I've seen Lester Piggott stating that Nijinsky's St Leger win was hard fought and he wasn't the same horse he'd ridden in the summer of 1970. Well ... looking at this closely, Piggott hardly had to ride at all. It seemed pretty effortless to me.
Yes the greatest horse i have ever seen triple crown winner and should have won the Ark, i have just been told that he had ring worm when racing the St Ledger and the Ark, O'Brien wanted to pull him out of the Ark. Arkle over the sticks by a mile, Nijinsky on the flat.
Nijinsky is one of the best of all time, how many horses have one the Triple Crown in England? A hell of a lot fewer than have one the Triple Crown in America. It is truly a more grueling test of versatility in a horse than the American Triple Crown series, although it is more spaced out.
Yes without a doubt the English Triple Crown is a much stiffer task than the American equivalent. Nijinsky was just a superb racehorse, one if the very best I've seen in over 50 years of watching horse racing.
Forget the Arc and the Champion stakes defeats when well over the top (still ran a great race in the Arc) this horse took them apart in 69/70 without ever looking in trouble... do I really need to list the races he won?
Nijinsky and mill reef are about equal. Mill reef only losing out to the best miler ever in brigadier Gerard and beaten once in a 2 y old race in France. Sea the stars reminds me of Nijinsky though in his relaxed manner.
The race that cost him the Arc and a top 5 place in the all time greats. Other things didnt help like Piggott too far back to maintain a surge to the line.Nijinskys temprement which was fragile at best. He got the triple crown but connections would have swapped the Leger for the Arc anyday
Dancing Brave does not have the Derby on his CV. Without that race, no horse can be really great? They can produce great performances but to be overall one of the finest , the Derby must figure.
The best horse and jockey I have had the pleasure to see

A great and confident ride by Lester.....

I love the breeding of this line. My gelding is Nikinsky's grandson. He just looks super and has a wonderful temperament.

@jmdm1957 Rubbish. Nijinsky the greatest racehorse in the past 40 years, Yes even above Dancing Brave and Sea The Stars. End of story...
