Nice to see you back on the screen more regularly Joe! Good content as usual & great idea about the giveaway at the end of the series. I remember dragoncarp - think they were the sports direct of fishing - RRP £199.99 but our price is £29.99 lol. My fist course rod was a 3 piece rod, a kingfisher brand from Argos & caught many a fish @ £14.99. Think 'we' all over complicate fishing but it's definitely good to have different price points to cater to the whole spectrum of anglers. Something simple like free lining with bread will always catch a fish or two no matter the gear used above the water's surface 🎣
@@nuffinbutfishing Also, congratulations on the marriage, getting your house & the impending new arrival. Certainly grown up from the initial Joe in the vids lol. Are any of the old crew still fishing?
Close…Knew Roger pretty well hailing from mining country up in a Nottingham. He sold his business to Sports Direct who eventually sold off his superstores. So sad, great starter prices and a lot was much better quality than you think. The retail price on many items typically £99 but tag price £29.99, the higher price was a fair reflection of what a normal retailer would ask for the same quality with their mark up. It was no con, just bulk buying direct from the factory with no middle man mark up. His margins were low but his sales volumes massive and he did angling a great service by making it accessible to the kids too. I still use 2 lovely 2 3/4 carp rods. Super slim, the eyes carbon whipped, top end looks and performance but I think they were around the £50 mark. A simple label went on instead..” Purist Carp”. My last fish on one of them was a scraper 40lb common caught hook and hold style, float fishing the snaggy margins of a lake in France. Perfect for that and floater fishing to this day. I have more expensive kit but I love those rods. Clearly with high spec features the story goes they were a production run for one of the big tackle companies in the U.K., but the deal fell through leaving them as surplus stock. As Roger was a regular reliable customer they were offered instead to him at a stupid price which clearly he accepted. I suspect had that big name company taken them on they would have been sold at around the £150 mark. We lucky folk in Notts got first dibs in his local Hucknall store and enjoyed some incredible bargains for sure.
Good old Roger Surgay, who started Dragon Carp, among other brands. Used to do tackle shows around the country, "the man on the mic" and his motto was "pile them high and sell them cheap". Also had a couple of shops in the Hucknall area and a warehouse I believe in Chesterfield. The major brands did not like what he was doing to their industry but it worked. I still have a pair of Avanti twin top Barbel Rods I got from the Kettering show about 15 or more years ago.
I still have brilliant 8 section “travel X” 12’ carbon match rods. Pack away to nothing for the boot of a car or fishing off a motorbike. Yes bound to be a bit heavier than a 2 piece but honestly the action is lovely and you cannot tell once it is up. In fact I landed a 16lb carp on said float rod crucian fishing a couple of weeks back. Great fun, has no great resale value for tackle thieves, it takes some abuse, and like of lot of his factory direct stuff has been the most amazing value. He knew he was pretty much hated by the other retailers around him on the big shows, but he kind of thrived off that. And who’s stall was always the busiest? No prizes for guessing.
Absolutely love these types of videos. As anglers we've become obsessed with having all the latest gear...well i know i have and spent a fortune doing so. We forget that we all started somewhere, with cheap tackle and caught loads of fish. Newcomers to the sport must look at prices of tackle and be put off. Great advice looking at the second hand markets
I think Dragon Carp got swallowed by the Sports Direct group, Avanti was their sub brand. Lineaffe were another sub brand for one of the big online tackle retailers, Total fishing or something like that?
