      I've never heard a bar band bass owner play this song correctly. I've also never seen a completely accurate transcription of it online which makes sense as to why everyone seems to play it wrong. They're all learning it from incorrect sources. I play it like he's demonstrating here and have for years. Only I lay back a little bit more. This feels a bit too on top of the beat to me.

      @@theangriestbassplayer7492 Well you heard a bar band bass player do it right HERE,, and you mighta been getting it right all along BUT Aerosmith is NOTORIOUS for "rough" finished tracks ESPECIALLY the extremely popular ones,, so Troy can be "let off the hook" for getting the baseline SLIGHTly incorrect... The TRUE test of a solid musical artist is to admit you can always do it a little better and that there might be some things you've missed, and adjusting your rendition accordingly...

    This was the last song I played bass on with the last bar band I played with. It was around 10 minutest to 2am closing and and since I played the intro and the rest of the band were DRUNK (I don't drink so they took the shots the crowd would send up) I started and it was like they were all trying to get into a revolving door at the same time to come in and someone would screw up and it was try again. 5 Minutes of me playing that opening riff and I packed up my basses and told them 'you guys need rehab'. That WAS the night I saw someone break a beer bottle and go after someone who had hit on their girl, so I had that square marked off my bar band bingo card. Great job as always, and like you, I didnt really want to play that song.

    Troy, @ 07:45 you discuss omitting the 'extra' note... I view this as sort of a change up, to the first intro section, and tend to keep it, especially when our drummer and I are in sync. Does the isolated track you've used not have it, as well?

    HAPPY NEW YEAR FONZY!!!
    Yeh this is a weird one to cover. Not a huge fan either, to me Aerosmith and Metallica were horribly overplayed (kinda like Boston, for you) I was in a band (in the mid 80s, playing guitar) covering this one too… it never sounded right tho, some songs just might be, better heard than played. Maybe it’s like seeing, that the wizard, is just a guy behind the curtain? The licks during the intro and verse, do look like fun exercises tho… Im going to try learning it as a bass player now, maybe it will feel better.
    You are the best, thank you for another year of fun, inspiration, and appreciated conversations. You’re important, and loved. Cheers

      I don't ever remember Metallica being overplayed, except for when "Enter Sandman" came out. Never cared for those guys either. Even though I never cared for Aerosmith, a guitar player I played with for some time REALLY liked Joe Perry. For this guy to like him, there had to be something there. Personally, I can't stand the guy's face.
      Thanks so much, Tommy, for the very kind words. As always, I greatly appreciate them. The long holiday weekend is officially over... time to start'a-cryin.

    Troy how is the output and string balance on that bass is it even from string to string and throughout the neck? Anything playing or sound wise you would like to see improved?

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  8 місяців тому

      Great question. I'm a real stickler for even and balanced string output across the fretboard and up and down the neck. This bass is about as good as it gets. No wolf tones and the higher notes cut through nicely. No real dead spots to speak of. Not that it matters, but the pickup is from one of those old Guild basses that I like so much. The one thing I will say is that the E string doesn't respond quite the same as the other strings. I can get a certain amount of "bark" out of the A, D, and G strings with my standard pluck, but I need to approach the E string a little differently. This is not uncommon (for me) as I have a number of basses that work like this. Also, Joe built a custom case for the p/u. I know that the wood between the pole pieces and the strings doesn't really effect the sound, but I think the extra distance caused me to miss a bit of the "sizzle" I'm used to getting from these pickups. I, just recently, had Joe drill out holes in the case, so the pole pieces are now exposed and sit flush with the case. I can hear the difference.

    ‘I love nothing more than a nice upward slide’. Bassman’s words to live by. I agree and always revel in those slide opportunities . I’m thinking of Journey’s ‘Don’t Stop Believin’ line ‘Somewhere in the niiiiight…Good slide part….Double slide really! A bunch of us have endured playing this Aerosmith tune. The intro is part of my warm-up routine. The bits & pieces minutiae that you explained were a sort of a-ha, so THAT’S how it’s played. It’s hard to decipher preciseness from the album track. Any song that opens with a catchy bass line captures me right away. Ramble On, Jump Into the Fire, Come Together, Billie Jean, Money…
    Loved the Variety Show rebellion story. A mutiny. That’s one effective way to fracture a band’s comraderie. I’m curious what was the other song that was rejected.
    As always, thanks for all the effort and attention to detail that you put into your vids. I hope you have as much fun presenting the final rendition as we do listening. Looking forward to another year of enjoying the background macabre setting and witnessing your virtuosic renditions. Happy New Year to you Lynn, whisker tribe, and your families.

      They didn't think that "Suffragette City" was cool enough and that it was boring. I think it would have been a perfect song for a panel evaluating bands for a High School variety show. The first time I auditioned for the variety show, we did "Overture" off of 2112. That went over like a fart in church too.

    They never really rang my bell either. Personally, I've always felt Aerosmith was more about image than solid music after the 70's, although if I was going to listen to their music, it would only be from the '70s. They found a great way to market and reinvent themselves later in the 80's so they enjoyed pretty massive success, but their music from then on was pretty cookie-cutter. Just my opinion, of course, as they had way more success than any band I've been in. lol
