- This is Gabe and I summiting Half Dome in Yosemite National Park on June 3, 2013 via the cables route. We began the hike at 7:25am from the Upper Pines campground and hiked to Half Dome via the Mist Trail to John Muir trail. Went from start to summit in about 4 hours 39 minutes. It was an ideal day to summit, about 80 degrees, windless and perfectly clear. I shot this on my GoProHD2 wearing a head-mount. Sound is somewhat muffled as I left the waterproof backing on from the previous days Merced river raft outing - oops. If you see yourself on the cables please comment. Actual cable ascent begins at 3:30.
My Grandfather, who is still alive and kicking at 100 yrs old. Put those cables up on half dome as well as helped to build the golf course at Yosemite. He always told us when we were growing up that he was proud of the work he did there as a young man part of the California Conservation Corps.

Creating one trail for people to use has a lot less impact than people picking their own path up the mountain. Keeps the traffic and potential litter to a smaller area.
Lynn Case just curious how they secured the cable stands into the rock and if they used an impact hammer.

Chris Barry Glad they put a quota system in with more awareness of what it requires. When we did it far too many people had no idea what they were getting in to and were paralyzed with fear, unable to move. We ended up going on the outside of the ropes just to get down because it was so clogged up.

Good job. Brings back a fine memory. Did this in 1992 with wife and 15 year old daughter and 78 year old stepfather. He got the cheers when he reached the top. That man was in good shape.

Live near Yosemite. My girlfriend has climbed it twice but it's not on my bucket list. This is why God created postcards.

If you're afraid of heights but still want to scale HD, the trick is to don't look up or down. Just take it one step at a time and focus on the few feet in front of you.

SuperJourneyer I tackled my fear of heights by watching. that's the limit of my vertigo. would never even dream of going there and trying this. I'd just put people in danger trying to rescue me when I froze up there not being able to ascend our descend. I know my limits and this is not one I'd do. would be extremely selfish to everyone else and those who had to rescue me off. common sense should always prevail.don't take on what you're incapable of doing.
I am more amazed of who drilled those holes and placed everything.

Amazement is on the other side on the face sir. The cables are a hike, not real climbing. From Royal Robins first ascent - the great adventure into the vertical unknown to modern day folk soloing (sans rope) THE FACE.
It was the Civilian Conservation Corp. better known as the CCC. It was FDR legislation, combating high unemployment during the Great Depression. It was a public work relief program that operated from 1933 to 1942 in the United States for unemployed, unmarried men. Originally for young men ages 18-25, it was eventually expanded to ages 17-28. This is the closest thing yet to actually hiking up Half Dome. You managed to capture the incredible scale and the great height. It's definitely not for anyone who is even a bit nervous about heights. Exceptional clarity.

ive been to yosemite . i hiked up angel falls all the way to north dome and back in one day . i would not do the halfdome cables without a harness and double clip system . thanks for sharing
It surprises me that there are not two lanes of cables. One for ascending and one for descending. There's always congestion at places like these, and particularly when you least want it. If a sudden thunderstorm appeared, everyone would have to get down the cables in a hurry, and a single person freezing or panicking in the middle of the cables could put many more in danger.

At 14:20 you're almost HALF done. The other half you need to go down. Those of us who hike know going down is twice as difficult. You'll never get me up there cos there is no way I would be able to get down. Ha

I am so grateful to have accidentally come across both your ascent and descent go pro videos of the cable route on Half Dome. In 1978 I hiked this trail, from the valley floor up and back, in one day. I was a 37 y/o woman hiking alone. Though I had seen photos of the cable route, when I came over Little Dome and saw what was before me I could barely believe it. Then I girded myself for the upward journey figuring I hadn't come all that way to turn around. It was one of the most memorable events of my life and I never expected to experience (or relive) it once again until I came across your UA-cam videos. Thank you, from my heart. Peace, BJ

My personal opinion is that anyone who attempts to climb the face of this rock should have to be physically anchored to the cable at all times thankfully to my knowledge this hasn't happened yet but eventually someone is going to suffer some serious problems while climbing the rock and fall taking out everyone below them .as they clause a chain reaction fall it could happen because of someone having poor health or suffering from heat related stress cramps dizziness ETC. The park service should make everyone that decides to climb the face use safety rigging to secure themselves to the cable and no one should ever be allowed to descend while anyone below is climbing up most people think that they are invincible while even the best equipment rock climbers suffer deaths eventhough trained climbers are following every safety precaution the main difference between the trained climbers and the people climbing up the face unprotected is the average person doesn't have the knowledge of safety it's going to be a sad day because of stupidity .

