    I actually like Martin. He’s casual, honest, maybe an unintentional smugness but that’s more our predisposition to side with Michael (and the racial biases of some viewers) than any intention on his part. I think if he’d stuck around longer he could’ve connected fairly well with the likes of Daryl and Jim, but maybe the writers thought another “normal” guy wouldn’t fit well.

    7:19 Ryan being impressed by the Harvard MBA's in white collar prison. Seems to be some foreshadowing for Ryan's fate a year later.

    I don't think Martin is baiting Michael. I think in some respects he is an outlier in the context that he is reserved and "normal" compared to the zany characters (even within the branch he came from). In a situation where you are "new" it can be so hard to know what to say, so you fall back on things that are factually true (his comments on the tv in the break room for example). He doesn't know Michael Scott to the level that the audience does, so to him he is just being honest, where as we know Michael is going to feel jealous and small.
    I could be wrong. Also Prison Mike is great because they never brought it back to diminishing returns.

    Finally something we agreed on. Never really understood prison mike. I watched the show like 5 times before I discovered that prison mike was such a big thing. I do love the bit with Ryan as the belle of the ball :))) and the Jim and Pam stuff, obviously. :D

    Response to jim's weird little interaction with Karen:
    Like you mentioned yeah I do think Jim doesn't want any bad blood between pam & karen however, more so I think he's being preventive about his love for pam.
    You see, Jim still loves pam during this season and him pranking her will definitely set off some boundaries you don't want your girlfriend to know about. I'd do the same in this position, albeit I might have broken up with Karen earlier than Jim did.

    • @lacklusterkidd
      @lacklusterkidd 3 роки тому +6

      yeah if he had told karen everything pam hated, karen would’ve picked up on the fact he was still in love with pam. i think jim tried to save karen from finding out she’s a rebound.

      @LacklusterKid a security deposit more than a rebound. Jim didn't want to go back to Scranton all alone with his rejections in tow and had Karen as a crutch to lean on but Pam ended up way more responsive and open to a relationship than Jim thought she would..

    This is the most memorable episode for me. Prison Mike is excellent. Mulverine's critique misses the key theme of the hypocrisy and awkwardness toward ingrained prejudices, the walking on eggshells, the fears and insecurity surrounding poltical correctness that often REALLY does occur in offices. Mike's inability to control his insecurity about his own prejudices, his staff loyalty and the resentment he feels toward a confident Black ex-con, causes him to act out and contort himself absurdly. He ends up projecting what he wants to suppress. That makes this VERY VERY FUNNY, and very relatable. Reminds me of John Cleese as Basil Fawlty in the classic "Germans" episode of Fawlty Towers.

    • @Mulverine

    I'll tell you exactly what Jim's reaction (6:11) was about (and yeah, it has Jim coming off as just a bit scummy).... On some level, this game he was playing (with Andy) on Pam was really a sort of flirtation (I don't even think HE realized it in the moment) but as soon as Karen tried involving herself, it more or less forced Jim to realize exactly what he was doing... and then KEPT doing it without Karen 😬 (tisk-tisk)
    ...just watch it again and REALLY watch Jim's face and entire demeanor change when it all clicks.
    Did you ever flirt with someone in your youth by drawing them one of those negative space pictures (where you're really drawing AROUND what you're trying to draw)... SAME exact type of thing here.

    • @rossomac21
      @rossomac21 3 роки тому +5

    I always read Jim’s reaction as him being scared of Karen seeing how much he knows about her, the prank he plays is based off of his immense knowledge of the things she enjoys and doesn’t enjoy, and the small ways they interact during the prank have that same flirty flavor a lot of their pre season 4 interactions have. Things Jim knows Karen would have a problem with

    • @D_McGeezacks

      I always thought it was just Jim not wanting to team up with his *current gf* against the girl he really loves. Like if Jim pranked Pam on his own that's one thing, but he didn't want Karen to be in on it. And deep down he low key just wanted to interact with Pam.

    I think the Jim and Pam scenes are so important as show they are far from over and the final frame as you mentiond is brilliant. I love when Pam realizes that Jim is pulling a prank on her as has that same look at end of season three. When Jim shows her he cares she just beams. I love Jenna's acting so much and this was a pivotal episode for them

    Jim didn't want to prank Pam with Karen for 2 reasons IMO: 1)because he likely didn't want her to feel like they were "ganging up" on her and more importantly, 2) Pranking people was Jim & Pam's thing. To her it could look like not only has he "moved on", but he "replaced her" in what was a favorite pastime of theirs. Jim is with Karen more to save face and deep down doesn't want Pam to feel like he's completely moved on.

    A counselor once said to me that you don’t know who a person is just by hearing what their dreams and goals are & all that good stuff... you truly get to know a person when you hear what’s not so easy: what are the the things in their life that threaten to get in the way of that.
    With that ethos established, I say I wholeheartedly agree it is deeply satisfying to triumph over the obstacles between us & what we want in life. You said words so close to what that counselor said that I don’t take that as a coincidence. It’s truth I need to hear.
    So, very insightful commentary. Thanks Chris 🤜🏻

    I distinctly remember a lot of episodes of season 3 being mediocre and feeling like filler when I watched 3 or 4 years ago. Like I was supposed to enjoy it more than I did, but it was The Office. I’m not too critical a viewer but I kind of remember - since I didn’t catch that one amazing pan from Andy & Pam to Jim during Rainbow Connection - but I remembering thinking “the only thing I liked about that episode was Prison Mike”. There are elements that should be good like the building love triangle but the episode suffered from irredeemable boringness.
