- Johnny Carson on snare drum with Jack Sperling, Bobby Rosengarden, Godfrey Hirsch and the whole Tonight Show band accompanying Pete as they burn up a version of "Marching 'Round the Mountain" creating a spirited second line feel. The Tonight Show, April 22, 1964. Tommy Newsom behind Pete.
This was when there was real talent and real entertainment. How I miss these people.
You mean you don't like Billy Eilish?
How can you NOT DIG THIS...Pete Fountain is enjoying every second and so is everyone else. It is a Classic! They really swing do they not!
He was so young here.
And he was a usual Guest for decades -- Carson loved his talent.
What a clarinet player pete fountain was . Everyone played well on this
He sounds like the late Irving Fazola
What a show, Johnny kept up with the rest. No where is the talent like this today. Just political animals.
Wonderful. The drums are playing with a real, legit, "street beat" feel that's at the heart of authentic New Orleans jazz; playing right on the drum heads with the snares turned on. The way it oughtta be.
GOOD drummers that are really drummers first and foremost know this. All the others don't.
Tommy Newsome in the background...WOW ... he's been with Johnny a long time.
I thought Tommy and one of bone players were the only players from the start of the show who stayed with Johnny until the end? I may be wrong….
@@JetFuelnSawDust Doc Severinsen joined NBC in 1949 and was on the Tonight Show with Steve Allen. He left in 1957 but came back in 1962 not long after Carson took over. Ed Shaughnessy joined the band in 1963. From what I read, it looks like much of the band stayed with JC for 30 years, and many of them commuted to Las Vegas daily or just on the weekends to play gigs there.
Tommy Newsom looked the same all his life.
Is that Tommy Newsome on tenor?
Look how young Tommy Newsome was. This was before Doc’s time. There all gone now, But how FANTASTIC is it to still be able to watch it today.
Before Doc's time as leader, yes, but not before his time in the band. Doc was part of the Tonight Show band in the 50s when Steve Allen hosted the show. Skitch Henderson was the leader until 1966.
@@ApartmentKing66 Not all of them are gone...Doc's still blowing.
@@NeilTruick I'm not the one who said they're all gone, the original poster did. Doc's in his 90s now and, as you said, still blowing strong.
You can see Doc in the back, when they show all the drummers, playing his trumpet.
Pete was my cousin but I never got to meet him 😥 I do have some of his albums, but this was a nice find! Thanks for posting! 🍻
I used to watch Pete Fountain the Tonight Show in the 70s when I was an aspiring clarinet player in the elementary school band. I knew I would never be that good, but what an inspiration.
I notice as a drummer...that drummers have the best time Swinging to great music...happy, smiling, swinging, head bobbing...
Pete Fountain was THE clarinet player of the TV age (I remember the bald Pete and he moves his neck like a chicken) - he was everywhere. And seeing Jack Sperling in his senior years was awesome.
When he had just started shaving his head I was on the New Orleans Police Department and had just started shaving mine also. It was Mardi Gras and as Pete and his group, The Half Fast Marching Band, came down the street with Pete's bald head leading the group I stepped out in front of them and took of my helmet revealing mine. Pete's reaction was to run up to me and kiss me on top of my head. What a thrill.
My dads favorite show
Rip everyone
that's cookin' with gas man
That was better than great. I cant thank you enough for posting it.
I love this stuff! Thank you Pete for ALL The Great memories!!!
Pete is the master great tone
Any rare posting of the great Jack Sperling is a gem. Thanks, John!
This was way better than that rap crap heard on Jimmy Fallon's Tonight Show!
Careful...times and tastes change. Most of the folks your parents' age probably thought this was crap at the time.
I appreciate this rendition of "She'll Be Coming Round the Mountain" that we used to sing in school as a folk song when I was a kid. The title "Marching Round the Mountain" is new to me.
