BMW MECHANICAL CRUISE CONTROL FIGHTS BACK

- If you have a BMW made in the 80's 90's and 00's you probably have the old mechanical cruise control - that covers the E28, E31, E32, E34, E36, E38 and E39! These have a couple of foibles that may cause it to stick ON (a bit dangerous) or just let go whenever it feels like it (annoying)
This video explains how the older system works, what goes wrong with it, and how to fix it

Timm, you are responsible for keeping a lot of older BMWs on the road. Keep it up.
Very kond of you!
Only just found your channel, spent all morning watching multiple of your videos :')
Great, I've been looking for info on this! The cruise control on my 540i keeps deactivating itself. Thanks, Timm!
My pleasure!
I've had this problem on my 97 540i for a good while now. Watching with interest.
Thanks!
18:09 ... . I feel your pain, Tim.
The standard of driving is going quickly down hill!
Loved the extra section at the end Tim. I’ve got a E63 630i and am genuinely struggling to find any other car I would replace it with. I’ve completed all the proactive maintenance jobs, and will keep servicing every 5k, but even at 113k miles, the car feels like it will last forever! Keep up the great content Tim!
Thanks! Yes, they will last for years if you look after them
Excellent video
Thank you very much!
Another interesting video, Awesome .
Glad you enjoyed it Mark!
Beautiful car sir....sooo funny at the end 😂
Thanks, all good fun!
Hi Timm, lots of great content for this nice era of BMW cars on your channel!
I'm still driving my first car for 16 years since I turned 18 - an e39 523i.
It periodically switches off cruise control (not just disengages, but the green light also goes out) and I can use it again after shutting off the ignition. It's been doing it for years but it's getting more frequent. Do you have an idea what could cause this? I had multiple other is issues during this time, so I had to replace wheelspeed sensors etc. At the moment, INPA and I don't think there are (other) issues. There must be a few criteria when it decides its unsafe to use and deactivate.
Kind regards from Germany!
Hi Timm, Love your vids and the effort you put and all the deatil you cover.
I have a 1995 E38 740iL (Japanese Specifications) and have been having some trouble with the cruise control. I turn the system on and set it, and it holds for about 10 seconds and then turns itself off automatically. I can then feel the accelerator snap back onto my foot. The whole cruise control system shuts off until I restart the car and then try again, but to no change in outcome.
What do you reckon I do to find what's the problem and fix it? If its the actuator, do you reckon I should get it repaired or replaced?
into the bmw executive lane 😅 love it
Well, you have to don't you!
So far my e34cruise control has worked very well. And I’m very grateful. On an unrelated note, would you be willing to do a video on the M60 secondary air system and how to find used pumps?
There's a VW replacement, I think it is a sticky post on the E38 section of bimmerforums.com
Hi Timm! Your cars are in amazing condition! I really enjoy your videos! As these cars are getting older what do you predict for them in the future? Difficulty getting parts? Electrical issues? What about style? Would you ever consider moving into a newer 650i with the twin turbos?
Thanks Adam - and yes, I'll be going for the twin-turbo 650i next - more power!
Hello Timm,i have an question for you, hope you can answer me on this. i have an 645ci. My car is «stalling» when i kickdown. Can it be the traction control on the winter tyres? Keep the good work, love your videos and information. ps,k love my BMW 645ci. 😊
Tricky one that as I am not sure what you mean by stalling. If you mean there is hesitation, then it could be many things!
Hello Timm, I appreciate Your videos. I have recently bought my very own 8-series, finally. Could You please share the parameters of the rim setup You have on this video (wheel model, sizes, ET, etc.)? I'd be very grateful. Thanks in advance.
Thanks! They are 18" Rondell 58's, not made any more although half the E31's in the UK are fitted with them. 10.5J at the back and 9.5J at the front with 15mm offset, they need hub-centric spacers and rings as they have a 74.2mm bore. @@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation Thank You very much. Now I know where to start.
Hi Timm this is Alvin your number one fan. I have a question, I change my oil every 2 thousand miles.
Do I still need to use, oil seal conditioning stuff.
My 2005 645ci has 42,000 miles, I don't have any oil leaks at this time.
Timm I really need your help on this question.
Again should I be using a conditioner. 🤔🤔🤔
ALVIN! Unless you have oil leaks or are burning oil then don't bother with the additives!
@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation Timm I was thinking about using it For preventive maintenance and to keep the rubber seals soft.
@@alvintobe5566 It will not do any harm Alvin - and might do some good my friend!
Interesting.
Glad you think so!
Timm, can you update the3 year old vid on the 6 series values please , mine has done 99670 miles, should I sell or keep!
I'm doing it this week!
Hey Tim
I’m located in the US and I have a 1992 BMW E31 that’s having a weird issue that I can’t figure out ( along with multiple mechanics ). Would love to run it by you to see if you can point in the right direction. Any way I can contact you with my issues. ?
Yes, on bimmerforums.co.uk
Hi I’m currently experiencing the same issue too I recently bought a 2005 X5 4.4I v8 from a private seller he says the vehicle has been sitting for 5-6yrs here in the states where we have winters and summers the guy also said he had no major issues with the vehicle other than just replacing the brake line’s rotors and bass I recently noticed that the temperature gage shot all the way to red Making me think it’s a blown head gasket so I decided to replace the thermostat/I’m in the process of replacing the water pump also but since I just watch your video about the similar issue I’m really relieved 😌 😮💨that it’s not the head gasket now I have a question last wkend I try replacing the rear passenger side and driver side rotor and I’m having a problem getting the damn rotors off what do you think might be the issue do you think it’s the drum brakes needs to be adjusted a little so it would be easier to take off ?
You have to turn the adjusters inside the wheel - here's how: www.meeknet.co.uk/E32/Brakes/Index.htm
@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation thank you today I was able to take off the rotor on the passenger side but the driver side is the side I’m going to adjust the adjuster’s and see
Wish me luck 😊
Hi Timm, BMW recently quoted me £300 to replace the driver and passenger door seals (without labour) for my 2008 E63 630i coupe. Is there a cheap easy way for me to donit myself? The car has the issue of water pooling in the rear footwells of which I removed the carpet and found it to be coming in the doors after using your other videos to diagnose the issue!
Not easy that's for sure!
If I whip out the actuator unit and put in a new one (assuming there is a broken tooth but will now check brake bulbs), are there any programming implications?
No, it's as dumb as it gets!
I finally got a replacement actuator today so will see if it solves the issue. I have to check my rear fog lights as I'm getting a warning about them (don't think I've ever used them) but don't that's the issue as the cruise control went kaput before that error came up. On another matter, I rewatched your excellent video on timing chain guides and now I'm thinking I'll change the side tensioner as a precautionary measure. Car has 365000km and makes no noises on start up. Sound like a good idea Timm? You rock with these videos, thank you.
What is the cable for just before the throttlebody?
It's the secondary throttle for ASC+T - all explained here: ua-cam.com/video/W_bbKxFBKqA/v-deo.html
