I can confirm as a 15 year old I watched Griffin vs Bonner 1 just flipping through the channel and after round 1 I called my best friend and told him he had to watch it.
My earliest mma memory was my dad having his buddies over to watch wanderlei knee the shit outta rampage when i was like 6 it was glorious

That's funny, I was in the Army from 2001 to 2004 up in Alaska, so I missed so much tv/movies/sports just from being busy, the time difference and lack of the modern internet. So the first thing I saw of Zuffa's UFC (i watched UFC 1-4 on VHS tapes in the 90s) was Diego Sanchez on TUF telling someone (can't remember who now) that he had a "potty mouth" and he was going to shut it for him lol. I was like, "who's this weirdo... holy shit he bodied that dude!" I started watching and then that Forest/Bonner fight was on... I was more impressed with their heart than their skill, but that finale got me hooked again.

Punk is easily the biggest embarrassment in UFC history. The guy lied about his karate, Muay Thai, BJJ background, he clearly never took it seriously, even though he trained at Rufussport. That's proof that you can train at a good school, and it doesn't mean you will be great. Punk had terrible head and foot movement, atrocious hand placement. And he's lucky that Mike Jackson didn't slam him into a hospital stay when punk pulled the Flying Koala in the second round😂. Punks own bjj coach said he was getting submitted by white belts right before the Mickey Gall fight. Dude leapfrogged other fighters who live the grind, and got paid 500k to make a fool out of himself. And if he had any skill, there would be videos of him competing in tournaments, and at least, surviving. Punk knew he wasn't tough or a competent fighter, it was just about the money😂

Dude was like 40 when he fought, and was already riddled with injuries throughout his wrestling career. When I saw he was fighting I just shook my head because I knew he was gonna get absolutely slaughtered out there 😂

I made the comment before realizing the context of the video referred to massive/all time fights. Yes Jan v Magomed was booked with title intentions, and was a great fight, but the under the radar notoriety attached to it based on the result has always been strange to me. It’s like both guys got immediately dismissed, which the division briefly suffered for. Hope that explains things 😎

Just one thing I wanted to nitpick.
15:02 when you say “I don’t recall ever [calling anybody] to tune into a fight”
I heavily disagree with that sentiment in regards to that Ultimate Fighter finale match between Stephan Bonnar and Forrest.
I was in middle school calling my friends who were kinda watching The Ultimate Fighter series (or at least aware of it) and even my sister and her fiancé called ME to tell me about what was unfolding on Spike TV.
It was a great memory for me as a kid because all of a sudden all my friends and family and their friends could see why I was into MMA and UFC and K1 and PRIDE during that time.
I remember going to martial arts the next day and hearing my Sensei and the other black belts talking about how incredible the fight was (they are all PRIDE core fans) and how they got phoned by friends to ask if they saw what was going on. My Sensei thought Bonnar won but he also said “really though, it didn’t matter. It was so fun to watch.”
I know I’m only one case/scenario but if I experienced that firsthand, and there are numbers in viewership spiking during and after that fight to back it up, and that we know human behavior is rather predictable and non-unique (as in if I did that, then I couldn’t have been the only ones), then for sure I wasn’t the only who picked up the to tell my friends to flip their channels over to the Forrest vs Bonnar fight.
I know Joe and Dana are charismatic to a huge fault in sometimes overselling a fight or hyperbolically retelling old stories.
But their recount of what happened that night is one of the few times I can say “yeah, that’s fucking exactly how that felt and happened that night.”
It was so awesome and magical.

Mighty mouse was done dirty. He was the best in ufc history. They just never promoted him. UFC should have put more effort into promoting him. His fights were fantastic

I saw Griffin vs Bonner live on tv too and that didn’t disappoint one bit.
Even though the superfights didn't have a guaranteed winner, i was fascinated...regardless if there were minutes of catching breath, locking eachother up. Didn't matter to me - it was still 2 absolute killers who might destroy the other at any moment. And, i imagined myself in the same situation and it was interesting what happens locking up and then exploding out...
