You don’t always need a fighter plane to pull extreme manoeuvres in the sky.
Homebuilt aircraft, also known as amateur-built aircraft or kit planes, are constructed by persons for whom this is not a professional activity. These aircraft may be constructed from scratch from plans, or from assembly kits.
Cri-Cri
The Colomban Cri-Cri is the smallest twin-engined manned aircraft in the world, designed in the early 1970s by French aeronautical engineer Michel Colomban.
DA-11
Leeon Davis was an American aircraft designer, noted for his homebuilt aircraft. The DA-11 is Leeon’s gift to the backyard flyer, powered buy, believe it or not, a lawnmower engine.
Long-EZ
The Rutan Model 61 Long-EZ is a homebuilt aircraft with a canard layout designed by Burt Rutan's Rutan Aircraft Factory. It is derived from the VariEze, which was first offered to homebuilders in 1976.
Voyager
The Rutan Model 76 Voyager was the first aircraft to fly around the world without stopping or refuelling. In December 1986 Voyager took off from Edwards Air Force Base in California at the start of a historic 9 day flight.
Boomerang
The Rutan Model 202 design was intended to be a multi-engine aircraft that in the event of failure of a single engine would not become dangerously difficult to control due to asymmetric thrust.
ARES
Burt Rutan built his ARES fighter just to prove that a high performance military jet could be developed cheaply. The ARES is a demonstrator aircraft built by Scaled Composites, ARES is an acronym for Agile Responsive Effective Support.
Gossamer Albatross
In 1979 the Gossamer Albatross flew its way into the record books with an incredible human-powered flight. Built by American aeronautical engineer Paul MacCready's company AeroVironment, in 1979 it completed a successful crossing of the English Channel.
NASA Pathfinder
Two decades later design concepts from the Gossamer Albatross inspired another experimental aircraft, NASA’s Pathfinder. The first aircraft developed as part of an evolutionary series of solar and fuel cell system powered unmanned aerial vehicles. - Наука та технологія

@InfiniteMushroom Experimental aircraft still go through a certification process it's just on an individual basis and the term "Experimental" doesn't necessarily mean a deviation from established design practices although it can.
Has to be way more fun than riding a Briggs & Stratton powered lawnmower.

Lawnmower engine for a plane that does 160 mph and light on fuel ? It's like breaking out of the box...
Damn thing does 160 mph, takes off in 500 feet, gets 100 mpg, all while being made of metal and having only 8 more hp than the Wright Flyer. I wonder how much fuel it holds? I’d love to have one lol
Edit: top speed is actually 135 mph for that one. The Cri Cri is the one that tops out at 160 mph

Its a great motor....comes in different sizes.
The Ridley company used them in their motorcycles....air cooled v twins with hydraulic lifters for the push rods like a harley motor....called a vanguard motor.

Darn thing sounded pretty sweet when in the air! Said the only change to the engine was the carburetor. For no engineering degree, it seems the guy really nailed it.
During the winter of 97/98, I was working in California City as a jump pilot and freefall videographer. I wasn't there very long before I knew that when anyone yelled..."they're coming", it meant that the Rutan boys were gracing us with a fly-by in one of their wacky birds. I'd heard of the Boomerang before, but seeing it make a low pass was awesome!!

I've piloted the MC-15 Cri-Cri for 1/2 hour of aerobatics (without parachute ... too heavy and cockpit too small).
It's an unique sensation to pilot a kart. You feel so vulnerable in this box.
I like that little yellow plane with the V-tail. Hard to believe it has that kind of performance with just 20 hp. 100 mpg is awesome too, that’s almost twice as much as a Prius. I wonder what the fuel capacity is?
Fuel capacity is 6 US gallons, giving it a no-wind range of about 625 statute miles and an endurance of just over five hours to fuel exhaustion at an average burn rate of 1.17 gallons per hour..
I really liked that one.

I'm in love with that plane, but the cockpit visibility freaks me out ;) I couldn't imagine doing VFR in a plane that blocks 70% of the ground in front of me.

I used to work and fly at that airport. They keep the field mowed down to prevent tumbleweeds from growing and subsequently blowing across the runways. They probably found that tumbleweed off field stuck in a fence and thought "Hey, what better way to say you're in Texas than a tumbleweed?"

The crash was caused by the builder changing the location of a fuel switch and Denver not being familiar with the plane. The switch was placed behind the pilots shoulder. When Denver tried to switch tanks, he turned his upper body. That caused him to move the stick to the side and rolled the plane . he was at low altitude and a wingtip caught the water.
The plane as designed, is very safe. The canard loses lift prior to the main wing which causes the nose to come down and the plane gains speed and the all is averted.

Hah, if that first plane can do 3 L/hr and can cruise at 130 mph it is way more economical than my Prius and it FLIES! Gotta get me one!

Well, a Prius is a few 1000 lbs, and most engine output is wasted on moving the heavy vehicle around. Seriously, that plane is lighter than many motorcycles even. Makes sense to me. Not good for the average person, because a crash would be fatal (no crash safety crunch zones, etc.) It sacrifices crash safety of heavy cars for lightweight aircraft structure.
@书中自有黄金屋 How is it irrelevant? I was only using the car comparison at all so show that the numbers listed are reasonable when comparing to something we are all more familiar with. It's harder to understand major concepts without matching to something familiar.
I'm an airline pilot and flight instructor... You think I don't know that there are major differences? I listed a number of them already. The differences I listed are major contributors to WHY some small airplanes can be so efficient.
书中自有黄金屋 You're completely missing my point originally, I wasn't focusing on crash safety for a car turning into a plane, but instead why we don't have plane-light cars. You're on a tangent that I wasn't caring about, or focusing on! I was just listing reasons why cars AS cars, On The Ground are so much heavier (you're only proving my point)... then mentioning that effect on fuel use. Enough with this wild goose chase.

