Glad you found the best kept secret in music, Rory was the greatest guitar player, but never got the recognition he deserved.
Rory was a great talent that rejected the big music industry. His brother was his manager.
This is an earlier selection describing his early career playing at the fairs. R.I.P. you were one of a kind.
lrelands finest. Hendrix said he was the best guitarist he had ever seen .
"Brute force And Ignorance" by Rory Gallagher!🙏
Thanks for the excellent reaction. Rory (RIP), a guitar great, a showman, backed by a brilliant band.
Glad you enjoyed it
Rory Gallagher is an Irish legend. He was so good
One of my greatest regrets was never seeing Rory live, where I live in Ireland is about 40 minutes drive from where he lived, the man is a legend.
Dig deeper into his live stuff and try some of his acoustic stuff
Tattoo’d Lady Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Tattoo'd Lady
Bearded baby
They're my family
When I was lonely
Something told me, where
I could always be
[Verse 2]
Where I could
Wish for pennies
If you got any
You'd meet me down
At the shooting gallery
You know I'm a
Fair ground baby
Wonder what made me
Fall for the pearly queen
More Rory? How about Sinner Boy from the Isle of Wight.
Seen Gallagher five or six times and had a mutual friend in Roland Van Campenhout (a Belgian Blues-rocker who knew Rory's brother well), through which I had the chance to chat with Rory; the first time as a snotty-nosed kid of fifteen at the 1976 Bilzen Jazz festival in Belgium. Talked with Rory again, backstage at the 1981 Reading Rock Festival in England, armed with some pints of Lager. Gallagher was one of the most friendly guys you could find. Very approachable and open for a chat about most things you can think of. Soft-spoken, witty, with a great sense of humor and a boy-ish charm that attracted quite a few people of the female variety. Though I never saw him take advantage of it, on the several occasions I met him. He also remembered me the second time we met, which made me like him even more. And to finish, Jimi Hendrix was once asked how it felt to be the best guitar player in the world, and Hendrix replied: "I don't know, you'd have to ask Rory Gallagher...".
Jimi Hendrix rated Rory Gallagher as the best guitarist ever. He should know.
I was lucky enough to see Rory in concert twice. Best guitarist I've ever seen live. He put everything into his performances. He always preferred playing in small venues because he liked being closer to the audience. His fans really love him.
Definitely a microphone issue.
Still a good performance.
I was introduced to Rory's music by an old schoolmate, also the sax player in our first band, whose father was from the same county in Ireland. It's pronounced Gal-a-her, btw, the guy who announced them gets it right, I usually forget. 'Bullfrog Blues' is generally my first thought when I hear his name. I saw him numerous times in the 70s in Toronto. Great entertainer, musician.
In 1976 I bought a guitar amp from a guy who used to live with Lou Martin, Rory's keyboardist, Rory gave it to him, it was destroyed in a fire later that year along with most of my belongings.
Anyway, great performance, cool reaction, though the difficulty understanding the words may just have been his enunciation, y'know, the bluesy, southern inflections adopted by many artists involved in the worldwide popularization of music from America that America had dismissed and marginalized as "race music". Watched an old Black Sabbath video of 'War Pigs' yesterday that also had two mics(mikes =microphones) joined with electrical tape, as here, not duct tape. Maybe one mic for a TV, radio or other separate feed. It's fine, even if it looks odd, it was representative of solutions to fit the situation at the time.
✌🏼😊🎶❤🍁❤️✨️🕊
Rest In Peace, Rory 🇮🇪 🎸🎵
I didn’t know about Rory Gallagher until a few years ago. What a talent! I was raised in the Detroit area in the 70’s and early 80’s and can’t ever recall hearing him on Detroit radio stations. I see why now reading some of the comments.
Rory was Irish try shadow play or wayward child or Shin Kicker live the man was brilliant
Saw him the first time on this tour and many times after ,his bass player is still keeping his memory alive . Well worth seeing .
Sound. Yeah, problem one is his voice is too low in the mix. Problem two is Rory’s habit of cutting off the end of words. And stepping away from the mic just before ending a line of lyrics. It’s not your ears Kathy. Shame as he has a lovely voice. And the words are indeed very interesting. About working in a fairground. Great line about a police chief and a garter and wearing it like a crown. Best heard in the studio version. His truly mega song all over UA-cam is A Million Miles Away. Masterpiece.
I also made a priority request for A Million Miles Away.... maybe we will hear it soon
Angus was great, but Rory was on another level
Check out Shadow Play The live version. Full Tilt Boogie.
Live at Montreax, 79. Great version.
Wonderful reaction to the legendary Rory Gallagher (pronounced Gall-a-her).This was a clip from the documentary "Irish Tour '74", recorded while Rory performed in Ireland, including Northern Ireland, during the Troubles, when no other artists would dare hold a show in Belfast. Fascinating story. Try checking out some later live pieces with clearer recordings, such as pieces from any Rockpalast show, the "Rock Goes to College" performance, the 1984 Belfast show, the 1977 Hammersmith Odeon show or the acoustic "Me and My Music" performance from the BBC. All have some great pieces. Please check out more from this incredibly talented musician, who was also a decent human as well.
