me of the Artie Shaw documentary ‘Time Is All You’ve Got’. Worth watching, for sure.
      Best regards from Toronto!

      Dres,
I made one or two minor adjustments, but here it is:

at about 1:48 a squeak goof....makes me feel better that I'm not the only clarinetist that it happens to....one thing with the clarinet is its very hard to control that mouthpiece and reed ...while playing a very hard song. I did it one time in front of 6000 people, and that is all they remember....Pete plays a very saxy type of sound so its very hard ...one time on the Johnny Carson it happened again, but because Pete was so talented its not remembered....he is still a one of a kind....we all miss you Pete.

I know the exact time on Carson you are talking about, but that appearance was so damn powerful no one cared it went by in a micro-second (good ear) I think that Carson appearance was one of his best - let’s not forget that Doc’s band is super kick-ass in its own right - that certainly helps too. Fountain was incredible.