Johnny Carson was a great drummer & a fabulous magician at that, he started off his career as a magician back in the early 1950's MAY HE R.I.P. GOD BLESS HIS SOUL AMEN. 😇😇😇😇🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Thanks John for posting this super great video. Much appreciate everything you do for all drummers. We need more people like you in this world who share great video clips of legends., Once again we are grateful to have you. Thanks John Titsworth. BOOM
Johnny Carson had the winning formula right from the beginning. "From New York, 'The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson..." became "From Hollywood...and now here's Johnny!" This was entertainment, America's Town Hall convened every weeknight during the famous "Monologue."
And the best thing about it was….no politics at all!
@@ShelleyVideo Johnny made plenty of political jokes. Back in the 60s he would joke about how poorly run NYC was a lot. Mayor Lindsay was the brunt of many monologue jokes.
Johnny used to have Louie Bellson & Buddy on all of the time. He should've added Jack Sperling to that list.
As rare as finding this piece from the tonight show is finding Johnny Carson playing the drums on his show
Pete Fountain what a musician!!
This whole show supposedly exists; the monologue was posted on here, the Jake Erlicht segment is on UA-cam from a color videotape source. Would love to see it start to finish.
0:44 - Poor Johnny, with the tobacco drug which KILLED him!
I completely loved this. I sure would love to see and hear more of Pete Fountain from the old Carson shows if possible. Johnny playing on drums was an added plus. Thanks for posting.
Who's the older guy playing tthe drums, Chrustchev?
I've seen a lot of Pete's stuff on here, but not this. Thank you John Titsworth for the post.
That was amazing. Thank you for posting.
Spectacular, all of it. Thanks for posting.
I believe that's Bernie Glow and Doc Severinsen back in the trumpet section.
Clark Terry as well
@@richardsalvucci3472 Yes! And Snooky Young! Now that was a trumpet section!
I'm so glad my folks played Pete Fountain when I was growing up. I'm 71 now and it still gives me such joy to hear him play ❤
Would love to find the appearances on the Tonight Show of the Harry James band with Buddy Rich from 1965 or James with Louis Bellson in 1966.
This particular show with Pete Fountain was preserved on kinescope/16mm film sent to the troops in Germany in the 60s. It was unearthed a few years ago. And yes wouldn't it be great it the same would happen to the Harry James appearances in '65 & '66.
@@luvnglife This is a good clip, and I do appreciate it. But why is the color gone? It's disappointing that the color isn't there...
Oh, man, Louie Bellson is THE best drummer ever, to me! 👍
@@luvnglife can you upload the whole show? I'm sure johnny carson fans would appreciate it! Someone was kind enough to post a whole 1969 tonight show. Show! And fan can finally see it! Show do you mind posting the while of this particular show?
I think that's Tommy Newsom on tenor sax behind Pete.
Do you have the full episode of Austin City Limits from 1982? Featuring Pete Fountain and the Jazzmanian Devil.
Ok, I was only three years old, but I still love this! Especially from NYC.
Is that Tommy Newsome behind Pete Fountain?
Yes
Johnny Carson plays DRUM.
The day before I was born..as if anyone cares
Dec 7, 1964 for me
Aw! 🙂
se los juro que me hubiera gustado nacer en esos años hermoso , hermosa música y que extraordinario clarinetista, soy músico y amor este tipo de música
BadAss,,,,New Orleans Boy
Leon Redbone and Pete Fountaine were and are two of COCO-NANDY'S biggest heroes. He only wishes that he could have met them.
johnny had some pretty good back up there man. ''like cool dadio''. lol.
Fantastic
Doc Severinsen is the trumpeter with the mustache, right?
Yeah, looks like him.
Pete Fountain could have been cast as a villain on Columbo.
I remember seeing the "brought to you in living color" and having black and white tv...
Wonderful Jack.. so few sightings.... thanks for post.
I wish the tonight show with Louis Armstrong was available
Scrolling quickly through youtube and went "wait, is that Hitler playing the clarinet?"
No just Mussolini
Johnny Carson plays drum.
If you have that entire program, a rarity, please send it up. RCA erased all of the tapes or reused them so few if any of the first ten years of the Carson Show exist.
Why do some drummers look like they are having so much fun?
This is only yesterday. What has happened?
