One of my favourite releases from this band is the Supercoven EP. Those two songs are the perfect bridge between the weird psychedelia of Come My Fanatics and the evil crushing heaviness of Dopethrone, which makes sense given the time of release. The buildup in the title track is just amazing. Also, I really like Let us Pray a lot. It is definitely their most experimental work and I dig that, especally as, in my opinion at least, they could do with some of that spirit nowadays as their last few records have been a bit on the dull side. But where else are you going to hear piano and violin-scraping on an Electric Wizard album? It is definitely a loud and distorted-sounding record, but that's EW for you. I do think the sheer nihilistic darkness of this band is underestimated by some, and maybe that's why I don't much like the term "stoner" when describing them -- it's simply that "stoner doom" has generally come to represent something more light-hearted and fun, where as EW are about as fun as hanging with Charles Manson and his gang, doing really powerful acid in the wrong place and with the wrong people, and dropping out of life to become a maniac.
The end of Dopethrone on vinyl loops around and repeats the sinister laugh track until one lifts the needle.. The first time I realised this was coming to from a stoned and drunk coma to that laugh reverberating through my head..
Got Come My Fanatics in the '90s, and that being the first EW I heard, tis my top pick. Beyond that, the s/t, Supercoven, We Live and Witchcult Today. I like Dopethrone - and saw the original three piece on that tour - but the recurring vocal effect throughout doesn't work for me. Still have an original first pressing on white vinyl that doesn't track correctly in spots ...they did a recall from the old Stoner Rock online store back then but I kept mine. Killer band of legendary cult status, and one that likewise established the relationship between being a fan of old horror flicks and Black Sabbath with that of being unapologetically into Doom Metal ...which, believe me, was not always a "cool" thing to be into ha
Hi all. Love the channel to death. Up to the year 2000, the Oxford English Dictionary defined 'heavy' as “Of great weight; weighty, ponderous, massively; burdensomely, oppressively, monolithic. The opposite of light.” Since 2000 the entry is a picture of Electric Wizard (I assume). I’m not the most patriotic person - particularly in recent years. However, I’m immensely proud to come from the same country that spawned Electric Wizard. World, you’re welcome. P.S. It doesn’t rain as much over here as you’ve been led to believe. Annoyingly, it is raining today though, which does dampen my point. Touché, guys. Touché.
Always great to have Ryan in the co-captain chair and appreciated his enthusiasm for the band's music. Listened to your joint top choice. No doubt the heaviest doom record I've heard after following SoT for almost four years. Thanks, guys, for reviewing the band 's catalogue.
This was the ranking the album's episode I've been waiting for Electric wizard. Fantastic job. Pete and Ryan.. My long wait for this episode was well worth it..
What a fantastic band. "Come My Fanatics" is my favorite. I knew 'em back when that album dropped (thanks Kerrang!!) and it's still my fave to this day. The "Supercoven EP" and "Dopethrone" come next. Loved "Let us Prey".
Great show, loved hearing Ryan's excitement when he's describing their sound. This band and Boris were the bands that got me back into rock after a diversion into electronic music in the 90's.
I love this band. I was going to share my ranking, but it's the same as Ryan's, so... less work for me. Weird story: in 2007 I was introducing my friend to Electric Wizard and we were driving through Minneapolis with Dopethrone cranked as high as it could be in the car. After crossing over the Mississippi River we felt./heard a roar over the music. That was when the 35W bridge collapsed. We were about a block away, having just crossed and my friend (to ease the terror we were feeling as we stopped to help) said that it happened because of the power of Electric Wizard.
1) Dopethrone 2) Come My Fanatics… 3) We Live 4) Let Us Pray 5) Witchcult Today 6) Electric Wizard 7) Black Masses 8) Time to Die 9) Wizard Bloody Wizard
9. Wizard Bloody Wizard 8. Let Us Prey 7. Time to Die 6. Black Masses 5. Electric Wizard 4. Witchcult Today 3. Dopethrone 2. Come My Fanatics 1. We Live
Teeth of Lions Rule the Divine's album "Rampton" is amazing. Love Electric Wizard and honestly can't argue too much with what yous have said. I'll not go through a full list but "Witchcult Today, Come My Fanatics, Dopethrone, Electric Wizard and Black Masses" are my top releases.
Here's mine: 1. Dopethrone 2. Witchcult Today 3. Come My Fanatics… 4. We Live 5. Black Masses 6. Time To Die 7. Let Us Prey 8. Electric Wizard 9. Wizard Bloody Wizard
Excellent ranking video, guys! My ranking would be very similar to both of yours. ‘We Live’ is the one for me that I would have trouble placing, could go with either of your placements there. Agreed that Dopethrone is definitely a high point (or would it be a ‘low point’?) of doom metal, absolutely classic.
Come My Fanatics is my favorite. And then the run from Let Us Prey, We Live to Witchcult Today is all quality. They kind of lost me from Black Masses going forward. And I'm not really a huge fan of Dopethrone. The distorted vocal effect on that album really wears on me.
My top three albums from Electric Wizard would be: 1.) Witchcult Today 2.) Dopethrone and 3.) Come My Fanatics.Saturnine was the first song I ever heard from them, and still my favorite. I remember when Pete and Martin Popoff did the Halloween special a couple years ago and picked their scariest albums. Dopethrone is definitely one of the scariest albums ever heard. Some other stuff that's really good is the Acoustic Wizard album and the song Chrononaut, which could be one of their best songs of all time, in my opinion, as it is totally unlike anything else they have ever done, more psychedelic space rock.
The perfect album ranking to kick off the month of October. Great job. I only own three so mine would be: 1- Dopethrone, 2- Come My Fanatics, 3 - Witchcult Today.
Satan's Wrath is great black thrash in the vein of early slayer/possessed...Taz is also in a great band called Mirror, music is very Uriah Heep, Rainbow, Mercyful Fate..
Tas Danazoglou's currently in 'Friends ov hell' with Albert Witchfinder from Revernd Bizarre (PS please rank RB's albums-they only have three full lengths but would love to hear what you fellas think).. Jus said in an interview the sound/production of the first E Wiz album was supposed to be whole lot nastier, but for reasons beyond the band it did not come out that way..
It took me some time to be able to enjoy Electric Wizard's music. The raw, ugly production was a turn off for me initially, despite the fact that I really liked the whole idea and vibe of Electric Wizard. I'm happy to say that I really dig them now.
Pete and Ryan,go and check out the doom band Hamferð,they are from the Faroe Islands and have released two albums and one EP. Their last album was released on Metal Blade records.
45:51 the fuzz pedal used on dopethrone and come my fanatics was actually based off a design from the 60's. not only was that sound easy to obtain, it's also old enough that hendrix probably heard it at some point in his life, though i don't know if he ever used the original pedal with that circuit, the univox super fuzz
Nice shout out to 'Teeth of Lions Rule the Divine', Ryan! The name of the album 'Rampton' is a reference to an English hospital for the criminally insane haha
1. Dopethrone 2. Come My Fanatics 3. Witchcult Today 4. Electric Wizard 5. We Live 6. Time To Die 7. Wizard Bloody Wizard 8. Let Us Prey 9. Black Masses
Ryan, just hilarious comments on here. Love this episode. Great band that deserves all the praise.
Pete you should do a top 30 doom albums one month. I've been watching you for 3 years and I don't recall you doing one for doom
Nope, we' ve done various doom episodes on HVS and a few other shows, but not a month long doom series. Good idea.
100% agreed! And another month featuring top modern bands doing HQ retro-oriented & 70’s heavy rock inspired! A lot of great stuff! Cheers
@@seaoftranquilityprogtrue very true!
Electric Wizard are the perfect spooky October band! Happy to hear the discography runthrough

