Ill never forget his incredible line of Spezza, Alfredsson and Heatley !! Perfect balance with complete players...too bad Ottawa didn't have an equivalent second line and top offensive defenseman to help them...At least the cup run was pretty fun !

Guy was an absolute gem as a mentor for the Leafs in his final years. Glad Toronto immediately snapped him up into the organization. He should probably be able to even make the odd inspirational speech in the dressing room still.

As time goes on he'll definitely be remembered as a Senator and as one of the best. It feels like a long time ago when he was traded, but he's one of the few players Sens fans still talk about and will in the future when talking 00s and 10s Sens teams.

I wouldn't be surprised if Spezza wasn't already acting like an assistant gm during his tenure in Toronto as a player anyway, but it's nice to know he will have input when it comes to drafts, player development and trades. He's perfect for this job.

Sad to see him retire, happy that his journey continues with Leafs. Congrats to a great person with a great career!
I've been following Spezza since I red there was a 15 year old playing for Brampton that was very promising. He's my all time favorite player and his run with Alfredsson and Heater in 07 is one of the best NHL memories I have.
I have a lot of personal memories in parallel to following his career, so I have a good idea where my life was when he got like drafted, first play-offs, hattricks, got married, traded etc, while in my turn I got say my driving license, retired hockey, broke up with girlfriends, battling depression, jobs etc.
I hope he gets into THG Hof one day as I don't think he's got enough accolades to get into the real one.

His 05-06 and 06-07 seasons stand out as his best but I think 11-12 was his best season. He didn't have Heatley, didn't play with Alfredsson much 5v5 .... he made Michalek a 35 goal scorer and turned Colin Greening into an above average forward. He had the emergence of Karlsson to help him, but as someone who watched that entire season he was stellar throughout.

Fantastic on faceoffs, still soft hands. he deserved a letter with toronto, deserved to play games 1 and 2 this playoffs, deserved to finish his career with another season and 1000 points and deserves his number in the rafters of the Senators' arena.

Growing up - even as a Leafs fan and him being a Sen, Spezza was one of, if not my favourite player. Up there with Ovi.
I remember going to McDonald's and getting his and Ovi's Star Sticks when I was like 7 years old, I even used a Jason Spezza branded Sher-Wood stick when playing.
Seeing him in a Leafs jersey was something I always wanted but never thought would actually happen and it felt surreal when it finally did. I wanted nothing more than to see him hoist the cup with a Leaf on his chest (or at all tbh, guy deserved it) and I'm bummed that won't happen now.
Hopefully he'll still get his name on it as a member of the management, just having him be a presence is great for this team.

For someone who was expected to perform at some impossible level, he managed to be more consistent than most draft picks. Injuries did not help, obviously, and there comes a point in time where the team you were traded to just isn't doing much to spark your love for the game, and that contract seemed to have weighed heavy on him. A solid career, great guy, very knowledgeable, and is an excellent leader. I'm glad to see that he's still part of the organization.

Great player. I never liked Spezz, he played for the enemy for a long time. Thought Leafs getting him was a Marleau, Thornton type mistake, way past his prime 4th line throwaway. Man, was I wrong, what heart! His time in T.O was special and I will never forget him dropping his gloves for his teamates in a playoff game. What a warrior, has Gilmour and Clark type heart. I will miss Spezz it was an honor, he won me over. To bad no Cup. I don't hate Keefe, but he needs to go! Leafs management likes the idea of ELC types running the team. I'd like to see Spezz behind the bench, whats thre worst that happens? Spezz is out coached? Ha! I hate being that guy, that fan but Keefe is out coached every game. The only other members are old school Frank Finnigan from the late 20s and 30s and Daniel Alfredsson, who only ended up with 160 more points than Spezza and who ALSO didn't win anything in '07. Who else in the Sens organization is comparable to those two? Just Spezza. He'll be retired there and you'll eat your words.

    • @Luke63517

@@countrystud1986 The only other player whose # was retired was Chris Phillips who played his entire career in Ottawa. A career that started before Spezza's time with the Sens and ended afterwards. Chris Neil can say the same, but his number isn't hanging from the rafters. How about Heatley? He had back to back 50 goal seasons and I don't see his number up there. There is a lot of players who have been a part of Ottawa's history, but retiring a number requires more than a great career. Also, remember that Ottawa didn't decide to trade him, he asked for a trade. I'd put Karlsson up there before Spez. And this is coming from a Spezza fan.

Keith could too while at 91 but i doubt it. idk i just see getting to 100 in playoffs as an even bigger achievement than 1000 even though i do wish some players could just play one more season and get that cool milestone too

Leafs didn't offer him a contract, obviously. So he retired. As a Leaf fan I have to wonder how many high-level management jobs do the Leafs need? 6-8 seems right but I count a minimum of 12 who fill high-level management roles with Toronto, and I"m being generous. Can you run a team by committee?

I think the 19 looks good in the rafters but with batherson's name on it

I don’t see Ottawa retiring his number while working for the Leafs

I think a good comparison is Mike Gartner…..both guys won’t blow the doors off on any given night….but they are always out there, just beyond sight of the beach, hunting…

I am sure you never meant to but how many games did Jason Spezza play as Captain. That must be a statistic worth throwing into NHL career figures.
