The monopoly that the pga have in cahoots with major broadcasting networks is a key reason why liv golf is good competion for them. To make it free watch will be a major factor. The prize money on offer is miles more lucrative for golfers. The media that just ho into the press conferences that don't care about the golf been played but rather the people behind the organisation just shows that they are scared that they will start losing revenues

Good on you Simon for giving it an honest chance! GolfWRX is in partnership with the PGA, so the pro LIV posts there are censored and biased.

I think LIVgolf has raised the topic of 'sportswashing' once again and all it has proven is that everyone has a price. Whether its the group of players who have signed up to this, or AJ and Usik signing up to fight in Saudi for £50M.

Sportwashing is a term the media have created in order to create a narrative. How many innocent Afghans get killed by US drones every year? Thanks to wikileaks we know as the media wont mention it. Surely worse overall

I was there on the Saturday and to be honest it was fine. No massive crowds all the time around the course so you could easily get a good view of everyone at some point. Shotgun start meant you could float around the course without worrying about missing anyone. Still got seats in a couple of the pop up stands as people would come and go frequently rather than camp out all day.
All in all a very nice day out.
Only issue was water, someone mentioned in another comment about no water taps and towards the latter part of the golf everywhere had run out of water and soft drinks

1 of my fav things about golf is it's class and the fact it is a gentlemen's game , LIV has taken the part of the game and removed it Completely.
I do think LIV has a big Avenue with doing so and I think it becoming more in tune with UA-camrs and playing with them and allowing them in on the plans is where their gonna be more successful.

the queue for the bar at the far end of the course was ridiculous. That's the part of the course you see at about the 4-5 minute mark which is the furthest place from the entrance. Yes, it was very hard to get around the course. There was no water tap anywhere which we were made to believe there would be
That said the stands were good, we had a good spot on the 18th for a while and there were some places where you could get a good view. The stuff in the fan zone was good too. A good event considering it was their first. Maybe a different venue next year as the experience at the Belfry was better especially in terms of amenities, just less famous players.

I watched some of it, really enjoyed it! Feels like a BDO and PDC darts moment in golf. Being young in the late 80s I could see all my golf stars regularly in the UK... The n more tournaments in Europe to 'grow the game' then the best moved to the PGA tour which 'grew the game'. How nice would it be if the winner won 2 million instead of 4 and LIV bought one of the many municipal courses here the council keep closing and ran it subsidised, then did something similar in every country they went to? As for the source of the money? We're quite keen for the same country to turn the taps on the oil wider so the fuel price comes down...we're not quite so vocal on the countries where the lithium gets mined for our batteries, diamonds for our rings....I could go on!

The sportsmanship and respect they showed each other shows what golf is about for these players. Motivated by titles nothing else. Shout out to the first female winner on the dp tour as well. I didn't even know you could watch it anywhere until Sunday when a mate told me it was streamed on youtube and FB. Considering I follow golf I'm surprised that info hadn't managed to reach me. I wasn't actively searching for it more than checking if any of the TV channels had bought the rights for it. Apart from that I just think it would have been a hell of a lot more productive if they had poured that money into the DP world tour instead and created a proper challenger to the PGA tour. Now that would have put the cat among the pigeons for real.

I think you’ll find there was a lot of younger people there because ticket sales were so bad they gave away most of the tickets for free.
Shotgun starts are not going to last long. Courses are designed to be played in order so that holes provide jeopardy and relief at certain points of a round usually ending in a crescendo towards the 17 and 18 holes. Is anyone really interested in a tournament that ends on the 9th at the old course?

I watched the Friday and Saturday coverage and I thought it was well organised but I found the shot gun start and the "totem pole" scoring graphics a little differcult to follow. Sport competition is built on going through a tough journey to get to the top. This isn’t the top, it’s just easy money. I can’t see myself getting excited over watching someone win one of these tournaments. As a matter of fact it pisses me off that the sport has sunk so low. It used to intrigue me on how difficult this sport is to get to the top. That is what sport is about, after all.

