The "Letter from Birmingham Jail", also known as the "Letter from Birmingham City Jail" and "The Negro Is Your Brother", is an open letter written on April 16, 1963, by Martin Luther King Jr.
Martin Luther King Jr. was an American Baptist minister and activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the civil rights movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968.

What a man. I am 60 years old. Grew up in Brooklyn NY . Always been a Christian, never did drugs, never committed crimes or knowingly harmed my neighbors. Graduated American University, R.O.T.C. graduate. Always played by the "rules". Yet I received the whip of racism and prejudice on my back and still carry the scars today. Many of my contemporaries did not survive. Jails, drugs, unemployment, destroyed families, separation. All black and Latino men reading me , I salute you. Peace.
It is truly heartbreaking to hear this and how relevant it still is. A powerful piece.
right; then imagine actually being black - and dealing with this society -
Amen so true!
@@topnetworkersgroup - America has come so very far and is one of the least racist nations on earth. ( Traveling outside the U.S. opens up some eyes real quick. ) The Deceiver will always sow lies to keep us divided and to destroy from within, and Evil will always seek to uproot any progress and righteousness with bitterness, resentment and unforgiving rage. There are great successes to embrace and celebrate, as much as we will always have things to work on and be careful about.

So often amazes and saddens me to hear these old speeches from over 50 years ago and everything is still relevant to today and the conversations I've had with many whites in these "better" times we live in in 2021.
58 years...
Times are better now than they were back then, however the work must continue as it's not perfect and never will, but people and society can always be better and we must continue building upon the work of those that came before us and one day the work will continue with those that come after us. Just like the great wall of china that took 2,000 years to fully complete spanning generations. So too is work towards a better world, we all must do our part building it.

i listen to this about once a month. It shows me how far African-Americans have came ( not far ) and how far we still have to go. I recommend reading and listening to this "Letter from a Birmingham Jail" to certain people who like to quote "the content of our character and not the color of our skin" line. Dr King was deep; you have to study more than just the "I Have a Dream" speech.
Amen
Just change African American part, the majority are not straight from Africa, the 1st generation was, then the 2nd generation are just known as American.
@@redwin1698 truth.. but not just known as Americans... we have huge challenges here in Canada too. I am at 45 minutes now.. love so much, but just heard "have acted in the faith that right defeated is stronger than evil triumphant" We can hope and work to faith and justice winning still.
MLK was the truth; he really did 'see' what was happening

Martin Luther King Jr. proves here, he was not only a great Orator, but also a great Writer. This is perhaps the greatest protest literature letter of the 20th century.
@Charles Micheaux, I agree 100%.
I find it interesting that with the replacement of a word or two, this letter fits perfectly in today's climate as well. It is timeless and brilliant.
@@farahgarcia6160 That is so true. Not much has changed. 😞
@@farahgarcia6160 I so agree with you--dear Farah Garcia!
@@CosmosFlow Beautifully stated my Friend.
A TRUE LYRICIST✊🏿 Coldest word play
This is still relevant in society today.
He was truly brilliant! And him being in places like jail in Birmingham, proves that he was braver than some of the other leaders that you think may be better than him. Some talked a good game but never went to the South and faced the devil eye to eye.
What other leaders are you referring to? FBA is a lineage. We have no leaders
He is "FREE AT LAST, THANK GOD ALMIGHTY, HE IS FREE AT LAST!".
Thank you for your love, work and sacrifice for humanity.Your endurance paved the way for us to have a better life today
Life is far from better, though. History is repeating itself.
Sadly, highly relevant today. I hope all Senators who are currently opposed to ensuring voting rights, review this letter before they cast their vote in the Senate on the legislation.
Yessssssssssss indeed

THE ENTIRETY IS great BUT if you don't have time at least listen consider

More cautious than courageous
For some reason at 21:38 it skips over the last half of the paragraph, but it shows it in the transcript/subtitles. Another video was missing the audio for this part too.
"Sometimes a law is just on its face and unjust in its application. [For instance, I have been arrested on a charge of parading without a permit. Now, there is nothing wrong in having an ordinance which requires a permit for a parade. But such an ordinance becomes unjust when it is used to maintain segregation and to deny citizens the First-Amendment privilege of peaceful assembly and protest.]"
This did not disappoint, it is filled with compassion, empathy, pain and understanding.
Every sentence is clear and on point, and it fell on so many ears that refused to listen.
While I have not finished it quite yet, I am struck by the consistent support of the disenfranchised and oppressed, wherever they are in the world, whoever they are.
He deserved better than the cruelty and violence done against him. Remember how he died, and hear what words that people have tried to silence.
I didn't know this existed I just was thinking about the letter from the Alabama jail , I read it several times in a publications and thought I could hear audio God bless dr. Martin Luther King!
His last name was “King” for a reason.
This King was incredible. What a will and a power . I want to have 1% of his thoughts and feelings. He was more in tune with his God like nature.
I see how far we have come and we must be honest to God.
A powerful annoited awesome great man of God may we learn to love others and love god from the heart
Iam a mentally challenged man no wife no kids 56 years old seen the bars of jail and unfairly judged the same God bless MLKJ As a man of God Jesus says you must forgive or I will not forgive you . God bless lets be real to God.