This is from his Irish Tour album. It's one of the best live albums ever. Listen to that sound and the energy. I own that album. Rory was never interested in Rock or Pop status, but he was the real thing.
"Shin kicker" and "Shadow play" Live 79 Montreal !!!! Rory is a Irish Guitar-wizzard.
Ladies your infectious banter keeps me tuned to you Despite some of the bands that are unflicted on you. Loved Rory from his days with Taste. A master guitarist died way too young.
Rory!
I gave the video a thumbs up even before I played it!
to me still the best guitarist ever an reporter once asked Jimmy Hendrix How does it feel to be best guitarist Jimmy answered i don,t know ask Rory Rory made his old Fender live .R.I. P. also Jimmy .
Season 14 and 15
Jimi Hendrix was asked how he felt being the best guitar player. He said ask Rory.
Rory was soooooo great. A great guitarist that I love, love, love!!!!!!!!!
Thanks James, Rory was one of a kind! Saw him n L.A. twice, best shows ever!
Did you see him in 92 when Slash came out for one of his encores to jam with him?
@@williambevins No, in '78 I saw him at the Starwood in Hollywood, then at the Country Club in Reseda whenever "Jinxed" came out.. I wanted to see him again but I missed the next time or two he toured. I bet that would have been amazing!
@@dedcowbowee I was at that show at the Country Club. 82 I think. Saw him in L.A. again in 91 but I don't remember the venue. We saw Slash at the ticket window and later saw him in the VIP section. Rory brought Slash onstage for one of his encores and they jammed on a couple of Chuck Berry songs. As good as Slash is you can tell that Rory was the true master. It w as pretty awesome.
@@williambevins Wow, what a show to see! Dates sound right, lol. That Country Club show was memorable.👍 I wanted to see him that time around, ('91)just didn't work out! I was working in a defense plant and was doing "mandatory overtime" seven days a week! No way i could have gone.😟I've seen Slash talk about that here on YT, nice to run into someone who was at the CC and Slash shows! Have you seen Brian May talk about meeting Rory?
@@dedcowbowee Yes, I've heard May talk about him. Also Alex Lifeson and The Edge all have talked about him in interviews. He influenced a lot of folks. Been a fan of Rory since the early 70s. I was devastated when he passed away.
I sat right next to the stage in a small club when I saw Linda Ronstadt and I did touch her.
Jimmy Hendrix was once asked by a journalist how it felt to be the best guitarist in the world. Hendrix answered that he didn’t know and that they had to ask Rory Gallagher that question. You don’t see it so well in the video but that guitar he is using is used a lot.
It looks like it has been found on a dumpster. If I remember correctly that guitar will be auctioned off in October this year. It is one of the most recognizable guitars there is and will cost the one that buys it more than a million dollars.
That is because Rory Gallagher was voted by other musicians in Melody Maker magazine, as the world's best rock guitarist for a few years in a row. It looks like Jimi Hendrix was snubbed I guess....
@@jameswagoner3309 I think Hendrix was just being sarcastic. All these voting about who is best guitar player is just a bunch of baloney. I saw that Taylor Swift was voted number eight in one of these votings. With all respect to Taylor Swift and her music I think I can come up with at least 100 guitarist that are better than her. Usually the ones that are listed are famous persons but famous is not the same as being the best. Let me give you one example. Have you ever heard of Danny Gatton? Probably not. He was also called “The Humbler” because a lot of more famous musicians walked off stage with red faces after having had a gig with him and understood that he had outperformed them. Unfortunately he committed suicide when he was on the bring of real fame so the big audiences never hear of. Hendrix was brilliant and innovative but there are so many others that are the same and play a different category of music.
Rory had a rare blood type which was acidic and his sweat caused the paint to come off his Strat. That's what gave it the beat up look.
@@williambevins I know that his sweating was the reason why the guitar looked so beat up but still he must have played on it for thousands of hours. I did not know that he had a special blood type. A guitar sounds better the more you play on it and it starts to loosen after more than 1000 hours. I heard about a guy that inherited a crap brand guitar from an uncle that passed away. This uncle had been a lifelong member of the Salvation Army and had used the guitar for probably 30 years or so. It sounded lovely on the typical Salvation Army cords like D,G,E,A and C, but if you tried to play more advanced jazz chords you could clearly hear that this was not a top of the line guitar.
@@runedahl1477 The first time I saw him he had the old strat with him and he also had a second white strat that he played. Years later when I saw him again he still had the old strat but this time he had a telecaster as his second guitar. I think he uses different tunings and that's why he switched guitars. You are right. The old strat sounded phenomenal live.
A Million Miles Away live from The Ireland Tour
Lou Martin on keys 😊
You are welcome, ladies.
