- A great way to improve the performance of your computer is to upgrade from your old mechanical hard drive to a SSD (Solid State Drive). However when upgrading the drive containing Windows (or any other operating system) it's nice to be able to keep all your old applications and files and not have to start from scratch and reinstall all your programs and copy over all your important files manually. The good news is there are Drive Cloning utilities out there like Acronis True Image that allow you to clone your old hard drive bit for bit so you can upgrade your OS drive and keep all your stuff just the way you had it. This video is designed to help beginners who have never done anything like this before download and install Acronis True Image, Clone their OS (Windows) drive and then switch the Boot Priority in their motherboard BIOS/UEFI. Get ready... you're about to not be a drive cloning noob any more. :)
If you need help installing a new hard drive or SSD (Solid State Drive) in your computer, either SATA or M.2 you can check out my previous video which will walk you through the process of installing, initializing and formatting a new drive here - • A Beginners Guide: Upg...

Hey @Maraksot78 ! I was wondering, because i was planning to do the same as you did in this video but from an sshd to an m.2 nvme ssd. when it's done cloned and the boot priority order is organized, how can i delete my other sshd to get more available space in this disk?
Its fake
@@olleplays1169 What's fake?
Used it as a Western Digital free aid, no purchase or information to Acronis was necessary.
Western Digital now provide a more basic free version of Acronis for use with WD drives. It does cloning, back-up, New Disk and drive cleaning and I'm using it right now to clone my WD HDD to a WD SSD at no charge.
Nice!!
I ordered 1 wb blue 1 tb too, which probably includes this software
For somebody that only delves into the innards of their computer on rare occasions, and then immediately forgets everything, you made the mystical, easy - thanks!
This tool will not work for the disk with bad sector, but aomei did.
This video was really helpful. I just cloned and swopped my original 128GB 90% full SSD c drive for a 1TB SSD. Everything works fine Thank you.
Aww man I wish I knew this before building my pc so I wouldn't have to litteraly copy paste all my files and reinstall all my programs.
Next time I know what to do.
Wakanda Forever.
Ha ha ha, sorry I didn't get this one finished sooner for ya. :D
I was sooo confused and scared about trying this but you definitely explained it perfectly thank you 😭👌
Dude! Your videos have been clear and easy to understand. Thank you! I managed to successfully install a new SSD (as I needed more storage space) and clone my copy of windows for the first time. #feelinghappy
Very helpful as I’ve had very little pc building experience I’ve used a lot of your videos to help me along the way. Every single one has been very helpful and worked each time
That's awesome man. So happy to hear my videos have helped you out so much. I wish you the very best my friend. Cheers! :)
Thanks for the easy to follow tutorial. Worked perfectly in my Dell Inspiron 5675 desktop. I had a 3TB HDD from 08/2015 and switched to a new 1 TB WD SN570 NVMe. I removed my HDD, restarted and the Dell recognized the NVMe as primary boot immediately, no issues. I began by using Macrium but it kept giving me errors (0 & 23) so I used Acronis (got it free because I had the WD drives) and it cloned in one take - approximately 30 minutes for approximately 250 GB.
I followed your steps but for the cloning tool I choose aomei and finally worked well, thank you
is it free?
Thanks for the content. Ive been wanting to do this for some time now. I also want to keep my mechanical drive for storage.
but this tool cannot let me clone my bad sector what to do
I use ao mei to clone it works nicely
The first pc I built started off with just a cheap AMD Athon 3000g with 8gbs of ram and a 500gb HDD. I have slowly upgraded all of my parts to an RTX 3070, Ryzen 5 3600x, and 16gb of fast ram. Despite these upgrades I was confused as to why my pc still had trouble loading games and took a while to get up and running and recently learned that storage has a big impact on performance. I just bought a 1tb M.2 drive and am excited to experience faster load times! Thanks for the video
I used to clone with acronis but for now I meet bugs and cannot clone, really upset
Exceptionally helpful. Definitely a channel to follow
Liked and subbed. Exactly what I was looking for man. Between this vid and your "new drive install" vid, I feel comfortabale that I can upgrade my boot drive. Thank you thank you thank you. Now to find an "upgrade Ram" vid on your channel. :)
Made my life so much easier. Thanks for the step by step!
