    Why not go with a Cat. engine.

      Mainly because the Cummins 6.7's were more easily available and parts are easier to find and considerably less expensive. This is especially so in Canada where CAT dealers mark up parts far beyond simple import and exchange fees.

    It was a wise idea to swap out the 12v71s they are pigs, you look at the logging industry they repower the off highway logging trucks with a Cat or Cummins or Series 60 Detroit the fuel savings pays for the engine swap in a year or less the 12v71s burn a lot of fuel. All they do is make diesel into noise. I'm not a biggest Cummins fan........ but there isn't much engine choices out there that is affordable. Parts for a 6.7 are world wide, the small displacement Cummins are the 350 Chevy engine they are everywhere and cheap to fix. I took care of maintenance of 11 excavators from 1 ton to 21 ton, the mini excavator fleet suffered from gas can-itis algae in diesel is a pain. Working on one machine I blew a big slug of shit out of the fuel line it was a good 4-5 inches long. Working on your own boat is the only way you can keep money in your pocket. The small boat yards will let boat owners work on their own boats. Travel lifts have made things really easy they can pluck you out of the water go put you somewhere on stands in the yard. Not like the days of the marine ways your pulled out tying up the ways you are paying through the nose. I remember when travel lifts came out everybody didn't believe in them now they can pick tug boats out of the water like bathtub toys.

      I definitely get all end of the spectrum on why I should/shouldn't have swapped the Detroit 12v-71's for the Cummins 6.7's. I also get a lot of recommendations of what I should have gone with rather than the 6.7's. I think a lot of it is because people have specific experience with one type of engine and are so sold on it that they feel its the best power for every application. I also feel that there is an enormous amount of people who fear electronic engines simply because they do not understand them or have heard of issues from early models. I am fortunate to have had decades of experience working on both types of engine and am making my decisions based on that.
      Fuel bug can be an issue for sure. Best thing to do is keep the water out. No water, no place for the algae to grow. If we happen to get bad fuel the polishing system should keep it at bay. If I am burning through filters too fast I can pump the bottom end of the tank into buckets after it has settled. There is always a way to solve problems.
      We are very fortunate to have a place like Steveston close by. It is always an amazing experience when we are here. The people are super friendly and if I ever need help its available. Could not recommend it more.

      @@OnboardTangaroa Some people are stuck in the stone age. The electronically controled diesels are far more efficient. You can tune them to what ever you want. I don't know what you have for cooling in your boat raw water with heat exchangers or keel cooling. The biggest issue is keeping marine engines at a constant temperature. Keel coolers is the best option. For you guys having extended range is a big plus. The 6.7 Cummins you can have them above idle doing hull speed. The old 12v71s don't do well at low rpm they start slobbering filling the breather boxes full of oil. Nothing good comes from that.

      Agreed. We are running oversize heat exchangers on these with 160 degree thermostats and also utilizing the Detroit raw water pumps albeit a bit underdriven. They should be able to maintain pretty cool temps consistently. We used to run our Detroits at 1000 RPM and I hated it. They would smoke like chimneys every time I cranked the rpm to burn out the stacks. It would eventually clear but it will be nice to have engines that are happy running at low loads where I don't ever have to worry about that. One more point for the Cummins.

      Cummings are great you'll like them I love 12v71 but they are outdated

    Apply honey to the scar...and it might still be able lessen the effects of scarring...might need to apply a bandage to it re it being sticking...but the results might impress you... if might be a little late in the healing process...but who knows... All the best...

    The bee model Cummings are non-refundable they see model has replaceable liners

      Nope, no paint on the hull massively reduces maintenance. Its not as pretty but thats fine with us! Thanks!

      Probably going to be a few years yet. Have a long way to go till then. We have also told ourselves that we will not be rushing this trip. If we want to just chill somewhere for a while then we will. We do plan on circumnavigating Australia once we get there though!

    Tangaroa does it have history in New Zealand as this is a Maori name

      The boat does not but Janis and I do. We spent quite a bit of time there as a new couple and it hold a very special place in our hearts. The boat will eventually make it there though. Thanks for watching!

    Don't think you will get 40% fuel savings. 20% maybe. I would have went mechanical myself. Bulletproof...

