At night, when he sleeps, try to suck him without him feeling you, and keep all the venom you extract in a small bottle without him knowing, and when he stings you deeply, deeply and you feel that you are left without breathing, don't panic because you have the antidote.😉

11:34 Roma people are nomad people and they traveled everywhere, not only to Romania. Ceausescu did not bring Punjabi people to work in factories. We would have known because most probably they would have lived among us. Roma people are recognized as a nomad minority even in India. They are not discriminated against because they were slaves. Many Romanians were slaves as well, usually the peasants who were very poor, at a time when slavery was everywhere in the world. They built their own parallel society because that's their culture, not because they were discriminated against. Agree that education is the key, but that's something that is not appreciated in their culture. I remember years ago reading in the news about children of wealthy Roma families who committed suicide because their parents no longer allowed them to go to school at the age of 12 and forced them to get married. There was a genocide of Roma people, not only Jews, by the Nazi regime, but you don't hear about that. Why? Because the lack of education does not allow them to have a voice. Of course, there are more educated Roma people nowadays but their culture is still the same.

I appreciate your podcast. I am romanian, born and raised in Bucharest for 30 years and studied dentistry there. As a female I always felt safe at night times in the city and close by suburbs except in the ‘90. Many people were very poor back then and would steal, huge inflation, factories being closed and families losing one or both jobs; first wave of people left Romania in ‘90 then after entering EU in 2007
I now live in New Zealand for 3 years, so watching your videos with great pleasure

I think the racism against roma people is strongly related to the image other countries have of their culture. Since being roma is considered as something extremely negative and since outsiders generalize and think romanians are roma, there is this overall frustration and necessity romanians feel to dissociate from that culture that isn't theirs at all and with which they do not relate in the slightest. Unfortunately, the image of romanians is "stained" by the bad examples from the roma communities that move to other countries and conduct themselves in a manner that isn't civilized in the eyes of our society's standards. The incapacity of foreigners to distinguish this 3% from the 97%, the constant "putting everyone in the same bag" mentality, harms the romanian people and sometimes puts them in positions that force them to be defensive and therefore hateful towards roma people.

Couldn't have said it any better .. Spot on! I would also add the fact that the level of safety in our country oddly improved once the roma people started moving out to economically stronger countries.
Before joining EU we were shamed for not providing better life conditions for our roma minority(when in fact they were provided with more than the actual romanians).. And the loudest nation on this topic was France... Well, as soon as Romania joined EU, the first ones to break the borders were the roma people and now all of a sudden the countries that were bad mouthing us for not taking proper care of our roma minority had to deal with the issue themselves...(oopsie😈) integrating them and educating them(which we have tried doing). I need to mention that there are many roma individuals that are highly educated and stand up citizens within our country but unfortunately the majority chooses to stick to their own parallel belief system and lifestyle which is not appropriate within our societal values.
So yes, we do get frustrated when we are being portrayed as the thieves of society when in fact we are not... And that is why we NEED to dissociate from them.. i wouldn't call that being a racist but it's definetely the gateway attitude towards becoming one.
There is so much to talk about on this subject but that would be a topic for a podcast on its own.
You need an old enough person that had to grow in times where you were indeed afraid of certain gypsies roaming the streets.
There are different categories withing the gypsy community as well and they are not all the same.. I wouldn't want to be prejudiced towards them the same way Romanians are being prejudiced against within Europe. I blame the media and it takes people like the "Romaniacs" (peace and blessings be upon you) to shed light on the truth. ✌🏻❤️🇷🇴🐺🗻🦅

Regarding children and the fact that many romanians only have a single child - this is not due to communism, it's actually because more and more people have become socially aware and financially educated so they weigh the decision of having 1 or more children very carefully. The cost of living compared to income is pretty high, so a child adds more financial stress. And before the christian fanatics jump on me, this is just an objective and factual observation, not just my oppinion.

the Romanian vs rroma thing, although correct in some parts, the current situation is not because we chose to separate them from our life. Actually, it's quite the contrary .... rroma people have free slots in schools, higher education created specially for them, more job opportunities and more, in an effort to integrate them into our society (i would not want to call it civilized because they are not barbarians) , yet they tend to stick to their traditions, that leading to self seclusion, that leading to less jobs (you need an actual social functionality in order to do your role in a society), that leading to more crimes and so on. Some rroma that I personally know that left that tribal mentality hate(although despise is a better term) the way rroma is carrying their lifestyle in these modern ages as well. And there s another thing.. It s not that we re racist, it s that we tend to hate with passion anybody that acts like they own the world, they are better, and degrades others just because ... In Romania, most of people that do this are rroma... but we ll gladly teach humility to a Caucasian if he (or she... because equal rights) acts like any of the before mentioned :) As you guys might noticed, we don t shy away from saying what we think (unfortunately in some cases)...

