I unfortunately had an impact accident (hit a rock) with my Sting Ray SX and damaged the lower half of my outdrive. The upper half was fine. I was shocked when I learned how much an OEM replacement cost! Needless to say, I will be more careful and Ted's video helps me understand how I might rebuild my lower VP SX outdrive in the future vs. replacing it again!
@@tedsmarinerepair8956 Thank you so much for the quick reply. If its not too much trouble, do you happen to have a part # for that tool? I can't seem to find the proper tool. Its to remove the vertical shaft from the stuck pinion gear (maybe the lower bearing?
I have the same question, but I can't find an answer anywhere. This is the closest to that detail I've found and it just jumps to the shaft being removed
You didn’t show pulling out the prop shaft. Mine has a slight bend in it, which I need to replace. Is it as simple as pulling out the bent shaft and sticking in a new one?
I have a Volvo Penta Cobra SX and I noticed when running on the muffs I have a fair amount of water coming out of the area where the front of the lower gear case bolts on. Is this cause for concern? I never really saw that before. Thanks.
You said the upgrade is the sx-a so would that bolt up to the existing upperhalf of the sx system or would you need to re gear the upper half of the sx to accept the sx-a lower 🤔
Hello i had to drill out the 3/8 bolt in there. Do you have any tips on how I can now remove the rest of the bolt? It is difficult to access with tools.
I have the same question as a lot of other commenters is that you skipped the part or did not show removing the driveshaft. I have to replace my driveshaft as it is bent and I need to know how to do it. Be nice to have a video that shows how to do it. Cannot find a video on prop shaft removal on UA-cam at all.
Sorry but not cost worthy, the issue is with the combined gear ratios of both the upper and the lower. Typically the upper gear ratio will also need to be re-geared to match the desired overall gear ratio for a DPS application. Remember you are trying to add another prop which changes the load on the engine.
Great video, excellent narration and explanation of tools and steps required, true professional. Just what I have been searching for.
Glad to help!

I also rebuild them and have a couple of sx lowers in stock if needed at half the cost of new.

At around 6 mins that view of the gear case, is that front cavity exhaust? If I’m leaking water there is it a problem? Thanks.
Great video. Any advice if the pinion gear is firmly stuck on the vertical shaft?
you need the VP puller for that, if you evenly tighten down on the bolts it will pop

Great video, did the prop shaft just come out by just loosening carrier bearing

I need to press the bearing off the prop shaft. How does the prop shaft come out as this part was skipped in the video?
That's in the manual. You need the special tool

Please email me a video of this at marinedoc01@yahoo.com so I can see exactly what's going on.

The previous DPS and the SX drive were replaced by the DPS-A & SX-A in 2006. They are not interchangeable

Is that the propshaft Or vertical driveshaft your asking about.
Can this particular model be upgraded be a dp driver?
