That burned-out building was C' Italian restaurant. They moved to Clark after the fire.

There used to be a bamboo furniture factory in that area around the old building.

Garfield Bar was there before 1988. The fence line across the street was the 'side' fence, not the back fence. It was for the Clark View and Friendship gates.

Here is what I remember about Fields avenue from my time (Feb 1989- Oct 1991). Just outside what was then Friendship gate, there was a bar called the "Hot Club" where we went on Tuesday nights to watch reruns of Monday night football. There was a great place to eat called the Chili Pot just across the street. I don't remember all of the bars on Fields avenue but as you headed towards the main gate on Fields, there was a little county bar called the Wagon Wheel that had a live band on the weekend. I was never a fan of the loud crowded bars where GI's acted like assess so I hung out in the smaller places. I also frequented Garfields. A the time is was a small place with a small bar, juke box, and about three pool tables. There was also a bar called "Buster Hymen". Also, just outside the main gate on Fields, there was a huge bar called "Maverick City". This was a popular starting point on Friday's for the ville run. Beer was 25 pesos for happy hour. I remember the bar you were asking about but can't remember the name. I believe you walked through the arches and down a sidewalk lined with monkey's in cages and then back to the bar area. There was also a large bar on Fields where at the "brothers" hung out but I can't remember the name. The one time I went in, they were playing Ice Ice bay. I didn't stay long. I really miss the way it was, It has so much personality. Now it is Vegas in the PI.

The building you were asking about that looks like an old castle with a “C” on the ground in the entrance use to be an Italian restaurant owned and run by a guy named Chef Chris, who since is deceased. He opened a restaurant in the Royce Hotel called Amare, which his wife runs now.

Started staying right there (when Orchid was booked) at the (old) Phoenix Hotel. Hung around Perimeter, for a change.. Last time there (Phil) 2011, night before I arrived (checked in) an Old British guy staying at the Phoenix, walking with a girl @ 2 or 3am; guy jumped off a Motorbike, robbed him (Wallet & Phone) and shot him in the head / Dead, right in front of Garfield's .. Yes, I was very Creeped out & watched my back, bigtime ..

I wish my attempt to move there back in 2022 went better. Every person I met it seemed was trying to scam me somehow. Took about six weeks before I was on a plane back to the states. The rental scam that resulted in the police evicting me from a condo that I signed a lease with the owner’s cousin who apparently had no permission to do so was the last straw.

Here is a real story: went to a resort and rented moto bike from a shop by the port. Left my drivers license as a deposit. They wanted passport by I said no as we need it for the hotel. When I came back to return the motorbike - guess what....the girl at the shop told me this is not their motorbike and they don't have my DL 😮😮😮. Apparently the shop is operated by multiple people and bikes are owned by different people too. Sat there while they were calling to find out who has my DL. Appeared the moto bike owner who took my license is now working on a ship somewhere but his uncle would come soon and bring my DL back. And yes later that day his uncle brought my DL to the hotel.
Good thing I was not leaving that same day and could stay and wait.
But never never again I would leave anything.

I rented a bike there in Angeles once. However, they asked me to leave my passport. I felt very uncomfortable about it, so I never rented a bike after that. I agree with you that you shouldn't be leaving your passport with these guys. The other thing is I think you have 30 days to operate a motorized vehicle in the Philippines after arrival. How will you prove this without your passport if you get pulled over?

Prime Real Estate used to be 3 or 4 low-end bars across the street from Garfield's. After that, the long building were concession stalls for furniture, art gallery, cloths, leather accessories, fruit and vegetable shops before they too were converted into bars after 1990.

Right before you get to that CNBC Bar, there is door. As weird as it may seem, there is an expat that lives in there. It looks like it is a old boarded up bar, but he has it all fixed up inside it just looks all beat up from the outside. I have seen him walk in there several times and I finally asked him if that was his place or not....he said it was....who knew!

No actually they were open and operating 2010 the property across from Garfield's also called on fire the wiring and some of those places were crazily bad with each new owner they would just run new wiring and not fix the old stuff hence why a lot of them burnt down over the years, the next grouping of stalls we're originally just retail stalls when the base was still there then after the base left and the eruption of the volcano they started putting the little bars in the stalls. But perimeter Road back during the military days and up until around 2010 was a lot of action there was another grouping of bars next to Clarkton Hotel one of them was called Lost in Asia I loved going there back in the day.

Hi it's the same. all over the world bars did a roaring trade pre covid and it hasn't come back people learnt to drink at friends places or take uŕ own drinks to a spot you enjoy now you see coffie shops everywhere but with Inflation everything we buy is costing more so we all spend less so these businesses take a big hit it's a question of cutting down urr personal spending and drink at a bar or a coffie shop is easy to go without
We all have a jar off coffie at home and a beer I n the fridge
I take a travel mug I can take out in my car and my scooter has a bracket for it as well and can take a beer or spirit out

They probably want a lot of money for those lots, Brian, in what looks like a pretty dead area. I lived a few blocks away from Termini Brothers Italian Bakery growing up in South Philly. Had relatives that worked there and Isgro’s Italian Bakery, both are well known for their cannoli. Haven’t had any for awhile even though I’m in the area quite often because my son lives nearby.

@geary5445 just carry a copy of the passport stamp page. If they want to see the real passport they can come to hotel room or wherever. Never been asked for passport in 12 trips.

3:35 Garfield's was opened in the late 80's by the late (highly decorated special forces Vietnam vet) John Hollis, it changed hands backward & forward several times until he sadly passed and changed hands a couple of times after. 4:43 was Matrix Brawn Bar, the owner Gen now has the Grey Fox bar. 11:40 used to be "C" Italian Restaurant, until it burned down in the early 00's it was re-opened on base but closed during lockdown.