9:17 Romania was first United in 1600 from the 3 historical Principalities: Wallachia/Romanian Country, Moldova and Transylvania. Wallachia and Moldova united again in 1859 and Transylvania joined them in 1918. Wallachia became a principality in 1290 became independent in 1330 while Moldova became a principality in 1346, 16 years after Wallachia.
Before that, in ancient times the Dacian King Burebista Unified the Dacian tribes under one kingdom in the year 82 BC. The Romans fought the Dacians several times, the first Wars were won by the Dacians but the Romans finally conquered Dacia in 106 AD. In 275 AD the Romans left Dacia because of Invasion from the East. Between 1185 AD to 1280 AD there was a a Wallacho-Bulgarian Empire founded by the Romanian Asen Dynasty ( they might have been Wallachians mixed with the invading Cuman). From 275 to 1185 the Romanians/Wallachs were invaded by different people from the East: the Slavs, the Huns, the Avars, the Turkic tribes like: the Bulgars, the Cumans, the Pechengs, the Magyars ( ancestors of today Hungarians). But there have been been some Wallachian princes in today's Romania region in the 10th century: Gelu, Glad and Menumorut.

Overall a very good and informed video, but there are quite a few mistakes in what you said: Romania was formed in 1859, not 1912. The Roman empire actually conquered Dacia and Dacia was a Roman province for quite some time (Roman Dacia was a province of the Roman Empire from 106 to 271-275 AD, so about 8 generations). Romania was not part of the Soviet Union, like other countries like Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, Lithuania, Estonia, etc, so there was no reason for Romanians to learn Russian, since Russia had no authority in Romania. Romania was just under the "influence" of Russia, let's say, both being communist countries. Romania has the 3rd lowest wage in the EU, not in the "entire Europe" as you said multiple times. So EU has 27 members and Europe has 44 countries, so at least 10-15 countries have lower wages and economies than Romania. Also I have read Bram Stoker's Dracula and it actually specifically says that the Dracula prince lived in a castle nearby Bistrita (which is a city in Transylvania), so it's actually set in Romania. And Bran Castle looks quite similar to the castle described in the book, so the decision was based on that, Bran castle was not randomly chosen to be Dracula's castle.

42:40 That's so wrong! Romania was under russian occupation between 1944 and 1958 when russian language was mainly learnt in schools as a foreign language. Romania was an independent country, it was never a soviet state. They did that to Moldova, which was a soviet state even though the people there spoke Romanian. Moldovans of Romanian origin still speak Romanian (and russian) nowadays.

Thank you for making a better image of this country. If you will be more curious about the history of this country, there are a set of documentary films in english called "History of Romania". There are many Romanians that don't know the actuall history of this country.. Also there are some artistic movies :"Vlad Țepeș " "Mihai Viteazul" that are very good to make a true opinion about this country. Thank you again

  • @irinabuji
    @irinabuji Рік тому

I think you might be referring to Cetatea Poienari as Vlad Țepeș's Castle. There are a lot of dark legends surrounding the castle. One of them is that Vlad Țepeș forced the aristocrats to build the castle on a cliff as a punishment for plotting against him. They worked until they fell to their deaths. This castle, for me, it seems more similar to the one described in the books, as it is isolated and situated high on a cliff. But it is mostly ruins now. Also, I have read Dracula and the count is definetly from Romania, or, more specific Transilvania. A lot of Romanian places are mentioned also: Cluj, Bistrița, Borgo Pass, etc. There are a lot of geographical details which indicates that the Irish author Bram Stoker has chosen Bran as the Dracula's castle. He was never in Romania, but did a lot of research to understand the geography and cultural context of this region.

The reason why people say that Dracula is Romanian is because the action of the book takes place in Transylvania and England, and Bram Stoker was inspired to write the book after visiting Transylvania.
Tepes lived in Poenari castle. And in Romanian mythology or folklore there are creatures that are vampiric such as Moroii.
It's fake that Vlad Tepes was a vampire and that he lived at Bran, but it's true that in Romanian folklore we have creatures like the vampire and that the action of the Dracula book takes place in Romania. Also Romania is rich in folklore and superstitions and it's a good place to feed the imagination and get insired by.

