  • The AC 3000 ME is a very British sports car, and not just because of the badge on the bonnet.
Designed by one of the engineers responsible for the Ford GT40, this mid-engined racing car for the road should have become the stuff of legend, not myth.
Join Paul Woodford for the story behind the classic car that everyone wanted, but no one has ever seen, the AC 3000 ME.

I worked on the prototype at AC in Thames Ditton around mid 70's. One of the great British motor manufacturers.

So underrated! - Quite a few turbo's out there as well which give the ME the legs to go with the looks. A British Stratos for 5% of the cost and way rarer.

The first I knew of these cars was in the mid 80s when someone did a one off with the 2.2l turbo motor out of a Shelby Charger - and painted it in Santa Fe Blue and Silver. Never saw one in real life here in the States until years later. Neat little car - and, as others have mentioned, reminded me of a Fiero, but with better lines.

Very interesting car and undervalued. Also nice that you could add a turbo as a period extra (albeit a modern unit) and then add engine management as well possibly. These Ford V6s are very straightforward with parts being available, so i would imagine quite a practical car to own.

Came here as it is the first car in Wikipedia’s list of all cars ever made. Great review of a car that I had no idea existed. Definitely one to collect now before prices skyrocket.

I always thought that the ME went after AC to make ACME which means ‘pinnacle’ (when something is the best it can be) hence ACME 3000

Excellent review - have liked this shape since seeing one in 1983 edition of the Observers Book of Cars. A good looking car. Shame it never saw the Alfa Busso V6. That would have been spine tingling.

Reminds me of a Pontiac Fiero but much better looking.

The last Fieros finally got some kick to them, but of course, GM cancelled them at that time.

I like the plea at the end...please bring back cars like these. I agree--but doubt that would happen. I would like to see cars again that anyone mechanical can repair themselves. Remove broken pieces by modules. We have too much computing in the cars, and too much laziness of boneheaded people who can't get anywhere without a NAV system, and can't even figure out how to change a flat tire. Not to mention, the governments world over want to force us into electric cars with limited range, long charging times, and little utility in cold or hot climates. What a joke. People worry more about drink holders than improving their driving skills.