Yes. I never climbed it when I would have been able to, so I’m THRILLED to have a sense of what it might be like. Climbing down seems scarier and I’d LOVE to see footage of that, too.
I know my fear makes no sense, but part of my fear of such heights is the thought that I may jump. How crazy is that? It’s just an irrational fear that I have of heights.
I did this track on rollerskates in the winter of 1998 without savetyline and umbrella together with Angela Merkel.

I hiked it about four in the morning, and no safety clips, by moonlight. Was a rush to say the least. Cried tears of joy.

An important thing to bring is good pair of gloves. I see people in gardening gloves and there are a mound of ramshackle gloves at the base of sub-dome, but I would recommend a decent pair of climbing gloves. And a good traction on your shoes for the descent down to eliminate slipping.

Maybe with a rocket assisted backpack, and a hang glider to fly back to the tent..yep that 'll be the only way my butt ever gets there, or a helicopter and a parachute. My knees ach just watching!

Thank you for posting this. I have loved Yosemite since I went there the first time when I was 21. I live in Northern California and go there whenever I can. I used to not be afraid of heights, and I had a goal to climb this by the time I was age 50. Now I am almost 62 and after watching this, I know for sure I couldn't do it now. But thank you for taking me along. I wish the lens was not wide-angle, though, (not complaining, just an observation!) as it was difficult to get perspective when you looked off to the side and other times. I got a bit dizzy, LOL! I didn't plan to watch the entire 22-minute video, but I DID! Some of those large packs people are wearing really seem a danger to me. Thanks again, guys!
Made it to the base of el cap last September a whopping four hundred feet! Realized my knees, heart and lungs could no longer handle it. At 68 y/o that ship has sailed for me. Sad. Appreciate anyone who can film it. It’s quite a feat. Congrats to one and all for completing their dream. You are all rock stars I’m my book. I would consider it if Jimmy Chin or Alex Honnold took me up there. Lol
I used the cables way back in 1979. Back then all the vertical poles were very wobbly and I remember thinking, WTF???, Yosemite officials approved this wobbly death trap cable rig??? The vertical poles look firmly attached in this vid, thank God, I didn't think I was gonna make it back in 1979.
Don't be fooled! I did the cables last summer and there were very wobbly.
I've done Half Dome 7 times, never with the poles up or the 2x4's bolted in as steps. If the poles are loose it doesn't mater. It's the cables that are your safety, and they ain't coming out! They remove them during the winter so they don't completely deteriorate. THey usually put them up the week before Memorial Day. We always did our HD ascent the weekend before tourist season officially opened and it became a zoo.
It wasn't built by Yosemite officials. It was built during the depression, long before you, or your parents were born, most likely.
I was talking about the poles and 2x4s being removed. To my knowledge the cables may be up year round. I can't imagine trying to solo the route and attempting to lug up the weight of the cables.

This is one of the many things I want to do before I die.
+Randy R I've done the hike 3 x's. Twice I backpacked into Little Yosemite Valley, stayed overnight and then did Half Dome the next day. The first time was in 1976 when I started at Happy Isles. Then I did it again in 2013, but started at Glacier Point. Last year, in 2014, I started at Glacier Point, walked through Little Yosemite Valley up to Half Dome, then down the Mist Trail ~19 miles, in the same day. If I do it again, I'd do it in one day like I did in 2014. I'm 66 years old with atrial fibralation. Just 'do it'!
If you do it , it will have to happen before you die, but I know what you mean.

I am pleased to see many things in this video. One, the shot of people backing down the cables. I thought I was a big wuss for doing that in 1976 when I went up for the first time. The second was that big CRACK you had to get over near the very top. I had forgotten about that CRACK up until now, but I remember thinking how in God's green earth was I able going to make it up and over that thing (I did). Thanks for the memories, Gabe.

Well it’s the risk people take for doing this hike. You need a permit to do it so they know the risk. I want to do it but once I get in better shape.
One must be is great shape before attemping this and have a course in climbing. You must know what you're doing. I wouldn't take it lightly.
Having to wait on others while they take breaks or wanna turn around would drive me😭 . Like can you let me hurry up and climb up before my legs give in

most of the "real climbing" at yosemite is aid climbing anyway so again not real climbing when you are pulling your self up with a 3 to 1 technical advantage.

