    I recall reading about this fellow. Crocodilians are some of the most fascinating animals on this planet. For their existence to persist for so long is a testament to their adaptability and evolution. I am in awe of them, but would never want to come across one (and for that, I feel fortunate that I live far from where any gators would generally be seen). Fantastic job, as with your other videos! I love your work. Everything is well researched, viewed both logically and empathetically, and excellently delivered.

    If you think about it we are the perfect prey for them, we are very pattern heavy creatures often doing the same activities at roughly the same time everyday. These animals are not stupid and it’s been proven they can predict our patterns and even pick specific targets. It’s a wonder this isn’t more common or if it is we just don’t know about it.

    • @justapillow2443

      We are simultaneously the worst and best prey. We are weak in strength compared to other large mammals, we have no armor or claws, and we don't have the speed or senses to really avoid predators. But our intelligence has made us single handedly dominate and control every single predator on earth. We craft weapons that can destroy predators instantly, we retain the knowledge of a species behavior and how vulnerable they are, and we can hold grudges for generations that can lead to an entire species being wiped from history.

      Alligators don’t come in that size for the most part. I believe the world record for the American Alligator was about 19 ft but they average around 9-11 feet. Gators are also generally less interested in hunting down humans compared to crocs. Nile Crocodiles are in Africa and Saltwater Crocs live in Australian rivers, sometimes cruising in the nearby ocean as well. @allosaurusfanboy3897 4 місяці тому

      That's exactly why he said "most". Out of the thousands to hundreds of thousands of crocodiles, most do not hunt people. Yes being large apex predators does make people look like viable prey if they're lacking other food, old or can't hunt it's usual prey. Imagine being an old animal with barely enough bite to hunt a zebra and you see a human. Are you gonna risk injury or hunt a far easier meal?

  • @photographychannel3875
    @photographychannel3875 Рік тому +11

    Crocodiles are extremely intelligent and basically like psychopaths: they have no remorse, no matter how long they know you and how long you train and work with them and feed them and come close to them inside the water...one single mistake, just one, where you lose balance and fall backwards into the pool, and the croc is like "Oh, you are not you anymore? Well then, time for lunch". And should another guy come in and see the dead corpse and the croc, the croc shows no shame or remorse, its just like "Oh, well, I don't know what happened to him? But my stomach is surely full".
    And this is not meant to be a shaming of crocodiles, its just a description on how they function, even with each other, its their nature. They are not humans and don't think and function like humans, they are crocs and think and function as crocs.
    Especially Gustave has obviously observed those types of traps before, maybe he even saw how another croc got captured and since then he avoids them? Maybe he even understands how the closing mechanism works and just waited for the right time in order to capture the goat? Over 20feet long? So lets say 25feet: almost 8meters. Thats an extreme size for a modern day croc. And 60 years and still growing? 10-12m as a final leight are realistic....basically matches the size of the died out prehistoric crocs that were 10-12m long. Those hunted dinosaurs the size of a large theropod like allosaurus or even t-rex if bitten in the right angle and place and dragged to water. All facinations aside, thats an extremely dangerous croc, especially for the local people there that have to encounter it on a regular basis. Basically prehistory making a comeback.

      Interesting if true.
      Jim Corbett was a famous hunter of man eating tigers and leopards and claimed that besides injury / old age making the animal incapable of hunting proper prey, one of the biggest causes of maneating was outbreaks of disease resulting in poor burials, often dumping bodies into the river. Animals would scavange these and start to identify humans as a food source.

    Gustave killed a small hippo (not a youngster but an exceptionally small adult hippo) which is also very insane because I don’t even think an average crocodile can do this. I don't doubt that that there was (and possibly is) a big male crocodile named Gustave with the scars you describe, and it's not hard the believe that he was/is a maneater. However, it's REALLY hard to believe that any one crocodile could be responsible for ALL human attacks over a period of decades throughout the vast area claimed to be his home range. Also, while Gustave is pretty distinctive while he's basking, it's unlikely that anyone would get a good look at him while he's hunting.

    I don't buy this story about Gustave killing an adult hippo, unless it was pretty sick or already injured. As big as he was, he would still be half the size of an adult hippo, which is massively strong & massively aggressive with huge teeth. It's also perfectly at home in the water. If you disagree, knowing how crocodiles typically attack their prey, tell me how he takes down a full-size hippo. For starters, where does he grab it?

    • @johnanthonyp
      @johnanthonyp Рік тому

      There is film of him swimming by adult hippos and they did seem visibly intimidated by his sheer size and mass. I do agree however that the story of him killing a fully grown, healthy specimen may have been a bit of a fisherman's story on the part of the reporting ranger.
