It's interesting to hear Marian Anderson here at 27 years old. Her voice hadn't fully matured yet....her best recordings were made in the 1930s and 1940s. It is nice to hear her this early in her career. It took me a long time to fully appreciate her voice. I understood her historical importance, but having only heard her sing past her prime, I could not appreciate the voice which developed a quavering vibrato and a tendency to skew flat in later years.
A bit mannered, IMO; I suspect that the 1924 technology had a lot to do with that. Later recordings are the best indications we have of her voice and artistry. What impresses me most in 2020 about Miss Anderson is that she seemed always to be holding something back, she seemed never to sing full voice.
Nothing extraordinarily mannered about her singing. She was born in 1897 and trained in the 1910s. Perhaps you should listen to other classically trained singers of the era for comparison. Furthermore, because she was a classically trained recitalist, I fail to see what you could possibly mean by her holding something back. This isn't an idiom centered on singing with your heart on your sleeve ala Soul or Traditional Black Gospel, but rather singing in a carefully studied and rehearsed manner.
