My mum n dad took me this year n he put me up on the bandstands platform in the Lonsdale stand , what a year ,what a horse I was 12 years old then, miss you both so much mum n dad xx 😂
You forgot Johnny Brabston, who used to look after him and rode him at Home. Johnny and Vincent O‘Brien turned him from a Rogue into the Racehorse he was.
In my opinion the Greatest of them all Triple Crown winner Guineas Derby and St Leger and would have won the Arc if Lester had not dropped him out last of the field he came from last in the space of half a furlong to just get beat by a nose, he did the exact same thing the following year or the great Filly Park Top who won the 1 Thousand Guineas and the Oaks went for the Arc and Piggot did the same drop her out last with a furlong to go I have never seen a horse finish the way she did to be pipped but a nose on the line 2 Arcs that Lester Piggot should have won and ruined two great horses unbeaten winning records .
Why was he run in france,in the Prix De L'arc De Triomphe, when he had just come out of a virus. What a shame to descry his record like that. Was it the owners decision?
George, was only 8 years old at the time but I knew from the reaction of my Dad that we witnessing something utterly exceptional. He maintained throughout his life something mirroring your view that we’d never see another as good. The maestro combination of Piggott/O’Brien only made it more special.
Nijinsky Was The Greatest Winner of the derby .there will Never Be As good a horse as Nijinsky ever again .That derby was run in record time since Mahmoud in 1938 Hand Clock Time.Since then workforce has broke the course record. Nijinsky is the only colt to win 4 classic no other colt has ever done before and won't ever again . The 4 Classics Nijinsky won Was 1 2.000 Guineas 2.Epsom Derby 3. Irish Derby .4 Doncaster St Ledger ..As For Other Epsom Derby winner SeaTheStars i Rate second Best .3 Sir Ivor Was A Brilliant Derby Winner 1968 , i could go on But i won't for now
fox Dancing brave was never as good as nijinsky. Nijinsky should have been unbeaten only for losing 3 lengths when he veered off line near finished he would have won the arc And would not have run in the champion stakes. He was past his best then . That was one big mistake the great Vincent o Brien made
@@jim2473 The Brave was given the highesj rating in history at the end of 86...he would of had too much finishing kick even for the great Nijinsky i fear.
@@jasonfox4857 no way would dancing brave have beaten nijinsky. Seen nijinsky was the fastest winner since Mahmoud 1936 .workforce holds the course record now .Dancing brave won only one classic nijinsky won four classics
@@1964karlos Quite agree with you sir, this particular year was Momentous but for me Sir Ivor was the Star and Roberto must be considered as he beat a high class field. I rate 1981 as a bad Derby because the opposition was sub standard. Kind regards Glynn n greetings from Stourbridge West Midlands UK 🤝
@@glynnevans1851 It is an interesting debate and one that will never be resolved! What I would say, even disagreeing with the maestro himself, was that Sir Ivor had too many defeats on his record. What an era it was though and how privileged we were to see such magnificent thoroughbreds in action.
@@ianzanshin5044 Hi Ian, cheers for your reply. Lester himself said Sir Ivor was his best Derby ride but the win on Roberto was Remarkable n how he got Roberto up to pip Rheingold was Momentous. Without doubt one of the greatest jockeys to have ever graced a racecourse, R.I.P The Long Fellow.
R.I.P. to the greatest ever jockey...God bless Lester, thanks for the memories..

Never tire of watching nijinsky 😊
Charles Engelhard, Vincent O Brien, Lester Pigott and Nijinsky.. .
.what a Team

What a fantastic horse he was nijinsky, I also loved Gyr and Mon plaisir as well !
Anything 2000m or further, Nijinksy would have picked Frankel up and carried him.
I agree.
Absolutely agree Sir, well said👏🏼
Couldn’t have put it better, excellently put.
This was the Game Changer for me. Watching this & was hooked! Poetry in motion!
I was 13 years old and this horse kindled my love of horse racing. A brilliant horse and a brilliant jockey.
@@keithf_ Couldn't agree more Keith, i was only 10 and did it for me! Blew away the opposition with his acceleration!
Nijinsky. Everything one could want in a horse.

Difficult to criticize the greatest jockey of our time, maybe of all time, but no-one can get everything right every time
Lester was 2nd in the "Arc" three years on the bounce: in 1968 on Sir Ivor, 1969 on Park Top, and in 1970 on Nijinsky (with Park Top in 3rd).
The Epsom Derby, one of the world's sporting spectacles and the ultimate test of stamina over a mile and a half.
The greatest horse ever

@@shaunbeer4686 absolutely right. What a perfect combination . Lesters style bought the best from the horse
my namesake King of epsom best jockey ever
what surpirises me is the quality of the video, secrtariat in 1973 had bad quality for his race but here, three years before him and its very good.
One reason is this is a PAL video of 625 lines versus the US NTSC system they often had picture issues and just 525 lines of definition
Made that look so easy.
Would love to see Nijinsky and Kelso
Great Derby videos thank you for uploading them :-)
Thanks For Thee Memories 💯This Be When This One Got Hooked🪄🍀🪄

Seems odd to hear Sir Peter call a Derby, It was always an ITV/Channel 4 deal.
Ben back in those days both BBC and ITV showed the Derby it was deemed that important
Yes as a class 1 listed event

It's silly to compare horses