Guys, at least get your dates right. I like your vlogs, but your history "facts" are just pure fiction. Romania got its name after a couple of years of the Union in 1859 of the two principalities of Moldova and Tara Romaneasca (basically "Romanian country"). About the gypsies, aka Roma, or Romales, they were mainly bought on the Ottoman slave market and settled in the medieval principalities as slaves of the ruler or of the church, then also of wealthy boyars. What Ceaușescu did was to bring people from under-developed rural areas in Romania to industrial towns as labour force. He did not bring slaves (!!!), slavery was abolished in the 1800s. Also many Roma were still nomads, they were forcefully settled by the Communists. Just Google up some data before "dispelling" any miths!

And there is no Roman languages, all of them are Romance languages. Ours has more Slavic and Turkish (and other), that's what gives it the specific.

So Bram S didnt just inspire his Dracula from Vlad the Impaler, but also the vampire story. And also the obsession rou people has with garlic, so Romania really is the country or the area where the vampires are coming from, even if just as a local belief or myth😉😉😄

  • @TheUltimateLegend7
    @TheUltimateLegend7 Рік тому

    Just a couple of things...
Romania wasn t united in 1912,but in 1918. Well, to be more exact, in 1859 Țara românească and Moldova were united (forming the "little Romania") and then, in 1918, three more regions were united with it, the last one being Transilvania. So in 1918 the "great Romania" was formed.
Secondly, yes, families from cities only have one or two children, but this was not the case during communism! In fact, Ceaușescu made abortions illegal and gave aid to families with many children. I do not know for sure why families only have one or two children nowadays (perhaps as a response to the communism times?), but this certainly wasn t the case during communism.
Thirdly, Romania actually was part of the Roman Empire for a while. So.... At first there was Dacia (this also has a compicated history, too long to be written in a UA-cam comment), which lost around year 106 the war with the Roman Empire and became part of it until around 270, when the "Aurelian retreat" took place. This is the reason why romaians have both dacic and romanic descent, but more romanic, because after 106, the roman culture, language and blood overtook their dacic counterparts.

The poor families tend to withdraw their kids from school so many will end up doing bad things. The less educated and the poor parts of society started to inherit gypsy cultural "values" because they see in them as thriving by making "easy money".Search for the most valuable UA-cam channels in Romania and you will see a lot of gypsy related stuff( mainly manele singers).

...educating the Roma people???... Do you think you just came up with this idea and Romanian people/authorities didn't think about this until now?! This educating thing is going since the time of the comunism and it has been applied with special opportunities for them in the romanian schools, highschools and universities, with the purpose of including and stimulating them to learn... I think you should look more into this topic. And after all that time, these are the results! Why? Because they resist education, they refuse to adapt to civilisation and modern menthality, and again, I'm talking about some of them, not all.
About the Romanian racism against the Roma people, I would say it is something more like: we know who we are dealing with, what to expect from some of the Roma people (NOT all of them), than racism. Romanians don't think them as inferior people and they don't wish them any harm, we are just aprehensive about their bad behaviour, which we know it can happen, not always, not from all of them, but we have to be ready / guarded. If this attitude is racism, then I don't know what racism is! I'm half Roma, but I was raised as romanian, I have Roma relatives, roma colleagues in school, Roma people friends, but I was burnt by some Roma people in a few ocasions, which confirmed the prejudices against them. There are Roma people and Roma people, like in every ethnic group, some are good some are bad. Unfortunately, the frequency with which we face the bad ones, determines the prejudice attitude.
Sorry, I have allergy to the word "racism" it is too abused and missused lately, the same as "depression"!

the development of the Romanian language has definitely been influenced by its neighbors or occupying forces, but the Italian, Spanish or other Latin languages being descendants of Romanian or it being the oldest is at best a myth, or one of the narratives likely used by nationalistic movements or individuals that can claim anything without any proof whatsoever, aiming to boost the sentiment of pride, which can be then exploited to gain political capital and influence over ignorant people.

Also the origins of Romania that are the Dacia and Roman Empire , Dacians were Arian rase, and over time with occupation from the west and east we are mixed with Indo-European, Slavic etc so every developed country has low birth rate. Has nothing to do with communism, because in communism abortion was illegal. Also in Romania you have 97% Greek Orthodox. In communism everyone was provided with a house and a job, and people were payed well, but people were not allowed to travel al the time and they did not have a lot of things to spend money on, since there was no import and there were only a few products. Romania even managed to be the first and only country to pay it's debt and wanted to be completely self-sufficient.