In 1990 BT [Before Tiger] most PGA events were thinly crowded. In fact, in the 1970's-80's, you not only walked along with your fav pros, you had no restrictions of any importance. Even the snacks and drinks were modestly priced. The only exception I experienced was when Arnie's Army was on the march, surrounding holes, lining fairways, grinning with delight that implied that the fan gained some psychic power just by seeing the King. There were no, or few, ropes to stay behind. I do not think there were any hospitality tents, or a few. The driving range was nearly abandoned by fans, while the putting greens had a regular crowd of beer and cocktail kibitzers muttering how this or that stroke was in need of their advice. Casual, that's what I would say. Relaxed. Plus, this was before the big money, so the pros looked very tough, knowing that they had to at least make expenses and pay off side bets. You saw 'home-made' swings (all swings are home-made, in the end) and the golf commentators were absent, thank the Lord. No Trackman [Trackmen?], no ProV1, metal spikes (still some on tour), a real grind. You have no idea what a marathon 4 days of golf is when your purposes nearly excludes the notion of having fun. Thank heavens for alcohol. One other point: the LPGA events were so poorly attended that people walked along with the ladies, especially when they were shapely. And like today, they could play so well it was shocking to a newbie like myself.
Actually, it pleased me that you did this piece, because I realize how much the fan is reduced too an ass and a lout yelling "GITINDUHHOLE!!" The crowds at majors are massive and move like frightened hoards of reindeer, the costs of tickets are foul, the celebrity spectators are not just one of us golfers, but are sequestered in tents and surrounded by bum-kissing hustlers, not subtle in their kissing. Parking is a nightmare, and stepping outside the ropes can earn an impolite rebuke from a tired 'volunteer' who attends free but pays for his shirt, slacks, and cap.I know. When I was an Olympic Club member, I volunteered and voila! I got the best assignment: the backup Parking Lot, one quarter mile from the Lake Course. All day. No 'Quiet Please' paddle for me! Just pretentious automobiles and enthusiastic spectators - enthusiastic the first, maybe the second day.
Apologies in advance for rambling on. I don't think LIV [54 in Roman Numerals] intended to make their tournaments as spectator friendly as they did, although they did include many playful circus-y (my word) things for the fan. But, as you said, you can watch the invisible players (only ranked 120, 75, 55, etc. in the world) show you golf you may never have imagined such a 'lowly' player to play! In fact, with the payouts, even these men who usually have to count their pennies are in a pleasant enough mood and won't have you thrown out if you get too familiar or even cause the player distraction. What the hell! It's 'only a game,' unless you have to earn you living from it.

Loved it. Only watched on UA-cam but the concept is bang on. Both the P.G.A and the R&A need to think this one out very carefully or they could well be the losers. Bath Man is correct it is a exhibition and there's nothing wrong with that. Take another "sport" darts it has been transformed by a commercial entrepreneur into virtually a world wide event filling the largest arenas in the world it was even held at Madison Square Garden last week. The top end of golf has changed and the players are now as much entertainers as sportsmen (not the same for women yet but that's another thing) On the commercial side there is a untold number of people around the world who can access this event for free, embrace the events and promote the sport to new players and viewers.

I think its great for the game of golf. It brought in a new, younger, less fusty audience which is what the game is crying out for.
The vibe was fun, and with Bryson now signed up, the PGA Tour will be worried. They should have been more accepting of this tour as it is basically an exhibition invitational series, and can co-exist with the other tours without any problem.
More players will jump ship, and as for the outrage about Saudi money, sport and business is already normalised between the West and Saudi, so selective outrage about golf shows itself to be what it really is - a fearful PGA Tour losing many of its top stars.
    Long may it LIV!

So, how do you join the LIV Tour? Is there Monday Qualifying? Is there a junior league, where you can win and then promote yourself? Oh, you can win in the Majors and The PGA Tour or European Tour first? That seems to be the way. But those tours actually make money and make a profit, and allegedly give to charities. LIV just puts out ridiculous amounts of money without ever hoping to recoup that. Why? Nothing is completely free. The price for this LIV tour is not really known yet IMO, and some unexpected events may come from this.