You're welcome. Best of luck to you. :)
just come to this video to make sure that I made no mistake when clone with acronis, because it didn't work at all, or I will turn to another tool
Thank you, straight and to the point. I wish more videos were as easy to follow as this one. Well done!
SSDs are way faster, man. Thank you for the video, just what I needed to help with the SSD upgrade.
Thank you very much...good video...I have to do mine and did not know if it was complicated or not. Now I can do it with your information.
this video is very well made, you deserve more views
Thanks for checking out the video and for the very kind comment. Best of luck to you cloning your drive.
Cloning failed with Acronis but worked with Ao mei backupp, this one is better.
Is it free?
Great video, will be planning to upgrade to a SDD.
Nicely done! REALLY helped me out!!
Awesome, just what I was looking for!!
Excellent tutorial! Spoken in simple terms and easy to follow Acronis software. This western digital customer loves that you made the link for initializing (from your previous video) so readily available. Just upgraded from a 750 gig hdd to a 2tb ssd without a single hitch! My almost 10 year old Asus q500 has never been snappier! THANKS SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!
You're very welcome! Happy some of my videos helped you get through the process smoothly. Enjoy. :)
I order a wb blue sata ssd that includes 5 year license of this software and honestly this was the easiest cloner application I've ever seen!!!
I'll be glad to use it
Very well explained!!! Liked and subscribed!
Worked great! Thanks for posting!
Your video was great! Especially liked the indexing feature on scrolling through the timeline. Instead of the normal HDD to SSD, I tried SSD to HDD without success. I was trying to 'bounce' the clone from an NVMe to HDD back to ANOTHER NVMe because of single SSD capacity. The process was identical to yours but apparently these items did not transfer to the HDD: Boot, Page File, and Crash Dump. Only the Basic Data Partition transferred over. So I purchased an external NVMe enclosure today and will try again! Thanks.
It worked and was suspiciously easy! Thanks!
did you pay the 34.99?
Thanks. As a tip, consider buying a KLEVV SSD which comes with Acronis True Image 2018. I'm not affiliated to KLEVV. I just bought one. Thanks for the very clear video! I have subscribed!
Worked perfectly, thank you
Excellent video!
Brilliant set of videos. Just upgraded my SSD drive and didn’t mess up once (fingers crossed). Does my old SSD drive still have all the cloned data on it and if so how do I get rid of it? Just delete it all from windows???
Thank you!! Just what I was looking for!@
Thanks for this video!!
In many cases clone is done for the purpose of upgrading to bigger drive. In such case there will be additional steps needed to move unallocated partition and merge it with main boot partition.
Can you help me?
Nice video. Thanks.
Need to update the drive on my HP omen that i use for Light room this seems helpful
Hey bud, some friends of mine in the tech security industry recommended this video, as well Acronis and both totally delivered! Thank you so much for the simple walk-through. I’ll be sure to share with others who are looking to do the same sort of cloning.
What if I had a current m.2 drive and want to upgrade to another m.2 drive with a larger capacity? My current one is the boot disk that contains windows, how could I clone the drive and then remove it and put my new m.2 in the same spot on the motherboard?
Your videos are great
O am goin replace my local drive
this video was soo helpful just taken over an hour to go from source disk to destination though lol
Thanks for the guide! So after all the steps I can safely delete all the files from the old drive right?
Thank you so much!
thank you so much! made it very quick and problem free :)
did you pay the 34.99?

Clone your hard drive?
I hope this process is that easy .I will find out. I'm getting my bigger m.2 today .
Great video, does this work when upgrading ssds?
Hey, thank you for this tutorial.
I have a question, I'm currently planning to upgrade from Sata SSD to NVME SSD, and will follow this method for cloning into the new NVME.
My system is currently on Legacy. After upgrading to NVME, do I need to click on something to change it into UEFI??? or will UEFI be the default since it's NVME?
Keep up the good work man! Hoping for your response.