4:12 wow a real treat to see Leeon Davis and his DA-11, I used to hang our with him at Stinson AF. Flew in his DA-7 a couple times and it was such an awesome experience. Leeon was full of life and he taught me a few things about airplanes. Met his son Harrold a few times as he would come over to be with his dad.
He's passion was designing and building his all aluminum planes, one day over his long and wide workbench he hands me a hunk of lead we use to keep things on the table and tells me, that's 5lbs, keep adding these and try to fly... he was such a pioneer on his field with a vision to design a great fun airplane for you and me. Thanks Leeon!

I was really taken with the TX Air. Leeon and I talked at length about me buying the plane. Back then it was $20,000 less engine.
After 45 minutes I buoght his book and he also sent me a couple of printed photos of the TX Air. One of the best designs ever.
I love watching these series when it first came out on Discovery channel!

@@alaskanalain I'm not sure if I'd want to fly behind a Briggs & Stratton over anything but flat ground with lots of pastures or roads without powerlines. :-) A Subaru or Mazda 13b is as far as I'll stray outside a Continental or Lycoming.

AHEM!! Eeeeh, ya forgot one minor detail: Van's RVs. In 1998, there were 2,000 flying, (they started in 1994), and in 2017, there were over 10,000 flying. Not trying to shame Rutan's planes, as they're all great, but THE hands-down king of home builts is Van's RV series by a whole bunch. Yep, My fave of the video is the little Vee-Tailed B&S powered job. Very cool.
I was there in Greece for the human pedal powered flight "Daedalus" in 1988. From Crete to Santorini piloted by pilot Olympic cyclist Kanellos Kanellopoylos flying at an average altitude of 20 feet for 54 minutes covering 115 km. (feat was equivalent to 2 Marathons back to back)
Twice the distance in half the time. Impressive!

Same principal idea in the Lotus racecars and even early (pre 917) Porsche racecars, not the most powerful but light and low drag

Burt Rutan designed some far out and interesting aircraft. The boomerang is a take on he Blohm und Voss BV141.
Nice one . I was just going to say that . There are a few aircraft that break the rule of ' if it looks right , it'll fly right ' . RN Test Pilot Eric 'Winkle' Brown flew the BV 141 , and , if I remember correctly , said it flew perfectly well . Ironically , it was the RLM big-wigs that didn't like it because it looked so strange . Admitedly , they wanted as many BMW 801s for the FW190 . edit . Damn I feel old. I was able to identify the Cri Cri on sight over 30 years ago just from pictures in books. Yeah. You know, those things we used pulverize dead trees for in order to print words and pictures on.

The Rutan Boomerang looks a lot like the old BLOHM & VOSS BV-141
Not just that. the BF-109 Z-1 is pretty similiar as well. Compared with the sentence "pushing the limits of aviation" you would think people would try new stuff instead of just trying stuff that was already proven to work. same for the "revolutionary" push config with the prop in the back. XP-55, B-36 are just some examples of it working.

I think the Cri-Cri should have a hole in the floor where the pilot could stand on roller skates while holding the plane up until its airborne. Take of Fred Flinstone style rather then atop some other motorized vehicle.

I luv construction and design and researching and innovation of all aero and astro. Il tell you what and way off subject but a train engine is THE SMARTEST! You use engines, generators, pumps, compressors, motors, transmissions and damn to know about quite a bit is really taken for granted. I like flying boats too.

the autoplane (aka car with wings) was one i liked. imagine cars that are built with detachable wings and engines that can be used when you drive on the road, and can be put back on when you want to take flight
This probably has the same problem as amphibious cars. You make a car that can also be a boat and get something that is a bad car and also a bad boat.

Absolutely . He is a true aviation pioneer and innovator . Pleasant and humble too .
But Rutan is my aviation hero, right up there with my automotive hero Christian Von Koenigsegg.

the Cri-Cri doesn't even need a car to launch it. No idea why they show that in this way... I've also seen pilots taking-off on grass.
I am without a clue also. Seems like a whole lot of extra drudgery for nothing. Unless it gets squirrelly on run up. As small as that is, wind thermal heating off the air strip could make things exciting.

Added cool factor also it was an ad for Mitsubishi more than the plane... alternative was to tow or drive along I suppose.

Doing it on an airport runway is even more ridiculous. At least they could have shown the carrier vehicle running down a country road.

It was likely an airshow or testing to lead up to one...WITH emergency vehicles available, unlike your "dirt road"...oh, and no cars, trees, telephone poles, power lines, signs, etc...as it is an airport, designed for planes to take off and land..DUH.
Performing pilots try to wow the crowds, the reason the crowds come. Not many aircraft you could do this with, so they did. This wasn't a "hold my beer and watch this" stunt, like you are obviously thinking. It was almost certainly meticulously planned out with analysis, tested in phases, and executed, and likely by high time very capable pilots and crew. Most, but not all (unfortunately), airshow pilots die of old age. They wouldn't if that wasn't true. Leave it to those who know, and stop ignorantly criticizing them when you obviously DO NOT. Just sayin'.

I think the Van's homebuilts are the most popular and functional in history.
Not sure why they had to put a Cri Cri on a car's roof. The Cri Cri will take of very nicely by itself.
