Nijinsky was not only a brilliant racehorse but also brilliantly named. Sired by Northern Dancer and named after the famous ballet dancer, Vaslav Nijinsky, who said on his death bed that he would return one day as a racehorse.

With every passing year his legend grows. I'm 66 now and watched all his triple crown races when I was 16. Still get chills.

Second place, Champagne Charlie, was a really fast horse. He gave Secretariat a pretty good run there in the stretch. This was early 1973. They’re both still babies figuring out how to fight.

Torsion is my fave. He would have won the race if he had been much faster and if he did not get tired out so fast. Torsion is the best ever!

I never get tired of watching the greatest horse ever watch his races . What a great magnificent horse and their will never be another in my lifetime .

Sure, this looks impressive at first-glance, but consider the circumstances: This was Secretariat's very first career turf race. His very FIRST! It was filled with great older horses who had won hundreds of other races. In fact, Tentam was the world record-holder for a mile-and-1/8, matching the same time that Secretariat ran the Belmont on dirt (still the all-time record). In short, Tentam was one of the best turf horses in history, and Secretariat beat him handily in his first ever race on turf. Secretariat was otherworldly.

Most horses that break out that fast end up toast by about mid point in the race and lose badly. I wonder what point in the race the other jockey’s realized that Secretariat didn’t go out too fast, that he wasn’t going to break down and that they didn’t have a prayer of catching him.

He seemed to almost toy with a great turf horse, Tentam. Such a great memory, of living during his racing days. Even seeing his final race, in person. Secretariat, simply the greatest, ever!

There was many horses before Secretariat that were good but since him none can compare . Sure he lost a few races and still he must have had Pegasus in his blood line .

Big Red had an extra gear. I've been watching old film of his races on UA-cam, and time and again it's the same thing: he shifts into it rounding the clubhouse turn or on the home stretch and wins going away.

I'll always love Secretariat like crazy, but greater still was Seattle Slew.

I don't know a dam thing about horses or horse racing but I believe Secratariat was a true world class athlete and I can't stop watching horse racing now.

Dr. Fager, the world record holder for a mile, also ran in this race in his 3 year old year. Secretariat beat his time by a full 2 seconds. Secretariat only ran 2 mile races in his career, this race and the Champagne as a 2 year old. If he had have raced as a 4 year old and ran a few mile races, he no doubt would still hold the world record for a mile.

The second-place horse at the Gotham Stakes race has some fight in itself it gave Secretariat a very good run

Amazed to read the immortal Secretariat is the only horse in history to win the Gotham and then win the Derby. Just another statistic from the greatest ever. It does make you think the winner of tomorrow’s race is likely a toss for the Derby.

I've seen Lester Piggott stating that Nijinsky's St Leger win was hard fought and he wasn't the same horse he'd ridden in the summer of 1970. Well ... looking at this closely, Piggott hardly had to ride at all. It seemed pretty effortless to me.

Lester though Nijinsky was done by the time of the Arc. O'Brien agreed after the Champion Stakes. He'd had ringworm over the summer. The King George at the end of July was the last time we saw the real Nijinsky.