Jerry Lee Lewis brought me here, he's parked out back in the bushes.
my mom used to let me stay up to watch the Tonight Show, what talent he had on❤
Kinescope?
Really amazing time capsule stuff.
I can't watch this without thinking of the moronic NBC bean counter that went ahead and erased the tapes of Carson's New York era.
Drums too loud!
Believe it or not, I'm Pete Fountain's fourth cousin!! I play trumpet but I want to strive to be at his level one day!:)
I played with Pete on stage a number of time in NO and Bay St. Louis. Pete gave me much over 40 years....incl double case and 2 clarinets.......one of which recorded a number of Coral records. I use to play on it sometimes with Pete.....I recog. the serial no. when he gave it to me......cheers. I miss Pete everyday.........
opps! Vivienne is girlfriend name....lol. My name is Greg Harrison and I also wrote the article in December issue of The Clarinet Mag. "THE STYLE AND SOUND OF PETE FOUNTAIN". Pete's pic is on the front cover!! This was publi. in honor of Pete after he died Aug. 2016. Greg not Viv.....Hi Benny!
Why so many drummers?
Супер !
There ya go !!
Alguém sabe que boquilha pete jogava na sua clarinet???
I think the white-haired drummer is Paul Edwards and Sperling is playing his Rogers kit.
The white-haired drummer is Godfrey Hirsch. Godfrey's first instrument was the vibes, but he doubled on snare for struttin' kind of numbers.
Thank you for sharing this. Pete appeared many times.Where are all those clips? There is supposed to be a cd box set of Pete with Lawrence Welk. Any for sale?
dinkorub I'd have to look at the logs from the Burbank era (1972-92) of Carson's "Tonight" re: Fountain's guest shots, but with the exception of kinescopes like this and super rare original color videotape, all of Carson's New York years (1962-72) were wiped by NBC without Carson's knowledge. I was quite tickled to discover this kinescope clip.
dinkorub I forgot to say in my other reply, but the album "Lawrence Welk Presents Pete Fountain" is available digitally, and used copies of the vinyl record are for sale on Amazon and elsewhere. I'm not certain about a box set.
Yeah, the great Pete was with Welk from 1955 until December 1959. Pete walked out on Welk because he wanted to jive up a Christmas carol, and Welk wouldn't hear of it. As a sidenote, he also lost Alice Lon the Champagne Lady for showing "too much knee" on camera, telling her that "cheesecake does not fit our show." Lon responded by saying "all I did was sit on a desk and cross my legs! That's how a lady sits down!" Enough irate viewer mail persuaded Welk to try to coax Lon back, but her decision was made.
Mestre pete
From New York
Wow !!! 👌
They got the band together and bent the gig out of shape
Especially when you hear Pete's album version:
ua-cam.com/video/saJOf2c-o5Y/v-deo.html
amazing
The BEST!!!!!!
Johnny is playing right handed. I thought he was a lefty
A lot of lefties play righty. In my case, my first drum teacher was an elementary school band director who didn’t know the drums well enough to know that lefties set up differently than righties. I learned how to play like all the other righties in the class. Ringo Starr is a lefty who plays righty, and there are many.
Beautiful!
Press F to pay respects 😔
Where was Ed Shaugnessy?
Playing gigs
Wow!

Just curious if Tommy Newsome was with the show from the very beginning. I'm pretty sure Doc was. I don't remember why Skitch Henderson left or how many years into the show it happened. Ed McMahon's intro with heeeers Johnny got noticeably longer over the years. Wish the very first episode existed. I have heard an audio portion of the very first monologue. It was played once on an anniversary show.
Skitch left in 1966, wanted to stay in New York while the show was moving to California.
@@markbuckley8675 No, according to the Carson Podcast, Skitch got a bit too flirtatious with the daughter (or niece, I don't remember which) of an RCA bigwig who in turn told Johnny to get rid of him...or else.
John how much are Dolly Parton's worth?
It should read "Johnny Carson plays Snare Drum..."
that cat looks like hot-lips hannigan from the flintstones.
His video came onto my homepage, and I thought the exact same thing
I didn't know Carson could play the sticks.