      Its tough to say. I cant really nail down an exact figure. I have heard of people gaining 25-30%. The only reason I went as far as 40% is that the fuel burn numbers with the Detroits at lower boat speeds (where we cruise) don't jive with power requirement calculations but they do at higher boat speeds. I am theorizing that the bsfc of the detroit at lower RPMs is quite poor. If so we could very well gain 40% at those speeds. I get a lot of comments about going mechanical for sure. Electronics aren't what they were 20 years ago. Things have come a long way and electronic engines have become plenty reliable. The 6.7's are pretty darn simple engines as are their electronic controls. I am confident that they will do exactly what I need them to. As for mechanical diesels being bulletproof, I have seen plenty of failed injectors and injection pumps as well over the years. Nothing is bulletproof, we just choose our poison.

    I am 66 years old and have never been able to roll my 'R's' either. When I was growing up I had a lot of kids make fun of me for that especially when I took Spanish in high school.

      It is something that can be challenging for sure. I took Spanish in high school as well and there were several that could not pick it up. I poke fun at Janis but its all in love.

    You guys are going international the world covered in 70 percent water always have a question what do you do in a emergency help isn't coming fast or if possible

      That's a great question. Janis and I are fairly calm when it comes to that kind of thing. Our first thing would be to assess the issue and determine if it is like threatening or if its fixable. As long as we are not caught in a major storm we will likely have time to fix problems and we will have spares onboard. If its life threatening we will have a substantial medical kit onboard as well as a good life raft if the ship is in danger. We do have Starlink on board which hopefully will be the first method of communication. We have a high frequency long range radio, spot gps transmitter, and epirb. We also have survival suits and a ditch bag onboard as well. Help may not arrive fast but as long are we are prepared and are able to survive the wait we should be fine. Thanks for watching!

      I really do not have enough experience with bio-diesel to comment. I do know the common rail diesel engines are extremely sensitive to fuel quality. Maybe that has something to do with it? I would not run any other fuels unless I did thorough looking into them.

    Correction B models do not have replaceable liners the sea models have replaceable liners

      When I said the Cummins engines did not have liners I did mean the ones we are using which are the B's. I am sorry if I was not clear with that.

    what undercoat you are using for the hull because mine didn work that good and looks like it started corroding in some places again

      We use Interprotect 2000E epoxy barrier coat. Last time we overcoated with Trilux 2 ablative paint but we are trying e-paint zo this time around. Hopefully it will work better.

      That's odd. The barrier coat on the bottom side of the hull has been phenomenal. The only place we had an issue was at the boot stripe because we prepped that area with too fine of sandpaper. Other that that we have been very happy. Be sure you don't have any stray electrical current happening. Hot marinas can be hard on aluminum boats without isolation transformers or galvanic isolators.

      no it wasn't in a marina, the only thing I can think of is that the boat yard put an earth wire to the hull because of the bad weather

    There is NO way those smaller engines will match the 12 vs. That boat is going to be under powered for sure. It's not going to go anywhere FAST.

      I respectfully disagree. That being said, it never goes anywhere fast anyway. Hull speed is 13kts and we cruise at 9.

      If you have a moment check out this boat. www.berthoninternational.com/yacht-sales-brokerage/fpb-motor-yachts/fpb-78/ The use twin Deere 6.8L 235HP engines and go EVERYWHERE as ocean cruisers. They are longer, wider, and heavier by a fair margin and cruise at 11kts with a max of 12.5kts. Its not that the Cummins are not enough engine, its that the Detroits are too much.

      But its nice to have alot of power when you need it. Plus you probably could just run one engine at a time to save fuel. Those two strokes are so smooth under power.​@OnboardTangaroa

      I do agree on that but I do want to be clear that the 12v-71's we had onboard were only rated at 450 HP intermittent duty. Definitely not super powerful. The Cummins 6.7's are rated up to 550 HP intermittent so definitely capable of matching what these Detroits put out. I have de-tuned these just for longevity. That aside, even with tuning them for 250HP that leaves 250HP of reserve power past what our hull speed would support anyhow. That will be plenty for any conditions we will find ourselves in. This choice was not made lightly. All factors were considered and these engines checked all of the boxes.

    Do you use a Baja filter for filling up?

      We built our own out of 6" pvc pipe with an end cap. Ours is 18" long and uses aquarium filters that are available from 50-2 microns. With a 20 micron filter it flows faster than the fuel pump at the fuel dock. We used a 1" shut off valve and 1" filler pipe.

      We do have one onboard but the practicality is a challenge when you have to take on 3000 gallons of fuel. We usually fill with the big fast nozzles when we can. Last time we filled up with a regular nozzle at Mill Bay Marina we had the fuel dock blocked up for 4 hours and that wasn't even a complete fill. I can't imagine how long we would take to fill up if we tried to put everything through the baja. Maybe I can figure a way to upsize the baja?
