You said in sone older video that you don't get why any metal drummer would be interested in your content, well, I'm a metal drummer trying to get faster fingers for blast beats and also trying to incorporate more doubles and other rudimentary stuff into my playing to escape the "16th notes on the toms" fill curse and your explanations really resonate with how I understand stuff.
I have played a ton with friends and also for a long time about 3 years. It can be really scary performing live for the first time but when you keep at it, playing live becomes easier at some point. You begin to notice subtle improvements that encourage you to aspire to become better
Thank you for this fantastic lesson, Stephen!!! I am beyond thrilled that you did this lesson on strengthening the weaker hand (left for me). I've been searching for something that would help me develop my weaker hand and your lesson popped up in my notifications!! When I first started, about two years ago I thought, I will never be able to play as well with my left hand compared to my right hand. However, my left hand is better than when I first started two years ago. But I still struggle to keep up. My goal is to strengthen my left hand so I can improve my timing with doubles, singles, etc. I'm determined to work at this to get better and with this lesson.... I know I can do this!! :) Thanks so much for all you do! You are an amazing teacher! By the way, I love the view! ☺🥁
ive watched a few of your videos and they helped me get going. i learned french grip then blast beats and was having a hard time bridging the gap. youre a great teacher! your lessons are concise and straight to the point. thanks eh! got something new to practice this week. i couldve saved some time coming here first lol. Cheers!
i can't like this video enough. thank you so much, stephen. i drilled it for about half an hour with a towel listening to music. and then i jumped on a kit not expecting much - *_H O L Y C R A P_* - what a game changer for my sense of touch. it feels like the stick is glued to my hand now - or like an actual extension of my hand, rather than just a stick i'm holding. i thought i had decent stick control before, but this really kicked my handling 3x with such an easy adjustment. and even after just my first try, i can already tell it's one of those techniques that i don't even need to remember to use... it's just the way i'm going to practice and play from now on. your impact is huge
This lesson is fantastic and gives me hope for growth. The first sign of weak finger strength for me was when I eliminated all use of wrist and watched how my tips drifted all over the surface of the pad, leg. I understand the patience needed for development, and, due to sports injuries both pinkies and left ring fingers are left deformed, so, by default, I’ve attempted to get progressively better over a half century of playing. No wonder my abilities to play plateaued. Thank you, Steve.
Thank you for the lesson Stephen! Hope your basement will be OK soon, even if I really like the fireplace view. ❤ Working out the fingers is so much fun and helpful in so many ways. I do train them to balance my hands and play jazz and prog timekeeping and fast and precise ghost notes as well as even rolls. Working on this for three weeks now and slowly getting results. Should take about 3 months to get me to my goals.
Thanx for this so simple exercise anyone can take every day in trafic jam 🙂 Nice place to play drums, and it's really great on the camera. (I take the pillow for myself : « the less rebound, the better ! » :-)
This feels like the perfect exercise to do while muted and listening in on a Zoom meeting. Already feeling the forearm burn! I wonder if you could also get similar muscle/timing development by alternately tapping your middle and ring finger on the pad of your palm (for when you're not at home)
Hi Stephen, Excellent video as usual. I’d love to see transitions as how the wrists and fingers move through singles to doubles and paradiddles…As the tempo goes up. You mentioned you are making that slight adjustment with the stick as you speed up as to what part of the fingers are making contact.(no longer tips of fingers). I’d love to see what changes there are to hand positioning if any. Thanks !!
It appears you are using an index finger fulcrum in this exercise. Is that true? I was taught index finger fulcrum and am working on switching to middle finger as I’ve listened to your explanation of doing so. Thanks
I play with slippers as well sometimes, not sure if that's what you got going, lets me really feel the pedal when switching around dynamics etc.. Just curious.
I was under the impression that fingers help bring the stick down. I was relying on the rebound to bring the stick up and then engaging the fingers to bring it down. On a surface like my leg that has no rebound the fingers seem to not help. I’m sure I’m doing this wrong. Any advice for this specific issue? Thanks,
I agree that this is a bit confusing, since the rebound is what the fingers use to snap the stick down. Is there a bit of Moeller to raise the stick back up for the fingers?
I believe you, but my fingers cannot even handle singles at 60 bpm. They do not even know what drums are. They get around that stick and their part is to ensure the stick does not end up on the floor. Usually. It is going to take several months, probably, before my fingers come close to adding anything to my playing. I will find some exercises and keep trying to improve them, but it may just be that I am a slow drum player where 100 bpm doubles is my limit.
I manage to get 140 with left hand but as soon as I alternate with the right hand, it doesn't work anymore as it was alone, my left hand becomes rigid. How can I solve this? Thanks
Hell is the default destination for all mankind for the sins we commit. But God loved the world so much, he became flesh (man) 2000 years ago, sacrificed his life for us, dying a brutal death for us in atonement for our sins (which is justified). The wages of sins is death and Christ paid the fine by dying for us, was buried and rose alive on the third day, lived a perfect life we couldn't and went on to heal, bless, cast out evils and today He sits next to God on His throne in Heaven. If you put your faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and savior, turn from your sins, and choose to follow Him, he will forgive you of your sins and grant you everlasting life with God in heaven when Jesus returns to judge all mankind. JESUS LOVES YOU For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16 Read the Holy Bible daily, get baptized in a Christian church and join them in fellowship and uplifting as brother and sisters encourage one another.
why not? most drum kits he's going to come across out in the wild are going to be set up for right handed drummers. besides, he has the option to play open hand, which could be much more advantageous
I retire in 1 week. I will be watching your videos and practicing every day and hopefully become half the drummer as you.

This guy is critical for me as a new drummer. Thanks Stephen!
Woohoo, moved out of the garage into the living room! 🙌🏼🙌🏼

16th notes on the hats for funk and samba!! 5 note swing at 300 BPM... AKA Tony Williams!! THX STEPHEN!
Thank you for the lesson Stephen!

Please discuss stick size and weight for exercises for this task...

Week hand, more speed and not getting tired

Listen to Ginger Baker on the Blind Faith song Do What You Like. Simply incredible swing work
I use German grip, same premise?
My issue as a drummer is I struggle to play with my arms more than my wrist.
I’m looking forward to a better 6 stroke roll.
We want the doubles to sound like singles... Got it.
🤙🏼
Why are your drums in the family room? Your wife must be on vacation.
Nevermind you explained

Nuts to think fingers are better than wrists. Waco.
if you coordinate shoulder, elbow, wrist, down to fingers, you just get that much more dynamic control
Why are you playing like right handed drummer, if you are a left handed?

@@360.Tapestry but he doesn't play open handed
@@rapclick8746 oh, well, i guess he should quit music if he's not following all your rules
By the way don’t hit your leg hard 🤣
Stephen! Your videos are amazing! Huge thanks on behalf of the entire drum community and your subs 🤌
