Mickey and David Freiberg both sang it live, but David co-wrote it with Jim McPherson. Chronologically its was Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship and then Starship. Grace Slick was in all 3 groups
One of the greatest pop/rock songs ever. Radio-pop structure with rock backbeat and instrumentation. All hats off to Mickey Thomas ... all day, every day.
Right from the first chords played I know what I'm about to jam to. I've heard this song so many times and yet I won't fast forward because it's such a great song to just groove to. So many good songs with this band. Though Grace Slick was more prominent in Jefferson Airplane, she does sing some songs with Jefferson Starship and Starship. There's a song they sing called "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" that is featured in the 80s movie Mannequin that's a good song and a cute movie as well. 😎👍
How lucky am I that I grew up with this song on radio every single day? And still is on classic stations everywhere. This was the best era in music history!!!
Oh no, are you kidding??? Craig Chaquico was off the chain! Check out "Save Your Love" for a finale with Craig and Aynsley Dunbar blowing the roof off.
BJ, the drummer on this song is also the drummer on the next song y'all reacted to. His name is Aynsley Dunbar. He was in Journey before he joined Jefferson Starship. He played with Whitesnake, Jeff Beck and David Bowie back in the day. He is literally considered one of the best rock drummers of all time.
What happened was that John Barbata, the drummer for Jefferson Starship (who had been in The Turtles and Crosby Stills Nash & Young before that) got into an awful car wreck, took a couple of years to heal, and ended up retiring from music. (He's fine. Just quit the biz.) So the Starship needed a drummer, and as Journey wasn't exactly a big name (and perhaps Dunbar thought new vocalist Steve Perry was changing the direction of the band too much), it wasn't too hard for them to convince Aynsley to switch to the #1 band on the San Francisco scene. (Of course, within 5 years, Journey had gone supersonic and were doing stadium tours, but so it goes.) Dunbar had left the band by the time Paul Kantner (RIP) also quit, meaning that there were no original Jefferson Airplane members left, and so Kantner was able to stop them from using the "Jefferson" part of the name. (Remember, Grace Slick was not an original part of the Airplane.). But as "Starship", Mickey Thomas and the group had enormous success anyhow. ("We Built This City" and so forth.) Indeed, they once again surpassed Journey, who were broken up by then. So Dunbar kind of missed the boat, both coming and going. The drummer on those later "Starship" albums is Donny Baldwin, who's with the touring present-day Jefferson Starship. (Kantner's dead, so they can use "Jefferson" again.). Singing for the group appears to be David Freiberg, who was playing the keyboards and doing backing vocals on this track. I don't see Mickey Thomas listed as being in the current group; I think he's touring on his own, nowadays. (The reason poor Chris Smith doesn't have his name in blue on Wikipedia is because, unlike all the others, he doesn't have a Wikipedia page of his own. Guy's been in the band for 25 years now; they could give him a little bit of respect, lol.)
@Jessica Roth Aynsley was actually fired by Journey after a gig in Oakland in 1978. He actually sued them over it - and won. I don't think he officially joined Starship until early 1979 but I don't remember all the circumstances. I know Freedom at Point Zero didn't come out until late 79.
@@clarkmacgowan5114 Did not know that! They actually fired Aynsley to hire Steve Smith? Incredible. (Some people love Smith, but I don't.) Do you have a link to any articles? I'd love to learn more. Thanks.
Mickey Thomas! One of the greatest voices of all time! 🎤😎 He also did the vocals on "Fooled Around and Fell In Love" by Elvin Bishop, which you guys reacted to back in January. More Jefferson Starship/Starship: "Find Your Way Back", "Sara", "We Built This City", and "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now". Several of these tracks also feature the amazing Grace Slick on vocals. 😎😎😎

Welcome aboard the Starship, Mickey Thomas. His vocal power helped to launch this group into the upper atmosphere and beyond !! Mickey Thomas was paired with Grace Slick after leaving Elvin Bishop, whose song FOOLED AROUND AND FELL IN LOVE, you recently reacted to, gave the group a new and updated sound. His vocals also brought them new fans and new glory at the end of the 7o's. Mickey Thomas is a great singer. Give their "It's Not Enough" "Find Your Way Back" "We Built This City" a try. I karaoked "Find Your Way Back" once, it was fun!
David Bowie put out an album of some of his favorite "British Invasion"-era songs - Pin-Ups - that has drummer Aynsley Dunbar on it (he was a well-respected "hired gun"): his playing on it "smokes", as well.
Glad to see younger people listening to music I heard growing up. If you haven't heard Stranger by Jefferson Starship check it out some time. Great lead guitars on that one.
Jefferson Airplane was founded in 1966 San Francisco by Marty Balin and Paul Kantner. Jefferson Starship was founded in 1974 by Paul Kantner and Grace Slick.
