so you release a video in Jan 2024, without stating the year of the race, of a race in fact held in 2014 in SF from an account titled "...Barcelona". If you're trying to expand interest in the sport by appealing to those of us who don't know the 34th from 37th race, you are doing a pretty lousy job. You need to improve your communication strategy.
Speaking of communication the date on the video clearly said 2013. 4:01 09/18/‘13. I think we should complain about how Americans don’t know how to write the date! 😂

So if someone doesn’t know the AC number count matching to year, they had to watch an implied new event to see that is a decade old. That’s not good communication! That’s clickbait.

Amazing boats but I miss the elegance, beauty and quality of racing with the 12s.

The America's Cup has always been about designing the best boat. It's not a race where all competitors use identical equipment, to find out who are the best sailors (the kind of sailing you see in the Olympics). The boats have to be designed to meet certain mathematical parameters, but there are tradeoffs allowed within those parameters (the 12 meters refers to a formula, not the length of the boat). And anything else not constrained by those parameters is allowed (e.g. the famous AUS winged keel).
After a century of racing 12 meters, their design was probably as optimized as could be. So a change was necessary to breathe new life into the design competition the Cup is supposed to be about. Whether you like the catamarans or not, it's indisputable that these boats have advanced sailboat design by leaps and bounds. Their similarity to aircraft just drives home the point that the Navier-Stokes equations do not distinguish between water or air. These boats are essentially the first flat-screen TV produced (42" and cost $20k). Eventually their technology will come down in price and make its way into regular boats (just like you can buy a 50" TV for $200 now). We're already seeing more widespread use of carbon fiber, thanks to manufacturing research and field testing done to race these boats.
@@solandri69 They haven't advanced sailboat design, they've advanced race tech for a very narrow application. Outside of materials, there is nothing on these "boats" applicable to practical use by cruisers or amateur racers. I wouldn't even compare these vehicles to cats, the point of the foil is diminish the impact of current, and for many of us that's simply not sailing. Large scale kitesurfing would be a better description.

Wow, has it already been over 10 years?? I attended all the races that year here in San Francisco. It was an awesome comeback. Got invited into Larry Elisons's afterparty the evening of the last race. Crazy times.
That start on race 11 was the best start in a sailing race I've ever witnessed. I remember sitting on the couch just LMAO.
I remember seeing the Oracle parked in New Zealand. It's such a beautiful craft up close.
I still think of these boats and these races all of the time. I remember watching the whole cup and was amazed at just how much each team learned after each race. At the beginning they couldnt even turn without falling off the foils. Then halfway through this battle, you essentially lost the race if you ever got off the foils. Truly amazing sailing.
Ahh, this was such a great event. Incredible sailors and machines. And what a come-back by Oracle/USA. I understand why they dialed it down, but what a magnificent era.

@@toomanyhobbies2011 it’s pretty obvious that you have no depth of knowledge when it comes to the cup and that’s OK. This is going back to pre-Connor days when it was a skipper and the crew that beat a skipper and a crew in roughly the same bolts, almost identical it depended upon the scale of the crew not the technical aspects of the boat. Yes, skill is needed but it’s diminished by the technical aspects of a boat and that’s not sailing.

@@donhearn2248 I totally agree with you. The America’s cup has become more about experimenting to make a boat more technical faster, but never the crew. And we do need improvements and technology. That’s good. But don’t we need individuals that can actually sail? Going out and hiring a large piece of meat that can work a grinder. Nope.

I has to extend my leave, luckily I was able to work remotely, that was one hell over a comeback, or one hell of the fumble, all depends on which side you were rooting for. SF Bay was actually the perfect venue for such a race.
I’d call it almost the biggest f-up of all time, they had the fastest boat from the get go, they just didn’t know how to sail it. They had to observe the kiwis in order to learn. And when you add on barkers poor starting…well the rest is history. Also, they should have been banned from the event for cheating in the lead up World Series events where they were adding weight to the boats and shifting it around, they pinned that on someone in their team so the real guilty guys would still be able to sail in the cup.
exactly!! Oracle couldn't foil into the wind until ETNZ showed them how. also that 9th race where ETNZ crossed the line first but was over the time limit due to light winds was embarrassing for Oracle too. great for their lawyers but still🤭
But it all came down to the last minute rule change by the USA lowering the upper wide limit. That meant the Kiwi boat was built a lot heavier and stronger, Still time has shown that the best boat wins even with dodgy deals done!!

Larry Ellison owes the win to Paul Bieker from Seattle. Oracle was down 6 - 0 facing elimination by Team New Zealand. Paul designed interceptors on the stern of the boat to lift the hulls out of the water onto the foils. It worked. Larry Ellison / Oracle won 7 in a row in the greatest come back in sports history.

Because of this boat race. They had to change the most iconic race to March 2013 in San Francisco and someone died during the swim of the Escape from Alcatraz triathlon.

Off the top of my ahead I recall at the time the talk was how great Australia’s new design was and how they were going to beat the U.S.. It was a come back, but only because the U.S. was lucky in the first 2 races due to equipment failure by Australia. The superior boat won that year.

The American boat was already beat when they changed skipper. That race was won by an Aussie, not Americans. Don't mention it again. Ever!

If it wasn’t for a little wind change the Kiwis would have won it in the race that was timed out. Lead by a country mile and within a few hundred metres of the finish line and it timed out? Then the American boat employed Kiwis to make the changes they needed to make the, go fast. Had nothing really to do with Spithill but he seems to get 100% of the credit. Having said that Barker didn’t really perform great for all those races ..
NZL was ahead 8-1. They had 8 races to win one and the trophy. They fumbled badly, probably worst ever in any sports. You seemed to be sored about it. Oh well.

There should not be a helicopter flying above them boats while they're racing. Pretty easy for him to point his prop wash To one of the boats.
The pilot has been well briefed as to where to position the helicopter so that's its downwash doesn't effect either boat.
It might look as though it's directly 'above' the boats, but that is just the camera angle.

How much do these things cost? I just saw a close up and it looks like they're completely carbon fibre. A high end supercar with a mono and carbon body panels is eyewatering expensive and difficult to make. These have to be a fortune.
