- With three lawn renovations going at the same time, it's been a little crazy but I finally have updates for you!
After an overseed, the neighbor's project lawn is filling in great and we even got to lay down the first stripes on it recently with the lawn stryper. After a week of rain, the two acre project surprised me and we're off to a great start there as well. Finally, after sand leveling and overseeding my front yard yard, and starting a full renovation of tall fescue in the backyard, I see a light at the end of the tunnel.

Great point on holding off on the edging. I do the same to let it fill in any gaps along the edge, when I'm seeding.
Great updates! Can you briefly elaborate on your neighbor's watering schedule? After the grass germinated, when did he change to deep and infrequent? Now, does he water every other day or three times a week, 1/2 inch each day? Thank you Ryan!

I know earth worms are good for turf, but I have a bentgrass putting green in my backyard and they truly make me go crazy. In the spring I have to blow the castings every morning before I mow and then roll. It's cut at .150" so anything on the surface is very noticeable and very annoying.

Next spring your neighbors yard will look even nicer as the kbg matures and spreads. Seeing that 2 acre project eventually grow in thick would really be a sight to behold. It's getting there and hopefully the weather cooperates.

Great updates. Looking good! I am in process of my renovation and I must have your luck. I did topsoil level with 15 tons of dirt. In first 36 hours after seeding my lawn we got 4” of rain and washed most out. I used straw but it was full of seeds and so I started growing a hayfield. I sprayed glyphosate to start over but of course rain came in out of nowhere and washed that away. Up against the clock I decided to get a slice seeder and reseed again. The machine from Home Depot had blades worn down to the nub. I reversed them but flooded the cylinder with oil so had to drain the oil and do an oil change. The overseeder was not self propelled and just too much effort for some of my slopes. After this reseeding effort have not had a drop of rain since (11 days so far). I am watering like crazy to keep up with the dry weather (8k SF with only 2 hoses). My wife wants to kill me because we have 4 young kids and I’m either working or watering! So yeah, it’s been fun! Oh and I’m doing KBG so it’s taking forever!
I too put down SS5000 on 9/3, and it is painfully slow coming in. I live in York, ME and we had nights in the high 30’s in the last week which did not help. Warmer now thankfully. I hit it again with some nice soil mixed with more seed and starter fertilizer in the thin spots. I need to mow soon as the good grass is getting quite long. Hoping to do a first mow this weekend. You're killing it! I can hardly keep up with 1 project lawn and here you are doing 3. Did a compost level/top dress prior to seeding and overseeded on Sept. 6th with KBG and PRG. Did a top dress of peat moss and an app of Tenacity at the time of seeding and starter fert 4 days after. Been watering 2x/day for 15mins (10:30am and 3pm depending on weather). Did an app of Milo and Soil Hume about 2 weeks after seeding. Seeing awesome growth from both (more so the sissy ryegrass that just hit the 5-6 inch mark today). KBG is sprouting and pouting (only at 2 1/2''). Just had my 1st mow today to hopefully open up the canopy so the KBG can get some sun and stop whining. I expect another dose of fert (16-4-8) and Tenacity on week 4. Couldn't have done it without your videos/guide to cool season lawns. Thanks Ryan!

All three renos look great. Neighbors lawn looks really good. Your front is always stellar. Your back is coming along. My reno had the perfect storm. Perfect weather for a KBG lawn. Responded well and will be mowing after 2 weeks .

100% accurate on the bluegrass renovation, it takes almost a full year to see a deep lush full potential KBG lawn after a renovation.
You spread the grass seed back on Sept. 5 and two weeks later you have good results from grass growth. My question is the spoil spreader roller you used to evenly spread pete moss over the grass seeds. Did that have an influence on the success of your seeds growing so fast? I want to get me one of those soil spreaders to spread soil or pete moss rather than shoveling it and using a rake to spread it which would save labor and time.
Your renos are looking really good! My PRG and KBG have stalled. I expected this from KBG, but PRG. I used SS5000 and applied their 19-26-6 starter fertilizer. First seed application was done on 9/7. I'm getting concerned that I won't have much of a lawn before our regular frosts start coming.
Learning a lot from these videos. Did a thatch before an over seed. Figured out 12 days after my over seed I have a bent grass in the existing lawn. Now I need to figure out if i use Tenacity now or wait until spring. Also would love to know why in many in your videos you bag clippings. Always thought is was better to mulch instead of bag.

Watching these videos makes me want to have a nice lawn. I need a serious lawn renovation but don't have the money for materials at this time.
For fertilizer buy Milorganite. It is organic and far better for your lawn, and it is really cheap. For weeds just get some weed b gon for lawns. Both of these did really good on my yard this past summer, and it wasn't real expensive.
@@karens1795 I was looking at some Milorganite at Ace today. I need to get more grass seed mainly, there isn't much quality grass on the lawn and needs some thickening... too many bare spots.
@@ScottKelley The Milorganite will help thicken your lawn. I used it and it definitely worked. You can put down on the entire lawn, but rake those bare spots to loosen the soil and put a combo of Scotts 'Classic' grass seed and milorganite with it and put either some peat moss on top of it or straw to help it maintain the moisture and keep it from washing away.

