Welcome to Episode one of Patch from Scratch featuring the Moog Subharmonicon and Moog Mother 32! In this video I create an ambient patch (who would have thought?) with helpful on-screen text along the way. In the future I may explore live narration. We'll see.
Anyway I hope you find this little patching tutorial helpful, even though it's more of a "I'm not an expert but here's how I patch my synths and make ambient music" sort of thing, but it just doesn't have the same ring to it.
Let me know if you want to see more tutorial videos like this!

Yes please! That was really informative and helpful, as I'm just starting my M-32/SubH journey.
@@janeandrew2636 thanks! Stay tuned for the next one!

“Let’s get started”
**hits play, already sounds better than anything I’ve ever made**
Ha! So tru!
haha
Pure beauty… from the sounds to watching you make it all happen in real-time…
Thanks for the kind words!
Amazing, thanks so much all the best from Amsterdam!
I hear why people love moogs, they have a pretty significant own character and this is a pretty nice one
Thanks David!
You make it look effortlessly easy - true skill
I would love to see more tutorials since you are the whole reason I now own a Studio 3.
heavenly. thank *YOU*
Keep on riding through sunny days & electronic nights
Thank you! I shall!
My I ask you regurding your workflow? Which pedal and connection are you using? I’m purchaing the Moog Sound Studio 3 in 2-3 weeks and thinking to get the MPC Live 2 as the main controll center + using it’s reverb capabilities. Later then Hologram Microcosm and Eventide Space or Strymon NightSky. What would you suggest? I’m already using several midi interfaces and Apollo audio interface. I would be lovely to hear your opinion. Since I basically need to create similar sound like you but with more drums and melodic house approach. Fantastic, how you decribe every step you do on your Moogs! Looking forward to hear more from you. Best from Berlin ✌
Great patch! Very inspirational! Subbed.
Synths and plants. YES!
I honestly needed that. Thanks
Alllll righty then.. .let’s keep this up ... Mother 32 and the Werkstatt on the deck... now I for sure need the Sub.
Love it! Moog should hire you! Thanks! Look forward to more!
That would be amazing! Haha, thanks!
Great idea doing the sound demo, with subtitles. So many reviewers are mostly bla bla bla and you barely get an idea what a synth can actually do. You nailed it..
Hey, Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed this one and found it helpful :)
Oh I say, that's very nice indeed :)
This is so beautiful i could cry
This comment is equally as beautiful 🥺
Nice jam. I hope I can produce something similar one day
I looove this. Thanks man. Thinking about getting a couple (3?!) of these moogs. Was leaning towards a 32 and dfam but not sure now. This looks like a good start potentially.
Lovely reverb.
This is literally great!!!!!!!!!!!! I love the way you're basically starting from scratch and including all the building of the sequences, changing the wrong notes, showing it actually being synced... Far better than most videos where everything has been pretty much set-up beforehand!! I've subscribed and hope to see more of this sort of thing!!! I need a Subharmonicon now!!
Thank you so much for your kind words! It definitely let's me know I'm heading in the right direction. I was worried something like this might be too boring. I'm really happy you enjoyed this and there'll definitely be more coming in the future.
@@SyllixMusic No worries... One question though... Sounds like a reverb is connected, but I can't see anything leaving the patchbay... Is it from the Subharmonicon audio out on the back, straight into the reverb pedal?
@@richardjames111 Valhalla Shimmer reverb on a send bus in Logic Pro X
Love my Subharmonicon! Now I’m thinking I need to get the Mother 32, as well. Which inevitably will lead to a DFAM....
Nice work!
Thank you! It's a slippery slope (not a bad thing). First was the M32 for me, then the SubH and now I'm looking to go fully modular!
@@SyllixMusic and @heartajack Indeed, slippery slope. I am really enjoying slowly building a system and learning as I go. FUN!
@@SyllixMusic noitced you got into eurorack while keeping them. Hows that working for you, do you use it seperately or do you patch them together with the eurorack often?
Thinking about buying mother32 + subh and the possbility to extend them in the future impacts the purchase a tiny bit.
or is there any single function you really like that you get from a module that couldnt be done with the patching from only the mothers
@@producer1762 I most often use them with the eurorack now, I almost never use them separately. It's so cool being able to sync everything in time and run the Moogs through the other effects, not to mention the many patching possibilities.
very good work
Lovely, so nice to see someone using this stuff with mind to music in mind xxx
Really enjoyed this, having someone go step by step, well done, great video
Thank you so much for your video. It made me understand the products more. Cheers👍👍
Thank you. I'm glad I could help!
Absolutely beautiful
Great video! Very nice to see your process in real time. I have a different setup, but still gives me some ideas for combining different voices and sequences.
Cheers! Glad you enjoyed it!