You need to be at the cables early when there is not many people, when there is it can take 2 hours
I have been up this several times. My kid first time at seven ( harness, rock/mountaineer stuff volunteering help). Before the kid could make it, empty cables up (we started early), outside cables down. They got the technique. Board, test step test step, and good to go for the next board. When it is busy it is only one cable you can use. When you get almost to the the top there is a sketchy big step up where the cables are not as much help. Then before you know it you are at the top. There is an amazing amount of room at the top.
Sketchiest part is 13:14, people really underestimate this part of the hike, when I did it last year i only used 1 carabiner and still felt so wobbly and dizzy from the massive size of everything around, definetely the most exposed point of Yosemite besides El Cap.
First problem with this? Backpacks. Leave the backpacks at the base. Not on the cable climb.

Amazing - I've been watching a few 'via ferrata' routes in Europe on UA-cam, but nothing is either as well shot, or as downright scary at this!!! Did you not turn round deliberately? Not sure I could take it if you did! I've paused it to take a breath at 9:55 as the next few steps look steeper than the rest. Wish me luck as I push through to the peak! This youtubenteering is frighteningly hard work!!
Are there ever falls on this route? Are the people usually ok, or do they just roll off the side?
Clachan a Choin people who fall of Half Dome usually die, but their are a few cases where people lived and just barely got away

The Poor Man’s Half Dome is North Dome. It’s not a very long hike from the Tioga Road and the beauty of North Dome is the spectacular view of Half Dome
Been to Half Dome more than 5 times, back in the days it was crowded and dangerous, no lottery or anything like that. The only fact is you MUST BE FIT, the hike alone to the base will drain most people, making it harder to be back on time to Curry Village before night time. Lottery or not, you must be fit or take your chances.
what was that guy doing sitting off to the right outside the cables at 22:30? Seems if he stumbled he would roll all the way down.

I'm kind of shocked they don't make is mandatory at this point. This video makes it look steeper than it is but plenty of people flat out lose their shit and panic.
From what I can see or observe on several similar clips of this climb,is that there should be two levels of cable.Cable is set far too high for shorter ppl or mainly women/children like myself who are only 5ft nothing!! It's possible,but far much harder using more energy to reach & pull up!
that looks so much easier than when i did it back in like 2005. there were so many people that there was a major bottleneck and you only got one cable because one cable was for ascending and the other was descending. on top of that people would freak out and sit down, blocking the inside of the cables, so you would have to hang outside of the cables to go around them. it took about 45 minutes to get up and 45 minutes to get down.
I see people your age and younger climb it, so YES. If you're motivated, careful and in shape, I think you can do it. Only you know your own abilities, but if you're youtubing stuff like this and into it, which I think you are, then I think it's a Go! And when you do, be sure to post Your Video. Good luck.
How do people do stuff like this like its just a stroll down the street?? There is no way in hell I could ever even think of trying this or most of the trails at yosemite I am guessing
Did this a couple of years ago and passed a guy with one arm, near the top of the cables as I was heading down. He was clipped on, which made sense, but I figured if he could do it I shouldn't crow too much myself!

Wow. I’ll bet. That would be impressive for anyone to climb it, but with only one arm? Cannot imagine. Moving the clip would be terrifying because you’d essentially be risking yourself each time. Your comment reminded me of when I walked my first (of 4) marathons. I had leg surgery 3 months earlier and when I was at about 21 miles, I was hitting the notorious wall (and thinking about quitting). I heard a tapping sound behind me that gradually got closer. Then a man, with one leg (the other amputated at hip level) came alongside me, walking with forearm crutches. He asked how I was doing. I was embarrassed to tell him I was struggling. He walked with me for about a mile. He said, “It’s like this. You pick ‘em up, you put ‘em down. It’s that simple”. He repeated that phrase over and over. He finally asked me if I was okay. I said, “absolutely. I’ve got it, because of you. I’ve never forgotten his words. They’ve carried me many times throughout my life. I only wish I could thank him now.

Mind you, I still think about that walk - the logistics were so tenuous that allowed me to do it. If truth be told, it was only because the rangers were on strike that I could because my permit was lent to me by someone else I met the day before!

I'm in pretty good shape, I guess. I didn't do anything special to prepare, just rode my bike & play tennis a couple of times/week. It's an ~18 mile hike r/t with an elevation climb of 4800'. Starts out at 4,000' so you need to be in enough shape to do that. The cables require a bit of upper body strength as you are effectively pulling yourself up. I recommend getting acclimated to the altitude, do some cardio, build leg strength & you'll be fine. Take lots of water, start early & take breaks

from start to summit 4:39. r/t looking at 10-11 hours. time at the top and easy pace on the way down. start early to beat the heat - think we aim for 6:30-7am on trail hiking from the valley floor. sun will be out so you'll have long day, but start early.