The people who are in the band now are mostly not the people who recorded "Jane." Craig Chaquico was the lead guitarist and Aynsley Dunbar was the drummer on the recording. Mickey Thomas was the vocalist in the studio. Paul Kantner was one of the founding members, but he died in 2016, so he is no longer with the band. Very few bands from the 60's are still THE bands of the 60's. Even the Rolling Stones have only 2 original members left.
One of my all-time favorite songs & guitar solo , the entire song is a great guitar song , and YES this song was in HEAVY ROTATION on MTV , when they played music ! Don't go to see them now , only ONE member from this era is still in the band , it's not the same band , not even close .
Nice reaction. I have this album on vinyl " Freedom At Point Zero". Not a bad track on it in my opinion. Pulled it out the other day and gave it a listen to. Been awhile since I heard it on my system...
One track you need to check out is Mickey Thomas solo track "Stand In The Fire" from the Youngblood ST. It was written by the great songwriter Diane Warren, and features only three musicians. Producer Peter Wolf playing the keyboards and programming a sick drum machine beat. And guitarist Dann Huff laying down a fiery rhythm guitar line, and lastly, fellow Starship member guitarist Craig Chaquico ripping on a tasty lead guitar solo. If you don't react to it, at least give it a listen.
If you wanna' hear another great vocalist, check out a band called..."Badlands" and the track....."Dreams In The Dark". Ray Gillen is off the hook and their guitarist is former Ozzy axeman, Jake E. Lee. Their debut album is fire.
Reactors that don't watch the video performance, always miss Steve's amazing vocals near the end when Neal is playing his guitar solo. You guys have no idea what you're missing. Its just so beautiful it'll blow your mind if you would just choose the right video and watch it!
Oh, Mickey! His strong, high, clear, perfect voice always takes my breath.
His vocal range is just, wow!!!
If you find any of the clips of recent concerts, he hasn't lost much of that range with age.
Mickey is what singers call "a perfect tenor". Amazing vocal range, great tone and beautiful melodies.
Yep.. when he first appeared I thought no… you can’t match slick… but quickly I had to admit: he’s better. His range and tone are ridiculous….

The great Mickey Thomas on vocals and Aynsley Dunbar on drums.
Just wait until you hear some of the high notes Mickey Thomas hits with "No Way Out" & "Sara". The dude has got some unbelievable chops! Peace.
Mickey Thomas was singing here. You heard him before. Remember Elvin Bishop "Fooled Around and Fell In Love"? That was Mickey Thomas singing.
The people who are in the band now are mostly not the people who recorded "Jane."
Craig Chaquico was the lead guitarist and Aynsley Dunbar was the drummer on the recording.
The same drummer, Anysley Dunbar, believe it or not, that played on the Whitesnake 1987 album with Still of the Night, Here I Go Again etc.
Yes! My favorite song by them and one of my fave rock songs ever.
Jane was my favorite song for quite some time when it came out. I was born in 1966
One more that has the same type of piano is Find Your Way Back. That one is awesomw as well
Nice reaction. I have this album on vinyl " Freedom At Point Zero". Not a bad track on it in my opinion. Pulled it out the other day and gave it a listen to. Been awhile since I heard it on my system...
I do too ...
He also sings "Fooled around and fell in Love" :)
Forgot how much I love this song!!! Loved this reaction.
Mickey Thomas also sang Fooled Around and Fell in Love by Elvin Bishop. Keep up the good work. F.O.E.
One of the best songs anyone ever sang.
One Of the greatest sings ever . I REALLY MEAN THAT !!!!!
"White Rabbit' by Jefferson Airplane is one of my favorite songs. Definitely recommend it.
If you wanna' hear another great vocalist, check out a band called..."Badlands" and the track....."Dreams In The Dark". Ray Gillen is off the hook and their guitarist is former Ozzy axeman, Jake E. Lee. Their debut album is fire.
There with so much talent in this band.
A perfect Banger! Every instrument played a part. Beating the mess outa those drums is correct sir!
Mickey Thomas is an amazing singer
One of the best vocalists ever.
A roller skating rink song from my middle school days.
Saw them on this tour 1981, top ten singer
Starship " I didn't mean to stay all night" . Thank you guys for everything and all your time.
Yep, you guys already did a song by the great Mickey Thomas… Elvin Bishop’s “Fooled Around & Fell In Love”!
Always been a great voice.
I have loved this song for sooooo long. So glad you're reacting to it.
Reactors that don't watch the video performance, always miss Steve's amazing vocals near the end when Neal is playing his guitar solo. You guys have no idea what you're missing. Its just so beautiful it'll blow your mind if you would just choose the right video and watch it!
Starship's lead vocalist was Mickey Thomas, not Steve Perry.
Mickey and his great voice is still rockin this song and fooled around and fell in love