I am still confuzed about this racism agains gypsies... because I don't think it's accurate at all :)))
So when I moved to the UK there were people asking me about gypsies and racism, and from my experience it's more like a conflict than recism.
So there are 2 types of gypsies or Roma in Romania, one is the type that does refuse to respect the law and to addapt or integrate, and for the longest time the guvernment did not force them to do anything. So what ended happening was that they would be nomads, creating makeshift "houses" out of cardboard, begging for money, refusing to lear romanian, having their own laws, traditions but also stealing, intimidating and doing some illegal things, similar to the life style presented in "slumdog millionaire" movie. I can;t say how many times I saw children missing a limb or burned put out in the street to beg. So friction started between people, thye were harrased on the streets, Romanians are against stis specific part of their culture. Since they refuse education comunication is not an option. In my town recently the gypsies that were living illegalyin makeshift places, were given new apartment buildings fully furnished for free, and they were moved there, only for the place to turn into a "slum" like place. They broke windows, dirtied the place and so on. People driving by complained that there were children snifing glue jumping in front of cars, so the council built fances around the building to stop them from jumping in the streat, but the foreing countries said the town is racist... they interpret everything negatively without knowing the events.
On the other hand there are gypsies that are craftsman, have clans, their own schoold, languge work and get along with Romanians. Even in the past they had specific jobs that they were doing and Romanians knew they were the best, and they get along with everyone and there is no racism.
So the problem when there is hostility towards gypsies, is more towards a specific atitude, or event/experience with the gypsies that beg and harras people on the street, and not with people that are gypsies because they are gypsies.

Hey Guys --- I really have to commend you on this video and for your good intentions to present Romania in a better light to foreign audiences. However, your video has some innacuracies that I would like to address: 1. Romania is one be the poorest country in the EU, but not from Europe. Statistically there are 16 other coutries poorer than us in Europe (GDP per capita PPP) Worldwide we are still in the first quarter of most develloped nations in the world.
    2. Roma people are first documented in the teritories that are now knows as Romania since 1385. They were sold as slaves to Moldavian monasteries. They have lived in these lands for at least 600-700 years so they are not new 2nd or 3rd generation mmigrants to the country. 3. Roma people hail from N-W india --- that is true - and they were driven westward by a series of Mongol and Mughal invasions. They went from N-W India - to Pakistan, Iran, West Asia, Turkey, Balcans and then after to Romanian Principalities (Moldova and Wallachia and the rest of Europe) 4. Ceausescu did not bring any factory workers from India - he just forced Roma people to work in factories and settle down . Before communism there were Roma communities either semi-nomadic or living im "mahalale" (shanty towns) and communism put a stop to that style of living. 5. Romania first formed in 1859 with the union of Wallachia (southern principality) and Moldova (Easterm principality). People from both countries spoke the same language. In 1918 (not 1912) after WW1, the majority of people from Transylvania (Romanians represented 65%) voted to join Romania and the International Community encouraged by Woodrow Wilson's principles of peoples right to self determination recognized it. Post WW1 big empires crashed (Ottomam, Austro-Hungarian, Tsarist) and many small countries based on ethmocratic principle took their place - Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, the Baltic states etc..... 6. The teritory that is now in Romania was part of the Roman empire from 106 to 271 AD. Back in the day that Roman province was called Dacia - hence the car manufacturer's name. Romanian history states that the original Romanians were a mix of Dacian indigenous people plus Roman colonists and through the centuries we got some other populations in the genetic mix - particularly Slavs and Cumans.Regardless of this origin being im part myth, we are still a Latin speaking population in Eastern Europe.

A big part of romanian history was made up like that, espescially about the transylvanian region. Romania in this form is 100 years old. Before that transylvania took part of hungary for around 1000 years except around 150 years while it was under turkish influence. Actually it was a very multicultural place with lots of different minorities. The carpatians were kind of natural borders in those times between west and east. Very close to the most western end of the silk road trading route until 1450s, when the ottoman empire closed off trade with the west. It's good to know and mention..despite haters gonna ignore that, and tell that its not true or start start complaining about who was here first and who not.

Funny fact, guys.. Ceaușescu was a lot of stuff, but not a Russian suck up. He loved the power communism provided him, but actually hated the Russians. He was closer to North Coreea 😂
When Czechoslovakia was invaded, in '68, he was the only communist leader that condemned that publicly and refused to take part in it.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ceau%C8%99escu%27s_speech_of_21_August_1968
Russian was taught in schools here but not imposed.
He also banned abortion and contraception, which led to Romanian women having A LOT of kids. During the '90, inflation in our area reached up to 300% and guess what? Families had to face that AND grow all the kids they had before the fall of communism. Those were very tough times, so as a result, people nowadays prefer to have less kids.