Honestly MS should allow us to clone our own drives
thankyou dudz!
excellent!!!
awesome thanks for this
Thanks great information
Novice Builder here your videos are very helpful
Hi, I already have an SSD card installed into my pc but I want one that's got more storage and faster, what can I go about doing to copy from an already used SSD to the new one
My laptop was so dang slow but since getting an ssd it freaking starts in seconds now! 😁
Couple questions: I am planning on doing this with a computer. It currently has a Hard Drive, and I am going to install a SSD M2. When doing the clone part, do I need to format the new SSD first, or will that automatically be done during the cloning process? Also, I plan on removing the old hard drive, do I still need to go into bios to change boot priority, or will the computer automatically choose the new SSD with that being the only option?
Great video.!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Question: i want to replace a hard drive to a ssd in as HP all in one desktop with usb 3.0 , can i clone the hard drive using the usb adapter to ssd 2.5? or that only work on laptops?
Thanks!!
What about if I want to only clone a partition? As I have a 1TB HDD thats partitioned however the new SSD is only 512GB so is there a way to only clone local disk (C:) as with both disk (C:) and (D:) combined is already more than 700GB
I just want to know how to convert a disk to gpt if i have files on it and i don't want to delete them, any tools recommend? I find aomei partition seems good to deal with it, whatever let's see.
Hey maraksot I stumbled apron your video about how to fix a mic that you released about a year ago but there's one thing I need help with great video btw, so my computer has the headphone jack in the front and the microphone jack in the back. So I just cant use a basic splitter, do you have any suggestions?
Is safe to delete files from the old bootable drive once they've been cloned and the priority has been set to the new drive?
I have a HP 19 all in one . I have an external sata cable but dose not recognize wd blue ssd when pluged into usb. it recognizes the old seagate , is there another trick to get it to show up?
Thank you! Great video!
I have a question!
I have a pc, i only have one slot and in that slot is a wd blue sn 570 and i bought a samsung SSD 980 1T NVMe.M.2, the question is how can i clone my disk? Thank you!
I installed new hard drive in my pc. At first it works well. I turn it off then turn it on again and I dont have a display anymore. And I made a boot usb with aomei backupper to boot it and clone my old one to another pc.
After I copy the OS into my new SSD and and change the boot order can I delete everything from my old SSD including the OS and still keep using it as a secondary storage?
love this detailed and so helpfull to me video!
Great explanation! Even Fuhrer coulndt say it better!!
Arconis has now replaced True Image with "Cyber Protect Home Office Essentials" and it behaves a little differently. I am getting stuck at a "what to exclude" step when trying to clone a 3TB HDD to a 1TB NVME SSD. The HDD only has 153GB of the 3TB as used space and the rest is 2.7TB of free space. It is trying to copy the free space, any easy idea on how to troubleshoot that?
I hope someone with experience will be able to answer this question from a newbie: my OS is on a 500gig m.2, & I just purchased a 1tb m.2. I'm going to clone onto a 1tb hdd, & change the boot drive to the hdd. So...once I swap out the old m.2 & replace it with the new one, do I make another clone onto it from the hdd, so I can format the hdd afterward?
I have a 500 gb SSD that my Windows operating system is on I have multiple external hard drives but I was thinking about upgrading my main 500gb SSD to a 2 TB SSD. Do you think it is better for me to replace the original system drive? or should I just simply add the other SSD into the mix? I plan to use this SSD for games and other things such as video files I want to edit. So I was thinking about moving one of my Long term storage hard drives to another position and put the two terabyte hard drive in the secondary position. Of course the other option is to simply replace the original system drive with the 2 tb SSD, looking into it it doesn't really seem that simple 😅.
Just wondering how this process will be affected with Windows 11 or Windows 10 machines that have a TPM chip enabled/encryption (most lickely bitlocker).
I have a hp envy 700_327c and I don’t know if it can run big games like gta or something any recommendations on what to upgrade and how?
What if I already have a ssd install and want to replace it but don't know how to transfer my data before removing it?
Just built a new pc can i take the old data drive straight out of my old one and use it in the new build? Its got a few steam games, blender files and game engine related programs on it (Unreal/Unity) Hoping to not have to reinstall everything again, Cheers
Hey my astro a10 headsets mic is not being picked up by my hp evny pc. The mic will not show up in the audio control panel and I have it where you can see all devices idk what to do plz help!