LivGolf won't invest anything into the game for juniors and amateur. Just paying huge sums to pros who are at the end of their careers or in a slump in form. Like Graeme McDowell getting a half million to finish in top 10. It's just a pay day for them. At least the PGA tour has players at the top of their form and some finished last night in the Canadian Open.

BUT, if LIV really want to take over then they should.do two things, firstly make the format mixed with a simultaneous mens and womens tournatment happeing with equal prize money and a mixed team format. That will make it genuinelly different to the other tours, and basically mean the lpga ceases to be the place where women play as the prize money is so poor. Secondly offer the tv coverage up for free to anyone that wants to show it. That will mean every channel with aspirations to show sport will show it. Sky sports charging for the pga will suddenly look like an expensive option.

@Tony no it isnt a business. The saudi government make over one billion pounds a day from oil. They are spending pocket change on a small golf tour. The money is utterly irrelevant and they are not attempting to make a profit. It is PR (which i am not saying it good or bad) and so it makes no difference at all what they pay. Besides, the prize money on offer is tiny compared to what some players get in advance. So it is many things, but it is absolutely not a business.

Exactly, I'm 50 and back in the 80s 90s you could see the top players in the world at UK events, but then tiger came on the scene and the PGA became the go to tour, because of prize money available, most European players of any quality either go straight there or when their playing credentials allow them jump over to America straight away. So to then come out saying its not about money is hogwash, this is why the pga is so frightened about what the outcome of this will be, they destroyed the european tour, making it a feeder circuit, or a 2nd tier tour, not a complementary tour you could play between like back in the day.

I think the inherent lack of prestige/legacy stakes makes me (and many others) less interested and that's going to be an issue for LIV. I am, however, kind of rooting for it because I think the criticism for the players has been unwarranted.
As for the detractors... We've seen statements from PGA officials, players, fans, etc. that seem rather critical of the players choosing LIV over the PGA Tour, unhappy that a desire for money is driving the shift. I think that point has been adequately addressed as an equal number of people seems to agree that money is a reasonable decision point to accept a new job for.
What I don't think has been stated enough is how utterly ridiculous the posturing for moral high ground by those in/aligned with the PGA has been. There's been a lot of criticism towards these players for chasing the money, meanwhile what is the PGA's entire issue with LIV/reason for suspending players who play in LIV events? Money. And I don't blame the PGA for that - but then allow players to make their decision and be done with it. No need for the grandstanding or pretending that the PGA's chief concern is anything but profit. To me, this appears to be two parties acting in their best interest, but for some reason only one of those parties is being scrutinized for their interest in the money.

The golf was fine, and had an exciting finish.
The problem for me with the coverage was the amount of times the prize fund was mentioned, and in general how much self advertising there was from the commentators. I appreciate they’re trying to sell the format to the public, but it was just a bit much, a bit cringy at times. Talking of cringy, the team names were atrocious. I haven’t spoken to anyone who liked them.
I’m not sure how it will go from here, if the PGA and DP World Tour need to be overly worried. Apart from Bryson, will any of the top ranked players join?
Regardless, I’ll be watching as it’s a full tournament that I don’t have to pay stupid money to sky sports to be able to watch. ⛳️

I wished I was there to witness the 1st LivGolf tournament, but I'm on the wrong side of the world unfortunately. Its a pity the PGA Tour took the stand the way it has, but for me it needn't be that way - they should hv embraced the competition n not ban the golf pros. There's a lot hypocrisy going on on the American side, some dating back to linking LivGolf to the 9/11 tragedy - I can't fathom that. For God's sake, Trump even visited KSA at one point. Politics hv no place in golf - global golfers and viewers will eventually decide whether LivGolf will be a success or otherwise, no matter how much money is involved. And I hope all the pro golfers will hv the freedom to choose where they want to play, as long as they honour their commitments to the Tours that they are members. Can't wait for LivGolf to hold their tournaments in SEA soon. 😍

  • @Knickerson

I don’t know. People say, “forget politics.” Imagine Putin/Russia being the guy behind LIV golf and dropping millions on players to join. Imagine golf clubs agreeing to host one of their tournaments, and imagine yourself attending. Would you go?
Too extreme an example? Well, imagine they started the tour 10 years ago, when they were only jailing and poisoning the opposition. That’s about where we are now with LIV/SA today. Sure, it’s fun, it’s fresh, and it could change the face of golf in a good way. And you may come love that quirky ruling regime with politically-motivated-homicidal tendencies. That’s what normalizing is.