Which way to you prefer to spray those liquid products? I’ve noticed you have mostly sprayed with a back pack sprayer but at times you are using the ready to spray bottles. I feel the back pack seems to get a more even coverage and you can zero in on your product amounts a little better. It would be nice to hear your thoughts. Thanks for the inspiration to keep my lawn looking fresh!
I believe I have learned a good bit from watching your videos this year and have decided to take on our 30,000 sq foot front lawn this fall. Hope I was paying attention.
Try tea seed oil for the worms casts works a treat.
Use Penn mulch(seedaid) instead of straw. It holds moisture and breaks down unlike straw.
Depends what is free and this case, straw.
I live in Iowa. I has tall fescue sod that is very bumpy when mowing. I want to do some lawn leveling. Do you recommend sand to level or top soil ?

Loving the rye grass look. Is Kansas to close to the transitional zone for the turf?
For Rye grass? It's perfect for Rye or any other cool season turf.
Kansas would be in the transition zone. It could go either way on cool vs warm but fescue would be the most tolerant of the heat for a cool season grass
You mentioned dormant seeding, could you talk more about that?
Not surprised with your results. Question for you Ryan. I did my seeding first week of September and the grass is coming in nicely. I have a lawn tractor for mowing but have not not used it yet on all the new grass coming in. Push mowed so far. When would you recommend that I can mow with the tractor? Thanks in advance. Big fan from Canada Lol!
Probably at least a few mows in with the push mower. You'll have to just see how soft the ground is and let it dry out a little

Watched many of your videos and only just realised I wasn’t subscribed, I am now! I live in Bournemouth, UK. And currently the days are around 15 Celsius and 9 Celsius at night. I seeded the lawn early summer and it’s looking strong and great now, wondering if there is any feed that would help boost root growth before the real cold weather kicks in?

I did a full renovation on our backyard two weeks ago with bluegrass, rye and fescue. I used straw to keep things in place. Ryan, how long do I keep the straw on? Fescue is at 6" and the bluegrass is at about 2". I can't wait to reel mow it!!
Projects are looking good Ryan! I planted some seed super store elite bluegrass blend on August 17th, I added another small round of fertilizer probably 3 weeks ago, but I haven't cut it yet. Its probably 2 inches high at this point, but I think I overdid it with the topsoil and I'm not sure how I can mow it without really smashing the soil and grass down (I don't have a reel mower)? Also, how much should I be watering it now, I've been doing 2 times a day for 20 minutes each time, I'm in twin cities area of MN? Lastly, how long does grass have to mature before it come back strong after winter, I'd imagine that first frost isn't far off.
How quick do you mow the existing grass after you over seed? Should I wait a week or so before mowing so I don’t disturb the seeds? Or keep mowing every 3 days so the grass doesn’t get to tall? I live in Oklahoma and dealing with Bermuda and over seeded Rye today.

The fescue seed that accidenrtally ended up in back, would that work in Southern California with a partial shade/other more sun area yard?
Yes a lot of people in CA use fescue because it is much more drought tolerant

Completely off topic but I just have a question I haven’t been able to find the answer to anywhere. I live in Alberta Canada and my lawn along with everyone else’s goes totally brown and dormant in the winter. My question is, in the spring do those brown blades of grass begin to turn green again, or does the grass grow new blades? It seems like the answer is new blades, because every spring I have a lot of dead material that doesn’t go away. I’m asking because I’m already looking forward to next spring because my grass is already going dormant, lol, and I’m just wondering if in the spring if I should just scalp all of the dead stuff off so I don’t get matting and don’t have so much dead material in the lawn. Does applying iron provide any benefits to new grass other than color? How soon after could you apply something like microgreene 0-0-2 or Sunniland minors blend along with regular feeding program

Sorry if I missed it in any of your lawn renovations, but how much grass killer per 1k sq ft of lawn do you need? I use Spectracide concentrate in an gal+ hand sprayer at just over the recommended at 3oz per gallon that I use for weeds in flower beds, sidewalk and driveway cracks, etc. How much grass will that cover? I want to nuke my backyard because it needs leveling, water can sit for days, and it killed my TTTF over the last couple seasons and creeping bent grass took over. Looks terrible. Doing it next fall. 32oz bottle says 3k. How accurate is that? Thanks.
Hey, just found your channel. I am trying to over seed my lawn and, with a lot of trees which I love, I have a lot of bare spots and thin areas. It's a good sized yard and I am not energetic enough to do it by hand so do you know of a good scratch type rake that I can drag behind the mower? The one's I have found have the bigger/wide tines and I would like something with tines about the size of a steel garden rake to just scratch up the top 1/2 inch or so. Thanks.

Hi Ryan. Thanks for the Updates. I see that the Soil Humic link you posted doesn't have the sprayer. Can I just use a sprayer nozzle and use it in that bottle straight up?
Ryan. I've got over 2 acres and want to darken it up. Been using Milorganite but still want that darker green. Don't want to go broke and burn through 10 cases of the stuff you use since it's a large area. Any advice on which liquid iron concentrate to buy? I'll use it with my 30 gal pull behind sprayer.
Your 1/2 inch lawn is crazy thick - is there such a thing as seeding / overseeding beyond the lawn's capacity to grow?
I just switched today from sod-quality kentucky bluegrass(Midnight II and Emblem) to sod-quality tttf(Amity, 4th Millennium, Raptor III and Avenger II). It was my fault that my kbg died this year. Maybe my watering wasn't enough to keep the lawn alive. We had an extended drought. I'm tired seeing my lawn get stressed from mid July to September, every year. Here is my kentucky bluegrass lawn taken few days ago - imgur.com/a/KhKLYdP Make sure you water a lot. That's what I think was the problem that I didn't water enough. I was told that KBG needs tons of water.
What precautions do you take to keep from staining your concrete when applying iron? I had a bad experience with granular iron sulfate.
