    Good Video. I bought the WavLink Dual Bay Docking station for backup - then I figured I should clone my three system drives. I could not find the 'manual' and can't download it, so you saved me. I like Idiot guides in text too, so:
    To clone hard drive with WavLink USB 3 2 Bay Docking Station
    1 Disconnect USB Cable, turn off power
    2 Put Source and Target Drive in Station
    3 Turn on Power: Both sides should be illuminated
    4 Press Button until both sides Flash, Release
    5 Press Button again to start: 25% light should show up
    If you pause between steps (4) and (5) for more than a few seconds, the copy will not start.
    6 Sit back and wait for 2 TB drive to clone

      Mine has room for 2 - 3.5" drives, so it should work. Capacity likely should be either: Same to Same or Smaller to Larger....
      Not sure how Larger to Smaller would go or just not even start.....

    Hard Drive Duplicator Function
    HDD A----Source HDD HDD B----Target HDD
    1.Make sure there are no connection on the USB.
    2.Ensure the Power Switch on the rear is in the OFF Position and plugged in properly.
    2. Insert the HDD A in the rear near the power plug and insert the HDD B in the front.
    3.Offline clone is from HDD A to HDD B. Make sure your Main Drive is in HDD A and slave in HDD BThe capacity of HDD B must be equal or bigger than HDD A.
    4. Press and hold the offline clone button for 3 seconds, the LED indicator will light up. Then quickly press the offline clone button and the offline clone operation will start. Each LED represents 25% completion. It is only when every 25% of HDD A is offline clone to HDD B that such LED will remain constantly on. When offline clone operation is fully completed, all LEDs will constant on until the device is power off.

      @@jodyandmichelle1 : No need to create partitions. It does bit-by-bit cloning of the Source HDD, so you end up with an exact copy. It is all low-level disk cloning, so it doesn't know or care what partitions or file systems you have.

    Thank you so much, I have had the darn thing for over a year! now and been scared of sticking more than 1 HDD inside, for fear that it may start the clone process as soon as it detects 2 drives. Now I feel like can FINALLY USE IT AS DUAL BAY Docking knowing its not going to clone anything unless I hold the button down. which to many seems annoying, but you tell me when you have 2 HDDs in there and your pet press the button for a click. I am thankful it does not start with a mere 1-button press. I cant see my cat pressing the button till it blinks and then let go and press again. Ingenious.

      The darn thing is I think it's a decent product. It's most interesting that they don't have better reference material. There is a more complex way to use the clone that if I get around to it I'll make a video . It uses the computer so you can copy multiple drives onto 1 HDD. I have to get used to a program that copies the desktop for the demo.

    Yes I found out the same thing with unplugging the USB cable. The 1st time I used it the cable was plugged in. Subsequent times I had to unplug cable and not have it communicate with the PC at all. I was going to do a follow up vid to explain that.
    It seems that if the USB is connected to the PC it's using resources from the PC and the buttons on the front of the Wavlink won't engage. After USB is disconnected I could initiate the clone from the Wavlink. It's a bit finicky this device!

    You can run into trouble having your windows boot stuff on a GPT partition.. I like the speed of the SSD drives and the Reliability of the mechanical disk. This is why folks split there system to a SSD M2 or NVMe disk for there OS and a few programs they want to run fast. They use there bigger disk as storage and programs that do not need the speed. . Cloning is you have to clone equal or above but not smaller. It is easy if you do not change hardware in your computer. Remember you can void your os activation if you change a lot of hardware at one time and also the programs may have to be reactivated as well. Rule of thumb is clone 1st then test you programs. Then add new hardware like video cards and such. P.S. Learned this the hard way. I would not put windows on any drive bigger than 2TB due to the MBR stuff. Price 1TB drives are around $100 I got a 4TB drive for $45. Any drive over 2TB has no choice to be formatted to GPT unless you brake them up into smaller drives partitions like the cloner did. If you have to repair you new 3TB you will have a time due to it not being MBR.

    • @RayZaplatar

      It's great bc you can use the docking station as an external drive. Then you can open up the HD and drag/drop individual files and confirm that the copy was accurate. There is some software that will allow you to custom copy 1 sector on a HD. The Wavlink just copies everything. For example maybe you have a 5 TB HD you can use the docking station to copy multiple HD of a smaller capacity. But you must use different scopy software that will allow that. AOMEI is a free download that you can custom copy .

    I have tried several HD cloning software but disappointed at most of them.
    I had been using Acronis True Image. It seemed to work fine until my computer power supply went out and took out the motherboard.
    My tower computer has several removable racks so I can clone to one of 3 drives in rotation.
    After I had my new computer built with a new motherboard, processor, RAM and 4 gig video
    card I decided to clone it.
    After the cloning process was finished the monitor was flashing off and on twice a second. I found out that Acronis had trashed both the cloned disk and my drive “C”.
    I had used the FREE program called AOMEI Backer-up. This was before my computer died.
    After building my new computer I decided to buy the Pro version of AOMEI and use it.
    When I cloned my drive “C” the cloned drive would not boot up. The operating system, Windows 10 Pro would not boot up.
    Several engineer friends told me they use a stand-a-lone device called “Wavlink”. On their suggestions I purchased it. I have removable hard drives so I had to take the hard drives out of the mobile racks and put them into the Wavlink. My drive “C” is a 512gig drive which only has my programs on it. All my data is kept separate on two, two terabytes drives.
    The time it takes to clone my drive “C” takes about 20 minutes. The Wavlink really is worth the $35.

