The Road from Karakol

- In summer 2011, Outdoor Research athlete Kyle Dempster took off on his bike across Kyrgyzstan with a couple mostly-accurate maps, a trailer full of climbing gear, and a vocabulary of 10 Kyrgyz words. He spent two months pedaling and pushing the bike more than 1200 km on roads of variable states of neglect, wading through wild rivers, dealing with corrupt military checkpoint staff, and soloing a handful of unclimbed alpine rock and mixed routes. He recorded the journey, his camera his only partner, friend, and sometimes the only receiving end of his conversations for days at a time.
In 2013, Kyle's self-shot footage of his journey in Kyrgyzstan made it to the desk of filmmakers Fitz Cahall and Austin Siadak, who were asked to look at the footage and see if there might be enough to chop together a 4-minute climbing film. They saw a lot more potential in it, and turned it into the 25-minute "The Road From Karakol," which debuted at the 5Point Film Festival and took home the Best In Fest award.
The film premieres online today, and we hope it will inspire you to start dreaming up your next adventure.

This short film has unequivocally been the most influential piece of media in my outdoor adventure journey. Seeing it for the first time as a young college student, inspired me to commit much of my life to climbing and skiing in the alpine. Now a decade later I still watch it the night before a big mission in the mountains, to remind myself why we do what we do. RIP Kyle, you'll live forever in our hearts.
Come back to watch this again fir the millionth time. Superb spirit. RIP dude.
Me too brother
Hello. I am from Kyrgyzstan. We are glad that you took such a good movie! We are glad to see you in our country! Thank you!
Like many others in the comments, I come back many many times to watch this PURE authentic report from a man who wants to be out-theeeeere. It gave me so much inspiration and motivation to do adventurous stuff and it still does awaken a little flame in me to keep going on similair expeditions! RIP Kyle and Scott
This is the best video on UA-cam. RIP Kyle
I truly wish more people would watch this video. Rest in peace Kyle, a true inspiration for living life to the fullest.
Thanks to everyone for the great comments and support! Glad you all enjoyed the film!
So Heavy. Every time I watch it. You will be missed
Watched this in 2014 and just found out Kyle passed away. He's immortal in his film and he is missed by all of us.
so sad
Went to junior high and high school with Kyle. Have great memories together. This film makes me happy. You lived a full life my friend.
Still love watching this. Going to miss this guy and his adventures. RIP, Kyle Dempster.
I can't get over that's quote. I love it! I've listened to it over and over! One sick video dude!
"Real adventure is not polished. It's not the result of some marketing budget, there's no Hashtag for it. It burns brightest, on maps edges, but it exists in all of us. It exists on the corner of imagination, and the ridiculous. You have to have faith. It will find you there."
Because of this movie i've visited Kyrgyzstan
Wow. Good on you
One of the most entertaining and enriching films I've ever seen! Great job to all who brought this film to life!
Rest in peace, Kyle!
He’s just been lost. I always think of the fact he could of used it as a cover for leaving life and melting in with the locals. Is this possibly true?
@@jedhawkins373 there's no way man. My brother was super close with him and he had so many loving friends and family back home.
This is deeply inspiring and touching. Very sad to read after watching this that Kyle passed away. I wish I could thank him for making this short film.
Frightening and uplifting, stunning and touching. An amazing film.
inspirational does not begin to express it, an angel among us, for a short time
loved watching that, rip my friend
I could watch this 100 times, you go. Live it up... no hashtag can top this.
This is incredibly inspirational. I'm leaving next year for a cycling trip from Portugal to Singapore and will certainly seek out the 'edges of the map'!

One of the best movies on UA-cam! RIP , Kyle...
You've inspired lots of people to their lives better
RIP Kyle. Still a huge inspiration. Thank you so much.
in an interview: "What really scares you about climbing?
Avalanches, death. But not as much as a sedentary life."
Hey, like a few other commenters, I rewatch this regularly. Thanks for making it, and putting in as much heart as you did.
What an incredible adventure. A brave young man, thanks for sharing your experiences.
Ich hörte Kyle ist nicht mehr unter uns. Der Mann hat mir mir Mut auf meinen Reisen gemacht. Danke Kyle. Men u are now in a better sphere
The most amazing adventure film ever!
This video has inspired me on so many levels, thank you for documenting your journey and inspiring each and every viewer.
I have spent a lot of my life trying to experience life fully. I love to bike, and I love mountains finding my way to remote and beautiful places. Thank you so much for sharing, you captured something here, and reminded me of who I am fundamentally, re-igniting my passion to strive. Maybe one day we can share a doobie and philosophize. cheers.
This is absolutely amazing! I'm completely in love with this story, video, & adventure. Thanks so much for sharing! :)
You sir, made me feel ashamed for not doing more with my life. Thank You.
Brilliant film. This really brought back memories- I see it hasn't changed much since I was there in '04. So many of the roads, buildings, mtns, etc look so familiar! Uncanny.
Rest in Peace ! You enjoyed life to the fullest and lifed your dream.
You achieved more than alot of people out there.
And you inspired alot of people - including me and my parents - to go out there and explore the world.
Your spirit will live on. ♥
But you are greatly missed.
Fantastic adventure, Rest in Peace, Kyle!
Wow, that was mind blowing!
I have recently been bingeing on mountaineering books. It started with Ed Viesturs "K2: Life and Death on the World's Most Dangerous Mountain" which led to "Everest: The Unclimbed Ridge" about the loss of cutting edge British Climbers Joe Tasker & Peter Boardman in 1982. This then led to my reading the books written by Joe & Pete before they died (one by each mountaineer was published post-mortem). I cannot recommend their writing more highly. There is resonance in the tragic loss of Kyle & Scott. None of these human beings were scared of taking risks but they were also not reckless. All of them wanted to come down safely. In the big mountains, anything is possible. I am 67 & big mountains are not in my future but I have been on some recent adventures involving trails & hills in West Virginia & my Irish Setter Lucas. I have never felt so alive as I do when we are out taking some risks. RIP Joe, Pete, Kyle & Scott & thank you for the example of living life to the fullest that you have left us.
I love watching this beautiful inspiring adventure...

That was just amazing. Makes me feel like the trivial day-to-day life is so meaningless. I feel like I'm missing out on what it really means to live.
So inspirational. I hope to one day be as brave and alive as you, my friend.
Peace and safe travels.
360 degrees of Rad. this is one of the greatest things, "it's 7 o'clock in the morning and I'm naked in Kiergestan
the rest is just wild memory, product with no blueprint"
Beautiful , it's amazing how actually raw and unpolished real life really is and how , even now in the globalization era, there are still parts out there that just yell wild and free
Great to watch.
Purely inspiring story with a funny intro. I totally agree with the quote of Kyle Dempster that adventure exists at intersection of imagination and ridiculousness. Superb footage in kyrgyz mountains and increadible storyline
Sick adventure. Seems like a great guy. RIP.
Absolutely inspiring. Thank you Kyle. RIP 😢

Magnificent! I love the narrative, editing and the candid filming. The short has a great balance of pioneer spirit, humor, adventure, culture, introspection, boldness, inspiration. Its wonderful to know there are still frontiers if you are willing to go get it. Thanks Kyle, I admire and applaud your seemingly undaunted courage. Cheers!