ELOQUENT, PURPOSEFUL, POWERFUL, AND TRUTHFUL ORATORY!!
If you must listen to a preacher, please let it be this one. 💯🎯❤
Still relevant, white moderates stand up for your brother and sisters in love. White Christians, now Christ has called you to speak up, stand up, and pay up, for those who are suffering. Let us build the body of truth and find new ways to enforce a powerful love that can restore humanity.
It skips at 3:43 where King says, "Never again can we afford to live with the narrow, provincial 'outside agitator' idea. Anyone who lives inside the United States can never be considered an outsider anywhere within its bounds."
I hate that parts of this are being censored
Nice and powerful and much needed hallelujah hallelujah praise king Jesus
I admire him because of his courage he had to make civil rights equal to every human being in America. Martin will always be remembered for eternity on Earth and God has gained a saint in heaven.
Amen glory glory hallelujah 🙏🏿
Not true!! He was speaking for Foundational Black Americans. His lineage… He wasn’t on no equal rights crap. That’s the lie schools like to tell. If you did your research, all other groups really hated Dr. King
@@theencourager8485No You do your research, and read your statement and figure out the flaws in your thinking.
Powerful.
Listening to this now in 2024 with rapt attention, I get why he drew crowds. It's sad that his words still ring true.
Dr. King will always be loved and respected by me and his eloquent speeches will be my guiding light when I am in despair💖✝️💔
We we’re HERE- Before
🍃Dr. King said: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only Light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only Love can do that…”
But, looking at the state of America and the entire World, it's glaringly clear that ~ We the People prefer darkness…
Let's end where I began, with Dr.King; “We must all learn to live together as brother & Sisters...’ or We shall perish together as Fools…”
The cool ting about it is, We get to choose… 😩May God help us, us all...🍃🙏🏾
Listening to this on MLK Jr. day. ❤
Same
Same. Just incredible. Actually for an English assignment. At least this proves something has moved forward.
bro was COOKING 🔥🔥🔥
Praise the man & his message
The toil of this man was never in vain. It had produced president Barack Obama. At first as a black man, who are you to be a president of the united states of America. I iterate that this man's effort has yielded a great benefit. RIP.❤❤❤
He knew what he was talking about for all times for years to come
Great video
This letter is shared with high schoolers; I would like to see it in the hands of middle schoolers and ultimately, the whole world as required reading as the days and times have only changed chronologically. As'e
This is simply one of the most powerful things I have ever heard
Just in case anyone is quickly searching for it:
The cut out audio at 30:35 is as follows:
“-As those of an extremist. I began thinking about the fact that I stand in the middle of two opposing forces in the Negro community“.
(more details in the main comment bellow this one)
The moderate piece is the most touching.
April 16TH,1963 Who Was Born On This Infamous Day
why does this skip so much?
Why are so many of these important words censored/skipped? This is wrong. Please fix it, don’t silence him any longer.
Does anyone know when this recording was made? How soon after after his release was it recorded?
I Thank God for this true Southern Black Man Of God
THANK YOU
Thank you for sharing
still relevant today
Smartest American to this date.
Integrated us into a burning house
This is so relevant today. Ministers in the church with no moral backbone or obligation to speak out against the in justice in society. I have a Minster in my church who is against student loan forgiveness for 42 million Americans. Majority of Americans don't have $400 for an emergency.
It is so sad that he got shot by someone he was such an good person to help peoples rights 😢
Doctor Martin Luther King Jr wanted to bring people together and get people to get to know each other and do things together to know what it is like to live together has one big family of the human race that we are all part of the same family with the same God that made everything all over the world and know one should have to live like that that I do not blame them for wanting it to stop in any way possible it is their God given right to do what they have to do and not have to tell you something that you should know on your own
How does he have a better mic in 1963 than I do in 2023
11:19 Paragraph 10
27:32 Paragraph 21
holy smokes that sounds just like him! amazing reading!
It IS him.
Duh, it is him 🙄

It's 2024 and I can't take certain classes because I'm not Native American! Maybe that's okay?

is this reading done by MLK or someone else?
Mlk himself
MLK
still walking in the footsteps of the prophet Isiah who excoriated and lambasted the cruel kings and complacent hypocrites at the alters
To show what was wrong with it and who was doing it nonviolent was us the black people not doing it that white people who were doing it to the black people we want to live in peace with the rest of the people in the world to help you understand how we feel
I might not agree with CRT, depending on the devil in the details. But I feel like Dr. King's sermons and philosophy ought to be taught as part and parcel of Patriotic education, and Character education, in America's schools. MORAL EDUCATION is important now more than ever. America has not had a better moral voice than Martin Luther King, Jr. By the way, he was a close friend of Billy Graham, perhaps closer than JFK.
Critical Race Theory is a field of sociology that has roots in MLK and his activism. The struggle of black Americans continues to this day, and working to address issues found in studies of critical race theory is a continuation of MLK's dream.
The manufactured outrage at CRT is a distraction from economic issues, and a way to silence voices like MLK's.

Four white moderates disliked this.
JESSE LEE PETERSON IS BETTER
Cap.
Jesse Peterson is a ignoramus! He doesn't know politics, Apogetics, or US domestic policy!! Just a Conservative apologist!!!
“No comparison, What value it is to enter a burning house” James Baldwin
The world knows not Jeffrey Lee Patterson but the world no MLK he was too intellectual for you bigot heathens but you don't meet the scripture God has told you the last shall be first and the first shall be last and you said what you have sold read the book of Joelle from yourself even
You shall reap what you have sowed