      AOMEI is pretty good software. It really allows the ability to copy only 1 partition of a lg drive.
      If you clone a HD I'd get a target disk that is the same size or slightly larger and don't use the Pc software just clone from the Wavelink hardware from the source disk to the target disk. That way there is no software issues that might not copy exactly. I like AOMEI when I need to copy a partition or if I have a really lg disk and I want to copy multiple disks on the the lg drive.
      Make sure you stay within the size limits of the HDD that windows will recognize. meaning you may have to create partitions so the disk can be read

    • @RayZaplatar
      @RayZaplatar  5 років тому

      It's going to depend on the size. Certainly a 4TB will take longer than a 1TB. It does take a long time though. I think I just let my 2TB copy all night. So I don't know the actual time as I was asleep. if it's stuck on 25% and never seems to move then restart

    We got one of these for work. We hooked up a 2TB ddrive that has only 84.2GB used on it. However, we bought a Samsung 860 Pro SSD and it refused them both. New SSD in target slot and old HDD in the Source. But the Source and Target LED would not go solid blue. They kept blinking. I am guessing it thought it wasn't able to do a large drive to small despite the fact the used space is less than 85GB and less than the 250GB of the target SSD. Thoughts?

    • @dwightvaughn4145
      @dwightvaughn4145 5 років тому

      Using the clone process, as noted before, is a bit by bit transfer. It has nothing to do with used vs. unused space on the drive. You would have to install the larger drive in a computer and use some other method for copying only the used space. Cloning is different.

    Thanks for all your help, one little question, ¿how it works when the ssd target disk is smaller than the source? ¿It reduces the partition? Or leaves part of the data without copying. Thanks!!

    • @RayZaplatar
      @RayZaplatar  5 років тому +1

      if the SSD is smaller than the target disk it should copy. However the Wavlink doesn't see that you created a partition on the target disk. It copies onto the target as if it is 1 partition . That said if you are coping an operating system like Win10 which automatically creates I think 3 partitions it will copy from the source disk the same amount of partitions. If you think you can take a 3TB source disk create 3 1TB partitions and copy onto a specific partition you can't do it. It doesn't see the partitions you created on the target disk.
      If you want to create partitions on a disk and copy specifically onto a specific partition then you have to mount that HD into your computer copy onto the desired partition. Then copy something else onto another partition . When you have it the way you like it take it out of the computer install onto the Wavlink and make a clone of that. It is a work around and I don't know how else to do it. Remember the wavlink is less than $40.00 so it's just not designed for advanced copy techniques.

    I agree with your sentiment but still found this confusing to follow. You must need two active computers to do this? One to track the cloning process and the second one containing the SSD drive you remove to clone?
    Can you clone your SSD drive direct from your computer to the SSD drive without taking the SSD drive out first?

    • @RayZaplatar
      @RayZaplatar  4 роки тому

      Wavelink has software that comes with the unit but I suggest not using it. I forget the details but sort of remember it crashed my computer or I had to uninstall it to turn on computer. I think for the price you are not going to get a real robust piece of software with the wavelink .
      In this video I removed my SSD which has Windows OS and copied it to a HDD so I'd have a back up copy. If you want to do interesting copying with drives in the computer I suggest using AOMEI . Their paid version has a lot of great tools that allow copying the entire disk or just a partition. I do have some vids on that software. Note I do not get anything from AOMEI.

    • @RayZaplatar

    This question is not about the cloning functionality, but rather if you can dock and mount two hard disks at the same time? For some reason I can only ever mount the Source hard disk in Windows or OSX. It doesn't even see the second hard disk. So is this really a "dual docking" unit?

    • @RayZaplatar
      @RayZaplatar  5 років тому +1

      YOU HAVE TO GO UNDER Disk Management in win10 . It will see the 2 drives then you mount the drives so you can open it's contents. It's a little tricky the way Disk Management brakes up the drives, even showing hidden partitions. You have to really pay attention as the drive will have many partitions that seem the same. Click on a partition and you can see which drives it's associated with. You have to be patient to figure it out. I wanted to do a video on that part but since UA-cam quit monetizing I sort of lot ambition.
      Once the drives are mounted they should now show up in Explorer and you can open , copy each drive and each partition So yes you can mount both drives and see the contents of the drive and each partition.
      There are clever ways to take a large drive 5TB use Disk Management and make it into smaller disks . So you can have 5 - 1TB drives each with it's own drive letter

    • @RayZaplatar
      @RayZaplatar  3 роки тому

      It would depend on what input TV has and if it can read a large HDD. I think more probable to use a dedicated PC that's hooked up to TV with the installed HDD. Then whatever you can open and watch on your PC you can output it to the TV. The TV has to be able to read what ever files ore on the HDD. THe PC will have the ability to read many different files.

