- Roy Harper Song
When the day is done and the ball
Has spun in the umpires pocket away
And all remains in the groundsman's pains for
The rest of time and a day
There'll be one mad dog and his master
Pushing for four with the spin
On a dusty pitch with two pounds six
Of willow wood in the sun
When an old cricketer leaves the crease
You never know whether he's gone
If sometimes you're catching a
Fleeting glimpse of
A twelfth man at silly Mid-on
And it could be Geoff and it could be John
With a new ball sting in his tail
And it could be me and it could be thee
And it could be the sting in the ale
Sting in the ale
When an old cricketer leaves the crease
Well you never know whether he's gone
If sometimes you're catching a
Fleeting glimpse of
A twelfth man at silly Mid-on
And it could be Geoff and it could be John
With a new ball sting in his tail
And it could be me and it could be thee
And it could be the sting in the ale
Sting in the ale when the moment comes and
The gathering stands
And the clock turns back to reflect
On the years of grace
As those footsteps trace
For the last time out of the act
Well this way of life's recollection
The hallowed strip in the haze
The fabled men and the noonday sun are much
More than just yarns of their days
When an old cricketer leaves the crease
Well you never know whether he's gone
If sometimes you're catching a
Fleeting glimpse of
A twelfth man at silly Mid-on
And it could be Geoff and it could be John
With a new ball sting in his tail
And it could be me and it could be thee
And it could be the sting in the ale
The sting in the ale
Wonderful performance of this poignant ballad! Thanks for sharing this song about athletes getting older. Beautiful! 🌞
Mighty fine performance John.
As a Yank, I don't have much exposure to cricket. But we got to visit Australia and NZ 18 years ago during a tri-country tournament, and we got caught up in the excitement over the course of several weeks. The English won and it was super exciting. All this is to say that I had to watch your video once I saw the title. It was great! Uke before wicket and all that...
ha good story! yea those tri country tournaments still happen. It's the broadcasters' worst nightmare if Australia is not in the final two play offs...happens occasionally. Uke before wicket,😊..nicely done!!
Ooh, I love this, John... SO evocative!
Cheers Val. The original is even more so as it also features the Grimethorp Colliery Band as well as Roy on guitar.
Great song! One does not need to know cricket to appreciate this.
@@kolibriuker1297 thanks Ylle. I agree!
This is such a heartfelt song about sport I'm not very familiar with. Beautifully performed!
@@MelTheUker thanks Mel. Just throw in a few references to home runs and bottoms of the ninth and it will all make sense:)
Sadly I have never been to see a test match, even though we lived within a bus ride to Edgbaston, let alone a county game but we grew up watching both on the tellybox in those days when you’d regularly see Jeff Thompson trying to take some poor unfortunate batsman’s head off 😂. The Ashes was a regular feature and you’d see the Windies and the great teams from Pakistan and India. There was something genteel and unhurried about a 5 day test match. Never much cared for Boycott, still don’t, like watching paint dry, but the likes of Clive Lloyd, Ian Botham, Thommo and Dennis Lillee of course. Ah, those long hot summers 😊. Lovely evocative song JITS
Cheers John. I’ve only been to 2 different days of a test match at the SCG. Both were against the Windes. The first when I was about 8 and the Windes had fast bowlers Wes Hall and Charlie Griffiths..and maybe Gary Sobers was still playing.
The second was in the Clive Lloyd era with Lillee and Thompson in full throttle.
Test Cricket has always been a great summer staple on the radio here. Go to the beach..go for a drive…have the Cricket on. Even if it’s just benign ambient sound in the background at times.
I know zero about cricket, but I feel the tension in your delivery. Very well played, John
@@Renaissance-Man-Ukulele Cheers mate. Yea the song has enough dynamics even if the subject is obscure.
Beautiful song! I have no idea what the heck is happening, but I appreciate the vocabulary lesson, your emotive singing, and the sweet wistful playing.
Thanks Marin. Clever theme!
Ah, I love a cricket song, almost as much as I love cricket. I haven't heard this one for ages. Nicely done! I nearly went to watch the local Big Match last Friday, Scotland v Namibia, which was on just up the road in Dundee, but sadly I got caught up in other stuff.
Cheers mate. I can’t remember for sure but I think Namibia are one of those minnows that jag a win against more favoured teams occasionally.
This was an education! I need to learn more about the game.
@@AndrewMorsePDX Andrew I expect you will be joining your local First Eleven any time soon. I see you as a wily spin bowler!