I agree. I prefer it over We live, which had lost a bit of steam for my taste, but they came back with a vengeance with Witchcult today

Ryan have you ever listened to any of the early Madder Mortem stuff. 👍

After Taz left he released 3 albums in a band called Satan's Wrath. Well worth checking out if you haven't heard them
Satan's Wrath is great black thrash in the vein of early slayer/possessed...Taz is also in a great band called Mirror, music is very Uriah Heep, Rainbow, Mercyful Fate..
I suspect that it would appeal to Mr Skow!
👍
He formed another band called Friends of Hell.
Cheers guys, that's 2 bands that I'll need to check out!

How about some death/doom. Rank the albums by Paradise Lost
A very local band to me.
Boss FZ2 Hyper Fuzz is Dopethrone.
Ryan o didn't know Ramses came out of electric wizard. I own early vinyl of of Rameses and if fold out the album you get a awesome picture.
Nice shout out to 'Teeth of Lions Rule the Divine', Ryan! The name of the album 'Rampton' is a reference to an English hospital for the criminally insane haha
That’s a monolithic doom album that really seems to fly under the radar! It’s great though. Talk about heavy!!
Amazing album!!!!!
It's an absolute beast and it's odd it's not mentioned as much as say Thorrs Hammer or something. @@Conan_WhatIsBestInLife

Karen 🫠
Hmm I like the old school SoT Pete- Ryan Skow combo. No reason another SoT contributor can’t talk about fuzz/stoner/psych. No slight intended.
@@jimmycampbell78 All I meant was that this particular band would've been right up her alley. All about the fuzz and what not. Geez.

And all I meant was that I thought Ryan did a great job. Karen might be a fan but not know all of the Electric Wizard albums.

No one really likes it that much!
