Great video. Just completed my oil change on 2016 Smart Car Fortwo 453. All the details and parts in the comment section worked perfectly. Only difference is I ended up using 4 quarts (dipstick appeared full at 3.8, but after running motor and letting the car sit for 30 minutes the oil level was at the bottom notch of the dipstick). Only other thing missing is how to reset the oil change light. Just scroll through the menu to you see the service indicator message and hold the "OK" button on the left hand side of the steering wheel until the message flashes and continue holding until the message updates (about 1 minute holding it down)
I have done 3 oil changes on my Smart 453. I always use a torque wrench with following settings: 15 Nm oil drain bolt 25 Nm oil filter cover Note: The settings are Nm not Foot lbs!! Don’t over tighten!!! Haven’t had any leaks so far.
@@channelsicks yeah $750! I was like what this la ain’t no Benz nothing but cheap plastic and no power (I found that the ugly way) I just thought it was “cute”
Dude I appreciate your video. I screwed up and left the old gasket on-accident. Didn't see the thing and lost all my oil lol. Good thing for your video and oil being cheap!
You can reuse the copper gaskets if you anneal them. To anneal a copper gasket heat it with a torch until it is glowing hot then drop it into a container of water. That's it, it is annealed and ready for reuse. I'm a retired aircraft mechanic and aircraft piston engines use copper gaskets on sparkplugs and I've been annealing them for years for reuse as long as they are not nicked or cracked or broken. Annealing copper gaskets is approved by FAA, the most anal retentive part of the federal government, so its good enough for your car.
Manual for the 453 non-turbo says 3.5L on change with filter. It took 4L for it to be just above the low mark for me and I figured I may not have been on perfectly level ground. So I stopped at 4L after seeing someone else used 4L. 4.5L Just was a bit much for me to go to since I know it's at least enough now. Wanna add too to make sure that the filter housing screws on right. Mine screwed on tight, had no leak, but I noticed it was not flush with the engine. Removed it, repopped the filter element into the hole, and it screwed on flush (you can tell cause it will start to make plastic creaking noises as you overtighten it). Must've gotten stuck on the o-ring or something prior.
@@channelsicks so far so good. Only two complaints is that my driver side seat seems at the bottom is already ripped out slightly and the other is if you go around a corner alittle too fast it locks one break up/stability control acts up. Mine has about 37K miles
I am surprised that you didn't mention this is the turbo model (or did you?) as the turbo model uses an entirely different oil filter. An element instead of a metal screw-on.
Not sure about the M size, but if you see that it fits the 2nd generation Mini Cooper it should be the same. I also put a link to the one I got from Amazon.
Thanks for the video very helpful! I had a couple questions about the break pads how long do you think they last? Is okay if you don’t know the answer! My question is because when I bought this 2017 smart car last July my first 10k miles for service my dumbass went to the Mercedes Benz and I got charge $800 for an oil change and break pads! So my next 10k miles I went to my mechanic pretty dumb of me also because again I got hit with break pads, rotors and oil change out the door $1100 ... so I’m done being dumb and I need some good information about how long these parts really last... I do drive a lot because is my work so I put in about 800 miles a week and no I’m not hitting the brakes every minute but I do drive in the city of SF !
There's no freaking way you got charged for $800 for oil change and brake pads. I took my smart to get the oil changed and yes it did cost $100 but not no $800 for brakes and an oil change

Thanks for all of you for sharing your knowledge on how to service the car. The dealership will charge you an arm and a leg, child and pet....
For sure - no prob. Yea it gets pretty expensive and really isnt too difficult

8mm is the same as 5/16ths for the square drive adapter
You can anneal the washer with a torch and re use it

Depends on how aggressive on the brakes you are and type of pads that you get. Normally, the brakes pads will last much much longer than 10k -

What did you do to remove the housing? It is very hard to remove
For the oil filter? I used a 27mm socket (it's in the desciption and vid) -