A lovely piece of music and very informative. Just joined the Moog journey myself so yes please, more of the same☺️
What a wonderful journey it will be :)
Lovely patch
I'm interested in more tutorials. They are awesome... Great Job.. Nice ambient sounds!!!
I'm hoping moog will release Something new in this format...then I can buy the 4u rack and have mother34, dfam, subharmonicum and the 4th unit all stacked on top of eachother......and JUST noodle all my troubles away...love THIS😍🙏👍
Thats what I do...Noodle my worries away...LOL.
What about the Moog mavis? It sounds great with the dfam
Google the godfather
Beautiful!
This was fascinating to watch. Thank you!
I had a Subharmonicon a while back (and this video was one of the reasons I got it actually) but after buying bigger synths I sadly got rid of it as I wasnt using it that much anymore. Now that I have gotten into modular I REALLY regret ever selling that thing. Such a fantastic combo with the Mother-32 aswell!
Congratulations for this awsome melody and sound creation as well as good pseudo tutorial. Thanks a lot. Sébastien (France)
Thank you for the kind words!
Very lovely! Posted on facebook group Modular Soundscapes.
Thanks Kozmic, I appreciate it!
Amazing song. I have these + DFAM coming my way and videos like this just justify why I bought them.
Thank you! I think you're going to enjoy the holy trinity. Glad you've enjoyed the videos :)
Nice reverb
very useful thank you!
Yes! I'd love to see more of the tutorial style videos! I love this stuff! You make amazing music! I even enjoy the mistakes and the corrections.
I appreciate it Jeremy! Thanks, and there'll be more for sure.
please do more of these... i will watch all of them
I will certainly be making more :)
Enjoyed that SyllixMusic look forward to more.
Thanks! There will certainly be more in the future :)
Love this so much...more more please!
Thank you! I just released #3 today!
Great video! Would love to follow this series. Saving up for a Subharmonicon to complete the trifecta, you're videos are very inspiring and only want me to get it more! Keep it up!
Thanks so much! The trifecta would be awesome!
Very inspiring, having my subh coming in a few days. Great mate 😎
thanks! you're gonna love it!
This was fantastic, really insightful, thanks!
Thanks Mike!
Fantastic idea, love the tutorial!

Lovin' this vid and the guide, thanks!
Sweet mang! Really dig this!
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
Awesome. Also at many places this kinda sounded like the opening to Yoshi's Island
Really nice work, almost convinced me to buy the duo. Need to work on my musical ability first though :)
Sensacional
Really nice mate
Absolutely wonderful! I am also interested in pairing these two machines. I love your music and would be interested in learning more from you.
Wonderful
Cheers!
Yes, yes!
Love it!!!
Cheers!
About to pull the trigger on the SH (just sold some other gear) and hoping that the Behringer Crave will stand in for the M32. It’s supposed to be a decent alternative, it’s got all the patch points- and it is of course a lot cheaper... Got an iPad full of reverbs so I should be ok! And yes- until I get this good more tutorials would be very welcome...
Bravissimo👍👍👍👍👍👍
I'd say the plant knows best about why the hairy arms are in the way of good sound and not just a close relative.
:(
🙏🙏🙏
The COOLEST man! Thx! Just getting into desk top synths and am thinking of going Moog, now I know I’m going Moog. Question, the Mother 32 has a keyboard,. How are you generating tones on the SubH?
Thanks! Both synths have built in sequencers. The mother 32 has a 32-step sequencer and the SubH has two 4-step sequencers. Each step can determine the pitch, as well as it's 6 oscillators.
A Westmeath performance
Sounds nice. Are you using an Eventide Space or Valhalla Shimmer or is that Reverb part of the subharmonics?
Thank you. The reverb is Valhalla Shimmer :)
Was wondering too but that Valhalla is everywhere here on youtube ;-)
@@vr4ever645 I have the Korg Minilogue XD ... Don't need Valhalla anymore, as you can Code your own FX or get them from the web. But the Moog Sound ist simply stellar even without FX.
@@StarshipCaptainNemo awesome! I too have the minilogue XD and even ordered the nts-1 as an effect machine (should arrive tomorrow), since I love the effects of the minilogue xd and wanted to bring them to my moogs.... 👍😊
I see some commenting on acquiring the "trifecta" of M32+DFAM+Subharmonicon. I intended to buy the M32+DFAM Studio set but then Moog announced the Trio with the SubH. Will I be missing out if I save the $700 and go for the Duo or will I thank myself later for going for the $2K "3" Studio? What will I miss out on if I don't get the SubH? Thanks...I am a definite newbie but enjoying my journey (presently have the Werkstatt-01 w/CV Expander and Arturia Keystep). Thanks!
