On this day in 1999 Roy Keane could not have written a better script for himself by scoring the opening goal in a 3-0 win against Valencia just hours after signing a new four-year contract at the club | December. 8. 1999

So many times ManUtd comfortably beat a team in the group stage who ended up reaching the final when ManUtd were a bit unlucky to be knocked out in QF each time 97/98 vs Juventus, 99/00 Valencia, 02/03 Juventus... and then when you think that both years ManUtd won it 98/99 & 07/08 they scored loads of goals and were unbeaten both campaigns, by far tournament top scorers in 98/99, in 07/08 they ended up going a record number of CL games unbeaten which still hasn't been equalled by anyone. And they had 2 campaigns they definitely would've won if they weren't robbed (funnily enough the 2 Mourinho years he won it 2004 & 2010 Scholes was played onside by 4 Porto players in 2004 and Porto then had an unusually easier path for CL from QF onwards it was more like Europa path that year) and ManUtd also had very unlucky exits in other seasons another vs Mourinho 2013 Nani red card changed the match, ManUtd went out on away goal rule 3 times and some other years not quite away goals but still unlucky and often vs the eventual winners ManUtd were very rarely well beaten in CL but won convincingly so often never progressed on away goals with Ferguson nor on pens in 2 leg-ties. The consistency ManUtd had in the CL was superb baring in mind they were mostly dominating domestically at the same time as well. Also the 2 CL runners up to arguably greatest club team even those seasons again won PL same season and were unbeaten until the CL final both years as well in 08/09 & 10/11
96/97 SF lost to eventual winners Dortmund. Had many unlucky moments hit woodwork and had 2 shots cleared off the line and conceded a goal from a defelected shot.
97/98 Lost on away goals to Monaco team that had Trezeguet, Henry etc... (Keane was injured that season) any team who got to knockouts in 97/98 & 98/99 were a good team because it was much harder to make knockouts then, only 8 out of 24 teams rather than no less than half the teams reaching knockouts in the familiar format.
98/99 Won it in invincible style and played the likes of Rivaldo, Figo, Ronaldo, Zidane, Kahn on the way.
99/00 QF unlucky to play RealMadrid after topping the group, RealMadrid won competition
00/01 QF lost to eventual winners Bayern
01/02 SF lost on away goals
02/03 QF unlucky to face Real Madrid again after winning group. A stronger RMadrid than 2000 despite the fact they didn't go on to win it that year.
03/04 Robbed vs eventual winners in last 16 when it would've been unusually easy route to the trophy hence why Porto did go on to win it
04/05 Last 16 lost to AC Milan who should've won the final that year 3-0 up took their foot of the gas only because Liverpool were so mediocre then and not taken seriously and wouldn't have stood a chance in previous formats.
05/06 A rare bad campaign can't be great every year
06/07 SF lost to eventual winners. Had some emphatic wins such as 7-1 vs Roma in QF, AC were originally banned from the competition that year as were some other Italian teams so if that ban was not lifted ManUtd would've won it.
07/08 Another invincible win scoring loads and playing very strong teams on the way
08/09 RU nearly won back-to-back invincible CL titles which for me would eclipse any unbeaten record that other teams have in various competitions that they're proud of. The final was 50/50 that year as well, could've gone either way Barca got the breaks but ManUtd were the most convincing in the semi-finals out of all 4 teams and were unlucky with unfair suspension that had an effect on the final.
09/10 QF lost on away goals only because Bayern were able to score vs less men when they were losing the tie which for long period was comfortable both legs Rooney who was on fire got crucial injury but still ManUtd were doing fine until Rafael's harsh red. No way is Ribery not pushing Rafael more let alone as much and he's not booked nor is he or any of the Bayern players for demanding a sending off for Rafael. Only Rafael punished. Only Lyon in SF and so the final that year would've been vs Inter and ManUtd's record in CL vs them is good, including beating Mourinho's Inter the previous season quite comfortably in Last 16 I think ManUtd would've won again.
10/11 RU only lost to Barca, long season ManUtd weren't far away from winning the treble that season and were unbeaten in CL until this final but ManUtd were well beaten this time.
But that was still great consistency that 15 year period.

Yeah but this was no way a 3-0 United win and Valencia had massive absentees as well too.
The way Valencia carved out chances in this game was an omen to Real doing you in the QFs.
You weren't good enough this season in the CL.

This is a terrible recollection of things btw.
You were piss poor in all your eliminations in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2005.
04 fair enough you were unlucky with the ref vs Porto but you were shit in 03/04, so not banking on that shit squad winning the CL.
Deservedly knocked out in 05/06 in that Benfica group. 06/07 Milan deservedly smashed you in San Siro.
2011 you only reached the final cos of an easy run. You were way off Barca and Real that season.

This is why people who rate above Pep are blind.
What Sir Alex achieved year after year and how far his Aberdeen and United teams went in every competition makes him the greatest of all time.
And Pep's 2 UCLs with Barcelona - he was helped by the referees otherwise he wouldn't even reach the finals. Sir Alex on the other hand got screwed out of at least 2 UCL wins.

How Keane never won a ballon dor is CV razy! He was a master on the pitch, just spraying the ball about and completely controlling the game! Beckham, Giggs and Scholes also should of had one! But the ballon dor don't like players that work hard also just like players that stroll around till get a chance to attack but at man utd the world class worked as hard as the lower players

Beckham’s anticipatory pin point deliveries resulting in the goals because of his great situation awareness, but people just ignored or underrated him.

@@Scallion_DNot really, you didn't watch those games. Real got really lucky at Bernabeu, where they did nothing and United deserved the win. The second leg would have been a totally different game. Plus, at Old Trafford the game basically begun 0-1 with a gratuitous own goal. It can't get easier than that. Real weren't the best team of those matches, overall it was even; but they were a great team, and with a bit of luck, they deserved to pass.
