  • -Good News of the L E Samuel Beckett
I received this further information from poster
    LeonVincent H.K. (LV) He said.
'I know this is an old one but since then it rescued over 770 people from one wooden barge in one single encounter off the coast of Libya and surprisingly and thankfully not one person died and I think it was the single largest rescue of people in one go. There is a video showcasing the crew of the L.É Samuel Beckett rescuing people trying to make the journey form Libya to Europe, it is heart warming and endearing yet really really sad. If any of you are interested to see what it is like to see a navy do humanitarian work and not solely exist for defensive or offensive purposes you should look up Irish Navy Documentary. It is quite eye opening and enlightening. Peace.'
I'm down in the Belfast Titanic docklands to see what is in for the Belfast Maritime Festival 2019.
This is the Irish Navy vessel the L E Samuel Beckett. LÉ Samuel Beckett (P61) is a Samuel Beckett-class offshore patrol vessel (OPV) of the Irish Naval Service. The ship was launched in November 2013. She was built by Babcock Marine, North Devon at a cost of 71 million Euro. She is named after Irish playwright and author Samuel Beckett.
Like other OPVs in the Irish Naval Service, the ship's primary mission is fisheries protection, search and rescue, and maritime protection operations, including vessel boardings.
Although similar to the Róisín-class OPV, Samuel Beckett is over 10 metres (33 ft) longer, intended to increase its capabilities in the rough waters of the North Atlantic. The ship is designed to carry a crew of 44 and have space for up to 10 trainees.
Additionally, Samuel Beckett is designed to carry remotely operated submersibles and a decompression chamber for divers. The expanded deck area would allow the ship to deploy unmanned surveillance planes.
The vessel was "twinned" with Cork city in a ceremony held on 7 June 2014. In late 2015 Samuel Beckett was deployed to the Mediterranean as part of Ireland's contribution to the humanitarian response to the European migrant crisis. During the ship's cruise, more than 1,000 migrants were rescued. In one event, 111 people were rescued in a United Nations operation off the coast of Libya. The vessel was redeployed to the area in 2016, and on 17 November 2016 rescued 50 migrants who were on a rubber boat 25 Nautical Miles North-west of Tripoli. This brought the number of migrants rescued by the Samuel Beckett to 2310

Great camera work and good commentary and craic. Respect from your brother in the Republic. As a side note , Yoda was chosen for the graphic on this ship as the men and women in the Irish navy provided security for the Star Wars filming crew and cast while Star Wars episode VIII was being filmed on Skellig Michael.

There is no such thing as a Republic of Ireland Passport for example it’s an all island all Ireland passport and every unionist person born in Northern Ireland is entitled too one. Enjoy your videos Tom, the old prod phrase brought back memories of being stranded in the rain 10yrs ago, on the glenshane, and a Gentleman stopped, let me use his phone, bought me a coffee, and had my car towed to his garage free of charge. He stopped when he saw my southern reg because he was shown kindness down south many years earlier, he said "this old prod will help you out". Never got his name, but never forgot his kindness. Great detail shots there Tom. Love your friendly style. I think this ship, James Joyce and the George Bernard Shaw were build at the Appledore yard in Devon, England and what a lovely job they made of them. I think the men and women there built up a great working relationship with the Irish navy since the first orders (including the Niamh) in the '90's. Sadly the yard is now closed. I hope those skilled people found rewarding work afterwards. What a waste otherwise.

I'm smiling about your reaction to my post SE!
Things have moved on a great deal here. ( I'm not kidding myself either. There are still mega problems with a divided educational set up and sectarianism is still rife. Also we have major alcohol, drug and suicide problems! )
I am on speaking terms with the lady who runs the whole Irish language programme she is Linda Ervine. She is the sister in law of David Ervine who did time in prison for being a UVF bomber. In later life he became a respected leader of the PUP ( Progressive Unionist Party ) Unfortunately he died aged 54 in 2007 of natural causes. I knocked about with his brother at Stranmillis college where we were bth trining as teachers. Linda works out of the Newtownards Road Methodist Skainos Centre.
Wikipedia says of her. 'Linda Ervine is a language rights activist from East Belfast, Northern Ireland. She is a speaker and supporter of the Irish language and is the project leader of the "Turas" Irish language project which "aims to connect people from Protestant communities to their own history with the Irish language".
I find it amusing that my wee amateur channel has more videos than anyone else on the 1798 Rebellion leaders. I have filmed many of their graves plaques and statues etc A lot of people come on my channel and think I am a Catholic. Boy do they get some surprise! lol But then they have a good laugh about it too!
      Best wishes. Keep 'er lit.

Hi Cudds. I think we are talking about the same yard.
      Wikipedia says,
'In June 2007, Babcock International Group acquired DML, including its operations at the Appledore Shipyard, renaming them Babcock Marine Appledore.'
best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills of Northern Ireland.

@@TomMcClean that’s right Tom I work there for 36 years and work on all the Irish navy’s ships build at the yard great days Harland & Wolff now own the yard I now retired but hopefully the yard will go from strength to strength

Wow that is some length of years Cudds. All power to your elbow! You can rightfully be very proud of your contribution. I bet you have seen many a ship built and sail out. I wasn't even aware that H&W now own the yard. That is very interesting. H&W Belfast is sadly a shell of what it once was. they even have to bring in foreign skilled workers when they get a large job. All the skills were allowed to die when the majority of the work force was allowed to go. Keep 'er lit.

      @TomMcClean  4 роки тому +1

      Hey Snipper,
      I didn't know this.
I'm a complete landlubber. I know absolutely nothing about sailing/ships/boats of any kind. I know nothing about what words to use or not to use. A big boat and a ship are all the same to me.
If I have offended any sailor in the making of any of my videos I apologise. I do not wish to cause offence to anyone. No one has ever posted on this to me before and I have made 100s of ship/boat associated videos.