I don't own a DFAM, so I can't comment on the trio, but from my experience I don't think you will be missing out on anything if you don't end up getting the SubH. I would think about more of what you would like to be able to do with a small synth setup. The mother 32 is very versatile and sounds amazing and has a sequencer. Paired with the DFAM you'd have a nice little setup with the ability to create percussion sounds. I started with a mother 32 and then a SubH more because I make ambient music and the SubH seemed like the right choice for me. I would start small and get to know that system, then you'll start thinking about what you could do if you had this synth, or that pedal or that effect, and then that's how I would expand from there. No need to rush and spend all your money. That's my opinion. Good luck!
It would be great if these things were made for normal size hands... they seem like toys, but such is Eurorack.
The first time I saw a modular rack demo in a music store, I was surprised how small the modules were! Personally I feel the Moog semi-modular series are just right.
Great video! How do you tune the SubH and the mother 32?l Just by ear? What the initial tuning of the subharmonicon oscillators?
Thanks! The Subharmonicon has 4 tuning options to choose from. You don't really need to do much to get them both in tune. As long as the Mother 32's tuning is dead center they'll be in tune together!
Does anyone ever set the assign out to anything else?
Enjoyed that a lot. Thanks for putting it up.
I'm glad you enjoyed it! I've only used the assign out for random and clock. But now I just clock out of the SubH. I know there's much more you can do with the assign out, I just haven't explored that far yet.
Sounds Great. What Kind of reverb did you use?
@@rolfgockmann6872 Thanks, I'm using Valhalla Shimmer
@@SyllixMusic Have had my M32 for a couple of years, lots to learn, Got into eurorack as well and am constantly thinking about what I can do with it all. Even if I don't always get to power it up.
Also saw on your about info we are on the same rock. Small world.
Hey man - thanks for an amazing and instructive video. Was wondering - how do you mix the audio coming out of the m32 and subH?
Hey, Thanks! Each output goes into one of the inputs on my audio interface and then I record separate tracks in Logic Pro.
minun Musiikkia Löytyy Facebookista.
Is that the internal reverb or something digital? It sounds digital.
Valhalla Shimmer, digital reverb.
@要在ㄨㄩˇㄘˇㄩㄨㄤㄨㄤㄕㄒˋㄈㄨㄨㄖㄣㄕˋㄕㄩㄥ
This is fantastic! How do you get those plucky sounds to ring out so long on the m32? It sounds like the decay on the filter is very quick but the notes last until the next.
Thank you! The decay of the notes is turned up, and the reverb also adds to the tail of each note. Because of the random voltage being sent from the assign output of the mother 32 into the cutoff filter, it has the effect of sounding much shorter than it actually is because the filter's value changes so rapidly. These dramatic changes are synced to the tempo so I believe this also adds to the effect.
@@SyllixMusic Yeah for sure, I meant before you patched the random voltage to the filter it sounded pretty plucky. Did you have the VCF mod turned up at all then?
@@BeniRoseMusic the decay is turned up and the reverb accentuates the tail, I think that's all there is to it!
im curious, do these each have their own individual outputs going into your audio interface or are they connected in some way?
That's correct - they are going into separate inputs and recorded to separate tracks in Logic Pro.
Nice! Can subharmonicon do ratcheting like m32?
Thank you! I don't know if the SubH can do ratcheting, I still have a lot to learn about it!
No it can't. It has 2 super simple 4 step sequencers that can run on the clock, or a division. No multiplication here.
However, you can use the external trigger input, so you could borrow the mother32's gate output for ratcheting. (I use the tiptop circadian rhythms zoomed view and an or gate for this - which works nicely)
Is there any effect plugged to the moog? a reverb o something like that?
Yup, I'm using Valhalla Shimmer reverb.
@@SyllixMusic Is there a posibility to have a a photo of the moogs pannels to "copy " the set up ? would be awesome to understand some stuff of the set up
@@user-cf3um7qp9n the patch notes are on the screen. Fast forward and you'll see I explain each patch point one by one. Good luck!
How did you get the Subharmonicon in tune with the mother?
Hi Greg, I tune the Subharmonicon first and then move on to the mother 32. I'm preparing to make a more in depth video about how I work with the Subharmonicon.
@@SyllixMusic say you wanted to write a song in the key of C, would you first make sure that the Subharmonico’s oscillator is in C?
@@gregburnell8454 I only have a basic understanding of music theory, and I don't create music with any key in mind. I just use my ears and go with what sounds good. The only thing I can say is that I try to keep each oscillator tuned to a 3rd,4th,or 5th from each other.
Lovely video! What reverb is it?
Valhalla Shimmer
@@SyllixMusic Sounds super!
Do you use a reverb?
Yeah, Valhalla Shimmer
