Those folks standing on the end- the officials- have years of training under their belts and know where they can stand and be safe. It’s certainly something not everyone can do as it does take a certain level of confidence and bravery. I officiate the throws and shot put is actually the easiest to get comfortable with. Discus and Javelin are the hardest as they can be more unpredictable. ya if you don't think olympians aren't juicing now you're crazy. It ain't like how it is here in America all across the globe. Some of these countries put everything in to their olympians, get the best of the best of the best.
The steroid era in baseball started in the late 80’s. Not a coincidence that they also broke the shot put Olympic record 5 times in 1 day in the late 80’s.
“ in one day the Olympic record had been smashed five times by three different people” and that folks is the first time steroids where seen at the Olympics
Actually that was the 1976 Olympics and the East German women's swimmers who won 10 of the 12 Gold Medals to every other country's surprise. That's when jokes started that East German women athletes were actually males.
Steroids had been around for decades and certainly none of the shotputters looks especially muscular. The discus throwing technique might have had something to do with it, in addition to more people competing in it. You'd also have to check the height and weight of the competitors compared to a decade earlier.
No ,the world record wasn’t broken there ,the first 23m throw was in May same year in Chania/Greece,where Timmermann reached 23,06m(his first world record was 22.62m in Berlin 22.9.1985,I saw that live)
The world record was NOT broken. Timmermann had set the world record earlier in 1988 at 23.06. His gold medal throw in Seoul was 22.47. If you look at the video of his winning throw in the sixth round, it falls sort of the red line on the ground which represents the world record distance. The folks who edit the content here should be a little more thorough in their research.
Aren't they talking about Olympic records... Ah I see, the video description is at odds with the actual contents of the video. In the video the Olympic records are clearly referred to.
I tried the shot put for the first time a few weeks ago. I'm 47 and haven't worked out any time recently so not close to as strong as if I was hitting the gym a few hours a week. First few were getting around 21 feet with a 16 pound ball. Interested to see how much I can gain on that. It's definitely tougher than it looks on TV.
But what's the problem in using a 16lb shot put for women. Women would still be competing against other women. A HEAVY BALL IS HEAVY FOR ALL WOMEN!!! So the results would still be the same.
There are no throws in the shot put (correct/original word is putt, as in golf). There are only puts (putts). In fact it is against the rules to throw the shot.
@Chris D'oulmeth well I know for a fact that not every record breaking athlete dopes. Where there is money there is doping but where the sport still has a level of amateurism to it you wont find anywhere as many cheats
Why does the Olympic channel even make a vid about that. Everybody knows that Barnes, Timmermann, Günthör and probably the rest of the field were doped.
Never heard of a shot put incident, but witnessed a discus knocking out a judge, a hammer hitting the guy from the back(kidney removed the following day) and there is a video on YT showing javeling hitting a jumper tip first.
there is no way to reduce the 'distance' in shotput. the 'distance' is the ground - its how they measure who throws the farthest, that's it. They reduce the weight in the shotput because it's a physiological fact that men have more upper body strength than women. Women can get more of an arc if the weight is lowered, which allows for better technique. Also, 16 lbs is hard to mold into a shotput small enough for women to grasp. Women's hands are also, again on the hole, smaller than men's so there's less of a grip to encapsulate the weight, so again, there must be modifications. Sure, women CAN throw the men's shotput (I have), especially at the Olympic level but, on the hole, it doesn't lend itself very well for good technique (or distance).
May have been a great watch at the time and these guys surely are top athletes in their field but, like most comments here already pointed out: Barnes and Timmermann at least are also well documented dopers. So save your plaudits.
Randy Barnes stated that he took drugs for his whole career. The East Germans had a doping program too as well as the soviets. And please don't think that the Americans or anybody didn't take drugs. Look at Griffith-Joyner or Carl Lewis. Just a stupid comment. It was a horrible time in sports between the 50's until like 2010, when the performances slowly got a little bit worse. Almost every athlete doped and many died (Tom Simpson, Joyner,...) or suffered from cancer.

Inqu'aanate no, women and men have anthropological differences, the men's shot put would be too big and thick for the average woman. Same reason the Olympic bars in weightlifting are thinner, shorter and 5kg lighter for women than they are for the men.
Alex Karakatsanis firstly, you clearly don’t know what anthropological means, morphological is the correct word for the sentence. Wether or not you injure yourself is all to do with technique, as someone who has done shot put before, they could just throw it less far. The bar being narrower does make sense because women usually have smaller hands but it should not weigh less, they could just lift less weight.
Inqu'aanate you are right thats the word I was going for. And I'm not sure it has to do with injury, it has to do with equalizing the conditions and comfort of throwing the shot put. As you said, smaller hands so they naturally need a smaller ball. And as for the weights, they lift way less weight even with the 15 kg bar but it's hard to make a bar smaller and thinner without decreasing the weight of it perhaps. (Maybe the same with the shot put?)
Inqu'aanate then they just do it to have an "even playing field" in terms of results and numbers. Shot put records are similar between men and women but ofcourse that's only possible with different weighted balls
I don't know why they have men's and women's teams. They should mix them. Maybe some sports you have no women, maybe some sports you have majority women.
Because no matter how much we all love equality, men and women ARE different. Mainly because of the difference between testosterone and estrogen. If the chemicals we're switched in then the physical dominance will likely switch as well.
Those people standing at the end of the throw got balls
I agree. They can get hit by the shotput or javelin. Scary.
They actually do when you think about it