Does this process work the same way if I'm upgrading nvme to nvme??I made the mistake of buying a 256 and wanting to upgrade to a 1 TB.
i have an issue maybe someone can help with, I've successfully cloned my ssd onto my new samsung ssd using the data migration software they provide. The issue is that when i switch the boot priority, it doesn't return to it's normal state using the new ssd, but rather a set up page for windows. I used a usb to boot windows when I built my pc 3 years ago, but even with copying those files onto the new ssd it wouldn't boot nor when using said usb it wouldn't boot.
Just built a new pc can i take the old data drive straight out of my old one and use it in the new build? Its got a few steam games, blender files and game engine related programs on it. And I'm using AOMEI Partition Assistant which is a really nice tool! Hoping to not have to reinstall everything again, Cheers
So that I get this right. If I have a SATA and am upgrading to a larger one, I can connect that via USB and clone it that way and then just swap em out correct?
i already used acronis cloning in Sept, which worked, however, i used it this last weekend, it took half the time to clone, had to do it twice, as the first time just failed. second time, cloned, was told to reset pc and when everything came up, my drive, the cloned one, was blank.
Can you help me about my problem? I installed new hard drive in my pc. At first it works well. I turn it off then turn it on again and I dont have a display anymore.
I have Acronis True Image 2020. I tried to use it to clone my Laptop C drive to a Seagate 1 Tb portable drive (via a USB port). No trouble selecting the source and target drive, but TI did not present the screen asking how I intended to use the cloned drive, AND when I checked the Seagate drive "folder" no data or files are shown and it still shows full capacity. Any ideas?
Just wanna say I didn't have to buy acronis when I got my new drive from crucial. It apparently comes with the drive. The app will need to verify a crucial SSD is installed first though.
Can I delete everything that was on my old Windows C: HDD? Also the windows icon is still hovering over windows c: drive even after I changed bios order to ssd? Should I be worried? Sorry this is first time for me. Booted up fine and is running smoothly but I want to be able to use that he’d for storage.
So I plan to move the os to ssd so I can boot from it and save other data on hdd, I cloned successfully with partition assistant.
Hey, I saw your video "Why isn't My Headset Mic Working & How do I Fix it", I have and 1 - 2 splitter cable to connect both inputs in to my pc as my headset has only one 3.5 mm jack, and I've tried everything, but it still does not work, and instead to listen to me, the microphone listen to my computer, like when I open a UA-cam video the microphone is actually detecting those sound instead to my, basically it listens to my desktop.
When using Acronis to clone a W10 boot drive, is it really necessary to initialize a new drive first? I didn't, and Acronis copied the MBR automatically. While the cloned drive can be used as a data drive, it is not recognized as a boot drive, but this may be that my source drive for the cloning had corrupt boot information, which is what prompted me to clone a new drive. Another issue may be that the source drive is an HDD and the destination drive is an SSD, so I may need to toggle something in the BIOS in order for the cloned SSD to boot properly.
Selecting the option "To replace a disk on this machine", does the original source disk remain functional if you do not replace the disk? Thanks!
My PCB does not have 2 slots for m.2 I am trying to upgrade my 512 m.2 to a 1TB I have the 1TB plugs into the USB port and my 512 is in the computer in the program it does not populate the new m.2 on the clone page any help?
I purchased a new HP with 256gb SSD and I want to install the WD Blue 4Tb and went to clone the 256 using the Acronis program. When doing so I connected the WD SSD drive to the only SSD Port 2 available. When starting the clone disc function it showed the interface as RAID. Another video I watched on the process stated not to use an SATA port that is designated for RAID. Any direction would be greatly appreciated. And how can you tell if it is a RAID Sata port? I can't find that info anywhere.
Just this just clone your windows or does it copy over the system reserved partions too
is initializing the drive(new SSD {target disk}) necessari?
Hello,
What is a difference between "To Replace a disk on this machine" and "To use on another machine" ?
I want my new drive to be C: instead of the old drive. This is because everything wants to install to the C: drive. Will this process change the drive designation of the new bootable drive to C:? If not, how can I fix this. Thanks for the video. I have already used and have a legal copy of Acronis.
I download the free version of Acronis Crucial. It would not work. Wondering is both drive need to be purchased for Crucial? BTW great video!!
But this tool has no feature to convert a disk after cloning, I used aomei partition assistant to clone and convert disk after that.