Great report! This was always marketed as an innovative and exciting comp, aside from a shot gun start, 54 holes and a ton of cash i didn't really feel it. I watched some on YT and have to say the commentary was annoying, over hyping everything. The highlights were bad, only showed putts. Then there is the (blood) money, paying hundreds of millions of dollars for these show ponies to join the event is disgusting in my opinion, not only because of the Saudi association but in the current economic climate it's in poor taste.
Perhaps am being too critical, I was hoping for more - something more fun, tournament style golf coupled with (hero golf style) challenges would be way more interesting and innovative, and would likely encourage people to watch. I think most are only interested because of the vast sums of money being thrown around - we'll see how the other tournaments pan out.
On the plus side, seemed it was more accessible than your typical tournament - i think i saw tickets on sale for £60 which is pretty good. I quite like the idea of a shotgun start and it's great you guys are able to film your content.

Initially I thought LIV was going to fall on its arse, but as it got closer and the media tried to pooh pooh it with constant references to human rights and money, my opinion changed. The US has killed, corrupted, destabilised and tortured more people and countries than any other - so I started routing for the underdog and I'm glad it has received positive praise during and after the first event. I feel the USGA has acted like a bully boy and hats off to those who left it. I hope are own PGA dont take the same stance. It's a bit pathetic really.

It’s funny criticising players for chasing the money, why do you think Europeans joins the PGA? Look at their typical prize funds V world DP events. It’s always been the same and the rub back in the 70/80/90’s was the number of events pro’s expected to play to keep their tour card for each tour.
I just think LIV have missed an opportunity to add money into European tour, ladies and development tour events.

I watched a little bit here in the states. I wasn't impressed with what I was watching. The leader board on the side of the screen was driving me nuts. I felt like I kept trying to watch that and I would miss something and have to rewind a bit. I've been to 2 US Opens and it definitely is challenging to get close to players, but I also found out some of them don't really want to talk to you anyway. Jordan Speith wasn't very friendly during practice rounds at Oakmont in 2016. Personally I think it's just a cash grab and that's it. I think the golf will suffer over time as in what's the incentive? No cut, guaranteed check. I think with the tournaments spaced out it's going to be a long time between competitive rounds too

Seems a shame to "weaken the field" on pga tour... BUT I think the usual coverage for a UK fan is awful with poor highlights packages on UA-cam and poor access on UK TV for a 4 day event on any pga tour event. So it's a refreshing change. I thought with a few tweaks the Formula 1 style coverage was great, but a little hard to read the side bar leader board quickly. For event one it seemed great! Will improve a lot.
I understand the "human rights issues" and all the buzzwords people use, my precious failing Newcastle United has already been taken over. The government is running these new projects indirectly so it's a little different, but this could be seen as a way to move forward or sport washing, either one won't be known until the future.
PGA is a little stuck in its ways and if you wanted to argue about ethics well, taxes go to UK and US governments and its not as if they don't sell weapons to be used horrifically, and many countries look at the USA as terrorists.
Can't knock a player not breaking any laws and earning a decent crust with more time off work to spend doing whatever they want.
99.9% of us would not turn down any LIV golf deal. The pga tour players are in that 0.1%.
Great footage Simon. Great to see golf on these shores. Looking forward to seeing how this pans out.

Really great video. I'm absolutely sick of the virtue signalling about where the money has come from for this tour and to be honest am a little disappointed that the players have not called the journalists out for this. The appearance money being touted is very much **** you money which means these players do not have to pander to the virtue signallers. I would really like someone to ask the journalists where their iPhone is made and how they feel about it being made by children in China. Or whether they are happy about Guantanamo Bay still being in full operation. Maybe point to the countless deaths caused by US/UK military interventions in recent decades or their overthrowing of foreign governments. As for the 9/11 group letter, this also seems far fetched given that the media narrative was never that there was a Saudi involvement as this was surely the point of the various other wars that people were happy to go along with.