    • @RayZaplatar
      @RayZaplatar  3 роки тому

      Depends on the file you're asking the TV to read. If the TV has the reader that can read the file you should be able to. It is best to have a designated PC connected to TV through HDMI and have that computer read the file . Use a PC as a media center. As you know even a DVD can't read all movie files unless it has the reader

      The device will make a complete copy of the original SSD . You can take out the original and install the clone and it will work. What I don't know is if windows will recognize that you installed the clone into a new and different computer. As Windows has been free for sometime I don't know if windows has security to prevent it. As you know tech companies are very good at protecting their property. None the less it's worth a try. The worst that can happen is you'll have a clone as a backup should the SSD fail

      Thanks for your post. Manual says target drive has to be larger (capacity) than the source drive. But thought same capacities would work. You answered my question. Thanks again.

    my 2tb drive has been flashing 100% for over 24 hours. Is it supposed to take this long?

      Are you going from a 2TB to a smaller SSD. It was doing that to me too.

    hi! stumbled on your video..i got the same wavlink - the instructions are kind of confusing at the end... it says when it's done cloning all the lights turn off.. but then at the end it says if all the blue lights are lit up, the cloning is done... So I'm not sure what is correct. should i wait until the all the lights are off on the device to know that the whole process is complete?

    • @RayZaplatar
      @RayZaplatar  6 років тому +2

      It's done when the front of the wavlink shows 100% status bar is lit and the light is steady. You see the line below the source and target lettering that shows the progression of the clone staring at 25%, 50%, 75% 100% When complete the blue light stops blinking and goes to a solid blue.
      I use microsoft disk management tool to mount the drive then I can open the files to confirm the copy/clone was successful. Depending on the size of your disk it is a slow process. You may have to run it during the night.
      Note when I use their software from the desktop interface sometimes it would just stop coping and I had to start over again.Taking another 8 hrs depending on disk size. Like you I am just a consumer and not affiliated with wavlink. I'll do a video using the software interface later.

    Is it possible to pull content off of a source drive to a usb drive thats no in the target slot or perhaps a folder on the desktop?

    • @RayZaplatar
      @RayZaplatar  6 років тому

      Yes but it's more complicated. You have to use the (assuming you're using Windows) the Disk Management Tool (right click lower left windows icon) launch Disk management tool. It will load Wavlink connected drive. It will show as different partitions so pay attention because it will also include your "C" or "D" drive partitions also. Then you should be able to go to file explorer and find the Drive and just drag and drop into or out of the HD.

    I just tried to clone a 50 GB HDD to a solid state drive doing exactly the same process as shown in the video. It ran through to 100% and stopped flashing. Now I have 2 hard drives and neither one will boot up in my laptop. When I plug in the USB cable to my other PC it gives me an error that the file or directory is corrupt. Any ideas?

    • @RayZaplatar
      @RayZaplatar  5 років тому

      Connect the usb cable to the wavlink . Mount the drives then open the drives to look at the content of the drives to see that it's all there. In windows go to disk managment tool and you should be able to mount or see both drives. Compare the contents
      Did you format the drive in the required NTSB or Fat32. Did the cloning maintain and copy the hidden partitions where windows resides? It should be the 0 drive that holds the OS.
      Work backwards and reinstall the original HD back into the computer then boot .
      Note that if you removed the original HD placed into the wavelink then copied onto a new drive . Did you remove the original HD reinstall into the computer. Make sure you've selected the correct boot device in the BIOS
      Good luck , it's tough troubleshooting computer errors.

    • @RayZaplatar
      @RayZaplatar  5 років тому

      Just thought of something. I had trouble coping the HD to a clone if the USB cable from the wavelink was connected to the computer. Disconnect the usb from the computer and use the clone device as a stand alone unit. After coping reinstall ,either the original or clone back into the computer. That's the only way I was able to get a proper copy that would work.

      @@RayZaplatar I did not reformat the new drive before cloning. Is that where I went wrong? Neither the new or the old HD will boot in the laptop. When I try to access the files on my other PC using the dock it says that the drive is corrupted on both drives (source and target). I have a feeling I am going to have to start from scratch on a Windows 10 install.

    After holding, it blinks, then you have to push it once more WHILE it is blinking. If you wait until it stops blinking then press, it doesn't work.

      it's a finicky device. I had to disconnect it from the usb to computer and run it strickly from the base. You have to play with it a bit but consider all options till you find one that works. It's been a while since I fooled with this but remember till I disconnected it from computer then it'll work. In order to get the wave link to mount on the computer you have to use Disk management or computer management in order to mount the device . Both programs are under the start window right click and scroll to the windows app. Hope this helps

    You did not show what happens when the cloning process is completed...does the 100% led blink? Does the 100% led turn solid?

    It's funny how the directions say it's complete when the percentage lights turn off. Then at the bottom of the instructions it says that it's complete when the percentage lights stay constant and not flashing...mmk.

      read back some of the previous responses.
      Disconnect the usb from the computer and copy only from the device. That is place the original and target into device. You have to hold the button down till it lights up then let it go.
