At one point he was the reigning Olympic Champion, World Champion and World Record Holder in a career plagued by injuries. I think he is definitely one of the greatest athletes in history in this event. Not to mention his technique, acceleration between each hurdles and race execution was just such a joy to watch. There is essentially no feasible way to ensure that PEDs are kept out of athletics. That goes for steroids, as well as all the other chemicals. Steroids are just one category of many such substances, most of which you and I don't even know the names. The olympic tests are a joke. It's all for show. The athletes need to be "clean" of certain things for about one month, and one month only. That's it. And even then, many athletes (usually the ones without millions of dollars and professional support teams behind them) are busted each year. The Olympics are big money. There's billions of dollars at stake. Do you think the IOC is going to throw all of that away, is going to burn its own wallet, by intentionally turning the Olympics into a series of steroid scandals every single season? No. Are national governments going to discredit and embarrass themselves by busting their own athletes? No. They are not going to do those things. For the institutions that govern professional athletics, there are huge incentives to look the other way. Then, let's just take a look at professional athletics over the last 20 years. Football is full of steroids. Soccer is full of steroids. Boxing is full of steroids. Baseball and competitive bicycling are full of steroids. Even CURLING has top competitors getting caught using PEDs. Why is this the case? Because the drugs WORK. They don't "help a little bit." They make a massive difference. Even if you dedicate your entire life to a sport, you will unlikely be anything better than an average professional, at best, without drug use. So, for the athletes, there is a huge incentive to take the risk. At top level athletics, there is an unspoken understanding: if you want to win, you have to compete. You have to use every means at your disposal to win, and that definitely includes drugs. Nobody natural is taking home first place, because to do you have to beat a field of world class competitors who are drugged 11 months out of the year, if not more. Drugs or no drugs, I'm happy to see a Chinese athlete do well. Western countries are controlled by banks and corporations that have brainwashed everyone with cultural marxism to accept being replaced by third world immigrants. At least the Chinese government is not doing that to its own citizens. So more power to them.

Liu Xiang inspired me to do hurdles in high school, and within the four years I have fallen many times, once during a race, and many times in practices. And my both knees have scars from the edge of the hurdles. I couldn't imagine how much more effort Liu has put in to become an Olympic champion.
I did hurdles, too. It is very unique to other sprinting events. I have a few scars on my knees as well. I got nervous a few times in the block and had to regain focus even more when another runner hit my hurdle or fell. It is quite a thrilling race and I loved it!

This video focused on the 2004 Athens games. Nobody expected Liu to win the gold. You could see from 4:43 to 4:51 he just ran around looking for somebody to celebrate with, and there's not a single person, before running into the judge.

I am a Tibetan dude who aspired to be a hurdler because of Liu. I happen to see his picture in one of the sports magazine when I was a kid( he won gold at athens), read article on him even though I couldn't understand everything that was written but still he caught my attention and admiration. I took hurdle in my tracks but wasn't able to make it through because it is the most demanding track in track and field. Your legs get overstretched and your career is finished.
I saw that one live, and though I'm not Chinese, my heart went out to the guy. He was willing to try, despite knowing the risk, and he prolly would have loved to at least finish the race, if not win, but that false start was a killer.
I am from Honduras and I love Xiu Xiang!! Sports and music will always serve as catalysts that unite humanity. Yes, sports is competitive, but I will cheer with pride and stand in solidarity with a great athlete of any color, ethnicity or country of origin.

I always loved to watch Lui compete in the hurdles. I felt so bad all the pressure he had for the 2008 Olympics and not being able to compete fully healthy. That had to take a tremendous toll on him.

I still remember watching the broadcast years ago when I was still a kid. He was in a practice area, struggling to make a jump, kicking a padded wall in frustration.
I began running hurdles in 6th grade (2006-2007 school year). I remember being so excited to watch him run in Beijing 2008. And his not being able to run in the final was heartbreaking to watch.
He won the gold in 2004 for a event dominated by the US and European that’s already crazy enough and broke the world record in 2 years time. This man is phenomenal 👍👍👍

I still remember reading a Q&A section on a newspaper way back in 2004, stating that Liu's gold medal was the most outstanding and interesting result of the whole event. I was a bit too little to understand it then, but later on, I knew that it was indeed an incredible win, not just for China, but for Asia as well.

I still remember reading a Q&A section on a newspaper way back in 2004, stating that Liu's gold medal was the most outstanding and interesting result of the whole event. I was a bit too little to understand it then, but later on, I knew that it was indeed an incredible win, not just for China, but for Asia as well.
